What Law School Is Really Like | My Experience At A Top Law School

  • Hope you all enjoyed! In this video I explained what law school is really like. Currently, I am a 1L law student at the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law at Arizona State University. I attend law school at ASU's downtown campus in the heart of downtown Phoenix. I just finished my first semester as a law student and figured now would be a great time to talk about my experience and what law school was really like.
First, there are a lot of misconceptions about law school. These range from the way that law school operates to the type of people that go to law school and become lawyers. A lot of people have this idea that law school is a cutthroat environment full of arrogant snobs and know-it-alls who will stop at nothing to get ahead of the competition and succeed in life. Those people do exist, but they are few and far between and they are the exception, not the rule.
In terms of classes and the way law school classes are taught, a lot of the rumors are true. The Socratic method still reigns supreme at high-ranking and top law schools and it can be extremely intimidating to students who were never exposed to that teaching style. However, it is not truly as bad as people make it out to be. Most professors take it easy on students and several professors rarely cold call their students. There are still some teachers and professors who will lambast students to the point of tears, but that is the exception.
Another common belief about law school is that the workload is super intense and the material is impossible to understand. This couldn't be further from the truth. At law school, you have no actual assignments and all of your exams are open book. That doesn't mean that you don't need to work and study though. There is plenty of reading and prep work to do for all of your law school classes. Particularly during your first year of law school where you take case law heavy courses such as civil procedure (civ pro), torts, and contracts. On top of reading, there is also a ton of work that is not required but is highly encouraged. This includes stuff such as practice exams, outlining, briefing cases, and study groups. You can really bog yourself down and spend the entirety of law school studying if you want to, or you can do almost no work and wing it! The workload is almost completely up to you!
The last thing that I cover in depth is the people. Like I mentioned, there are some stereotypes about the people who choose to go to law school and become lawyers. Most of these range from being overly ambitious to being pampered and spoiled by rich parents. Some rumors are true, but the people at law school are just that, people. Honestly, law school is full of some of the coolest and most down-to-earth people I have ever met. They are intelligent, driven, and not afraid to be themselves. The people I met at law school are some of my favorite people and I only met them a few months ago.
What were your perceptions about law school before this video? Did any of them change? Thanks again for watching, and I will see you next time!

Hey man! Great video! I'm applying to law schools in AZ. How would you say ASU compare to UofA?

Glad you enjoyed it! It depends on what type of law you want to go into but ASU is generally the better school. It is right in downtown Phoenix so it’s right by all of the state government, state judiciary, and the biggest law firms in AZ. UofA still has plenty of opportunities but there are so many more options at ASU. The difference in rankings isn’t massive but there’s a reason why ASU has been the top law school in AZ for so long. Hope you found this helpful! Best of luck on your applications!

Not all exams are open book, some law school professors or law schools give closed book exams.

Thank you for the clarification! A more accurate statement would have been that all of my exams were open book. Sorry for any confusion this causes people.
