- The title says it all- Prius (our garter snake) gave birth to a wonderful clutch of babies, including one with two heads. Unfortunately I don't think the little guy is going to make it, but he's still a fascinating animal nonetheless!

13:01, something important seems to have happened here. The far left and far right pupil contracted at the same time. There didn’t seem to be any outside stimulus, so the brains might be connected.

I'm happy to know there are 2 headed snakes out there. I was 5ish years old living on a dirt road out in the woods of Arkansas. I left my bike at the end of our road and my parents told me I had to retrieve it before dark or I'd be grounded. I waited until the last possible min for whatever reason. As I reached for the handle bars I spotted a skinny two headed snake. I froze in place for serval mins just staring at the horrifying thing . I wasn't afraid of snakes normally. After coming out of my stupor I went running the opposite direction making a big circle back to my house. My parents didn't believe me because I had no fear. Normally I'd throw rocks from a safe distance if I couldn't identify the snake and get on with it. My dad walked me down the road saying show me and of course it was gone. No one believed me to this day.

I didn't know that garter snakes give birth to live young! And the two-headed baby was super interesting. I see in another comment that you did end up culling him, which was for the best. I'm glad he was born in your care and not with someone who would have treated him like a spectacle and maybe prolonged a horrible life for the views.
The nature center at my town has a two headed snake, the x-ray of how the two neck segments connect is fascinating.

So... this year so far they've had a hognose eat some of the babies, another hognose with an entirely infertile clutch, and a two head snake where the split is in a unfortunate spot.

I have a suggestion to save him! im no snake expert, but i have an idea. Since he DOES drink, would there be some way to feed him liquid foods? Or put nutrients into his water?As mentioned in this comments replies, if he learnt the 'taste' was a good thing, he might be encouraged to eat regular foods afterwards! again, im no snake expert. Just putting my idea out there! its far too late to not get attached.
Yes I was suggesting very small pieces of food in case the limit is his spine kink, but they could perhaps try purée of what he'd normally get. purée of raw chicken would go bad quickly so I think they'd have to take his enclosure-partner out for a short time, put in the food, let him try to eat, and then take out any food that's left before it goes bad.
Or (sorry if its gross) pinky guts? Its kinda like goo-ish in texture maybe he could slurp it up?
All great ideas, but then it comes down to asking what sort of quality of life that would be to live off puree.

@@neolithiumproduction For some snakes I think that might be valid but it seems like garters are quite active and enjoy climbing and exploring, so food isn't the only source of pleasure in their lives. I'd be concerned about him only being able to eat in a way that was painful, but I'm not concerned if food is just a bit less enjoyable for him than other snakes as long as he can still move around with intention and isn't in pain.

i love garter snakes, i remember being at my grandparents' house and finding a whole bunch of them huddled in a cinder block for the winter (it was either autumn or spring). they're really cute snakes and iirc they are venomous but don't have enough venom to kill a fly. sad to find out that this little guy (guys?) didn't make it ):

I can't believe it! Two headed baby snake??? I've always wanted to see a two headed baby snake!!! It's so cool it's almost like a hydra but it's missing one head but it's super cool!!! And cool place.
Speaking of garter snakes exploring and climbing, one time there was a garter snake that had climbed all the way up one of the downspouts on our house and the dog was barking at it and going crazy. My mom is terrified of snakes though so as with all the other snakes we've found in our yard they killed it :(

I have a brown snake in my yard that I’ve never seen but every spring we find her babies all over the place. Last year she had a double headed baby. It was heart wrenching. He died pretty quickly after we found him.

I've never heard of a more humane way for somebody to talk about deformities like you guys admitted it was unusual/sorta that it had scientific value, without disrespecting the animal, you knew not to get attached, not to force it to live if it couldn't have a good quality of life, even remembering to take the water out incase they drowned you weren't disgusted or anything and you just wanted to give them a life if you could and thank you!!!!!

He likely died from age rather than his injury because he was wild.
I love garters! They’re more docile. I caught one at home and put it in a Rubbermaid container to take it to school to share with my students. The next morning, he wasn’t in it!

When I was a kid, I was terrified of snakes (probably not helped by the time I sat down on the side of the hill and a garter that I'd sat on slithered away).
So every time my mom encountered a garter or a green snake (both were prolific in our yard at the time), she'd make me come over and watch it while she gushed over how cool it was.
It did work, and now I love seeing a snake (wasn't thrilled at the copperhead on the hiking trail a couple months ago - especially since I didn't see it until I'd passed less than six inches away - but I didn't bother it, and it didn't bother me. I did however, stop hiking without my glasses, because I'd hate to not see it again and step on one). A few weeks ago, I got footage of a gorgeous rat snake returning to the hole in my mom's garden wall.

I've seen it pointed out in the comments that the snake(s?) seem to move at the same time, that is to say- its movements are fluid and together, not jerky like it might be if there were two brains or creatures fighting for control. It's probably a single entity (or enough of a single entity), which is usually the issue for two headed snakes. They fight and if they don't kill the other, they can't work together well enough to get food and hide from predators.
Bottom line- So long as this snake isn't kinked too much to swallow and can eat (with that single lower jaw, Emily will definitely need to help him but still), they have a good chance to make it.
Edit: Also if you look at 13:02 or so, you can see the eyes move at the same time, so the brain(s) are definitely connected.

Same here, the bone structure of animals have always fascinated me so to see such a unique radiograph of this little guy or girl would be awesome
If he doesn't make it and dies naturally, they may even be able to allow for decomposition and keep the bones! Assuming they could stop the body getting carried off bones and all by another animal.
Unfortunately if the snake is suffering they'll probably have to smash the heads - I believe there's a video where they discussed how even if it looks the most brutal, that's the kindest way because it's instant and effective
