  • We all have that one comfort food that we can't resist. But while most of us might reach for a bar of chocolate or a glass of wine after a tough day - our next guest prefers the taste of BRICKS. Patrice Benjamin-Ramgoolam can eat around 6 TABLESPOONS of brick a day, after getting hooked on the 'chalky' taste when she was a teenager. A decade since she was last on the show, she’s joining us alongside expert Dr Elizabeth Shea to unpack the unusual addiction.

I had the same thing, but I was diagnosed with severe anemia and iron deficiency and after taking iron tablets my craving for eating rocks went away.

I’m surprised her doctor hasn’t done this. To me it seems clear that craving for earth etc needs to be checked for iron deficiency first

These types of unusual cravings…. Stem from severe nutritional deficiencies…… her body is screaming for minerals…..& it manifests in wanting to eat strange things like this.

I had pica as well. My thing was pumice stones and I went to therapy and found out I was doing it because I used to watch my mum do her feet with them in the bath and it was a comfort thing because I’m not close with her anymore (family troubles) and I want to be. It was a substitution for love from her.
Eating bricks from her family members homes could be the same thing, wanted them to be a part of her life or more than they already are.

I was addicted to eating tissue so badly and had pica because of the texture of it. One day I decided that I didn't want to so I stopped but I still have cravings for it.

My youngest daughter used to chew on the edge of our living room walls when she was teething - we used to pick her up and move her away. She didn't do it after her teeth grew in thankfully.
