  • NASCAR broadcasting has been under some scrutiny for the past few years and for good reason. Yet with all that has been said about this important aspect there has been little to no overall advancement. Why is this? Today I want to look at the larger, underlying issue with NASCAR broadcasting. The unfortunate truth about NASCAR broadcasts.

Poach F1 producers and let them produce a great motorsport package and broadcast. Make it fun the coverage with seriousness and better-quality production with more cameras. Think outside of the box when it comes to ads and the flow of broadcasts. If not Prime/Turner then NASCAR for its global feed to make the investment, they got the compound in Concord, USE IT!!!! Oh 2:15 I use Nermal Sports Channel 2 too and even sometimes they hit and miss on camera, as for the coverage of no play by play just use MRN/PRN while on commercials with the raw feed it works :). (if you get the reference to a one grey cute cat character in the newspaper comics being sent by a fat orange cat to a country hosting the final race of F1 if ya know ya know)

Nah, NBC has worse camera angles and a campy presentation style. Don't praise them for making it look like a sport when they put 10% of the money and effort into it as they would any other sport. They min max it more than fox does. The also run more commercials but they aren't as annoying as the twinks from Wendy's and curved penis pill ads every other time. Also Rick Allen is an insufferable blowhard. He sounds like a human trombone that just makes slightly flat sounds. He pronounces "Green Flag" as "Grurrn Flargh" and is more focused on the sing songy needle bouncing goofy cadence and tonality that's coming out of his mouth more than the actual words he's saying or what's actually happening on the track. That broadcasting hangover from 1930 where you had to do clown voice effects with your voice to make yourself stand out because the recording and playback technology was analog garbage and everyone would sound the same without it. But high fidelity has been a thing for 40 years now. I literally mute NBC broadcasts and listen to the MRN feed over the video. He single handedly makes the product unwatchable. Same thing for the baseball teams. Every single booth is the same formula: Washed up former player who's slightly relevant + Some douche bag with a strong diaphragm who studied bizarre ways to speak at broadcasting school for 6 years and $200,000 in tuition. And the NFL commentators are the worst. Al Michaels sounds like an air compressor with a leaking hose and all the woman sideline reporters try to do their best michael clark duncan impressions to sound like they "fit in" down on the "manly sidelines" with a deep and guteral baratone. Disgusting.

As a Brit who watches the Saudi stream and watches other American motorsports and sports in general, the biggest difference between how sports are covered in the UK vs America is commercials are not taken during the races, the only except is on Eurosport (but if you pay for premium and watch online you can get ad free).
The only times adverts are shown during motorsports is before or after the race, during a break in action if the programme is showing a full day of motorsports so when there are breaks between races, or during highlights of races where you dont miss the action.
For me I dont get why at Talladega for example, they just missed the end of stage 2 by being on an advert break. Nascar has stage breaks built into the races, why not use those for adverts instead of mid way through the races missing the action. I see too often that Nascar, IndyCar and IMSA fans complain about missing action because they are on an advert. And if there is going to be adverts during the races, why not make them split screen so people watching can still see what is happening during the race.

The worst thing to have ever happened to Fox was the success of the iRacing Pro Invitational Series during Covid. Every problem with Fox's broadcasts started there. They saw that as being their new model for briadcasting going forward, but it hasn't translated at all to real life race broadcasts. Also, because of their rampant budget cuts, the whole experience feels incredibly impersonal. The old Hollywood Hotel and Speed Stage made the experience feel alive. The sterile environment it is now is just sad. There's nothing human to latch onto. It's not dystopian, but it feels like the level or two before that

I genuinely don't see how Nascar can keep fans like this. Viewer's attention spans are getting shorter year by year, yet Nascar's broadcasts are moving in a direction that fails to keep your attention. The only times cars are shown on TV are overshadowed by the other, non-commercial related horrible aspects of their broadcast. I agree with all you say, there are literally more time given to commercials than the racing, hockey, football and basketball solved this problem by having TV time outs, and it's not like NASCAR races don't have at least 10 cautions in almost any race. They could easily extend the cautions they have by a minute or two to allow for more ads while there was no racing. Especially not an issue if they go to overtime. Teams just have to plan to have enough fuel. I also wonder what the Waltrips have on the France's that Michael is still on the air after embrrassing NASCAR by losing title sponsors in Toyota and NAPA due to his getting caught cheating multiple times.. I agree the steady stream of commercials while the race is going on has made their broadcasts unwatchable.

Fox's IMSA coverage was also bad and had similar issues they're experiencing right now with NASCAR. Commercials were the biggest issue and it's one that's continuing with NBC's IMSA coverage as well as constantly changing channels during the Daytona 24, Sebring 12 Hour, and Petit Le Mans. Also, let's not forget that some of the races start on channels not many have access to (Fox: FS2 & Fox Sports Go. NBC: pre 2021 was trackpass while it's been Peacock since 2022). Then there's the races being aired on cable instead of national that also causes the ratings to be low. Additionally, with multiple classes competing at each race, cameras won't catch every incident as well as ignore key moments in the race for each class and it leaves viewers wondering what happened to a specific team that they follow. The problem with NASCAR coverage is NASCAR itself. Back in the day, the races were exciting. Watching Petty and Pearson battle it out was dramatic. Nowadays, it’s 498 miles of boredom interspersed with wrecks and yellow flags, until finally on the second to last lap we get The Big One followed by a one-lap finish. They could just run a 40 lap race and get the same result, without all the yellow flags that make it so boring.

I just started getting back into NASCAR after years and am also getting into F1 for the first time. F1 does such a better job of making each round feel like it’s a major event. NASCAR especially on Fox always feel like it’s appealing to the lowest common denominator. They will have Larry Mac explain “tires are them round things on the bottom” from the cut away car then go to commercial. The racing in both series is somewhat boring right now F1 just does a better job with the packaging around it to make it feel like it’s an elite event. Add to it they have the F1 TV app and I can watch practice, qualifying, racing from one place is just more of an incentive. NASCAR doesn’t need to change though like was pointed out. They are getting paid the only losers are the fans who get to watch live commercials with the occasional race interruption.

But to not have Junior on the broadcasts is beyond asinine. He’s the John Madden of NASCAR. Imagine CBS pulling Madden from the NFL in the 1980s? Junior is both knowledgeable, entertaining and candid. He makes a boring race watchable and a great race a classic. Heck, his debut “slide job!” broadcast is still being talked about. He belongs on a major network and that network should do all the races.

Its not a matter of effort; its a matter of priority or guiding principle. Right now Nascar coverage is guided by a principle of having sponsor-driven broadcasts. Look at the most cited critiques of the broadcasts:
    1. Number of commercials
    2. Ultra zoomed in camera angles -- Sponsor logos need to be prominent
    3. Horrible camera selection -- e.g. the god awful panning onboard camera. Again, its designed to always keep a sponsor logo centered in the screen
    4. The sponsored gimmicks -- I'm sick and tired of being gaslit by Toyota All Out. They say commercial free racing bought to you by Toyota, but its a Toyota commercial
Its like Fox doesn't care about broadcasting a race. What they want to do is get as much TV time for sponsors as possible, even during race action. Zoom out and just show the race? Nonsense, you can't make out car sponsors if we zoom out!

My biggest issue with NASCAR coverage is how confusing it is to follow for the series. You got the series on two separate media coverage. Next year will be worse which is important to bringing in more fans. Very few major sports are taken seriously when you split the coverage. Prime example is 2022 for Supercross/Pro Motocross series you had NBC getting Supercross and 2nd half of the AMA rider calendar going to MAVtv which was an absolutely brilliant season that completely ruined by the coverage that was so bad they had to officially merge the series under Supermotocross to get a new deal.
