It depends on your preference. From Sydney to Penang, the best budget economy flight would be Scoot and they do have 18.9 inch of economy seats compare to AirAsia X's 16 inch only seats. However AirAsia will win in premium cabin amenities cuz they have comfortable premium economy flatbed with free meal.

My wife and I traveled Air Asia X from Sydney to KL return last year and thought it was one of the best flights we have ever had and we travel a lot. It was our first time on Air Asia and like you had reservations. We opted for pre booked seat and food and a 20 Kg baggage allowance. It was a hell of a lot cheaper than Malaysian Air who we had traveled with twice before. The service was great as you pointed out. You missed a treat by not paying the $6 Aus for some of the best in flight economy meals you can have in the sky. Their food is amazing. We enjoyed another 6 flights with Air Asia on that trip and the internal flights are per-functionary but most are very short and very cheap ... one from Langkawi to Penang was something like $30 Aus each .... We have already made reservations again for July this year on Air Asia and , barring a Caronavirus pandemic stopping us flying , are looking forward to enjoying Air Asia again .... If you want to spend the best part of $1000 to get in flight entertainment go for it ...

Sally And Ed Everything inside the US is budget and you will feel like riding a bus in South America with chickens LOL
Southwest actually has been doing it good since its inception and they don’t charge you extra for everything. You can still check inn2 bags at 50 lbs each for free ( that’s per person) and if you decide not to fly, you can use the money as credit for future flights.
It is a no frills flight with no assigned seats and free peanuts and coke.
They rose from obscurity to become the world’s largest budget carrier.

The bag was weigh before check in and my daughter try to explain to the counter attendant they ignored the explanation. Its a scam going on in KLIA 2 on the international departure flights. Be aware of all families with more bags to check in. The case still going on and no explanation till now.

Flew Shanghai-KL earlier this year on AirAsia, and it's less than half the price of any traditional airlines, even including the cost of baggage. Sure there's no food, no entertainment, and the seats are cramped, but when the price difference is good enough to get myself a week of decent meals in KL, I would say it's definitely worth it 😂

I rarely purchase anything when on a plane, choosing instead to take snacks and a meal. However, one airline I had to pay for a bottle of water after running out of my own water - I was coughing & coughing so much I thought I would be ill - the attendants would not even give me hot water. The sad thing is I forget which airline other than it being budget from Bangkok to China. Now I make sure I take a massive self fill bottle with me!

Please, I urge everyone not to fly with this airline when traveling to Bali or anywhere in Asia. Prior to booking, carefully examine their reviews. On 05/09/2024, during my flight, I encountered issues with their agent attempting to charge me $200 for a bag that was 9KG overweight. After requesting to speak with a supervisor, the price suddenly dropped to $80. Upon arriving in Bali, I noticed significant damage to one of my bags, with personal items missing from the only bag secured with a TSA lock. During the inspection, they mishandled my belongings, resulting in a broken African tribal necklace. Despite contacting the airline for assistance, their response, received all the way from Australia, was dismissive, stating that wear and tear costs are not covered, holding me accountable for the damages. This experience has deeply disappointed me as it tainted my first trip to Bali.

Air Asia has horrible reviews, but is a budget airline so you gotta take the good with the bad. Regardless, the general review is only fly with them if you don't mind having your flight delayed, rescheduled, or even cancelled (low chance) which are cons to paying for the cheaper flight. Your flight may leave accordingly, but definitely don't be surprised if it doesn't. Also, there is nobody to talk to in English besides a chatbot on their site and instead of refunds they either want u to change the flight or take airline credit. I think you can only get a refund if u book with expedia and the flight is rescheduled, cancelled or delayed. Kinda sucks they make you pay for checked baggage to and from as well so you might as well pay for a more reliable airliner. All in all, I would only book them for a solo trip somewhere on a non stop. A cheap nonstop roundtrip is a worthy risk and more of a guarantee in my opinion. Meeting friends, have a business flight, or another important engagement that you can't spare too much extra time or days? Don't do it. Pay the extra money with a better rated/non-cheap airliner for peace of mind and more of a guarantee.

I avoid budget airlines in Asia. Most of them are terrible. Air Asia has a long distance subsidiary called Air Asia X which actually has a decent and cheap business class product for flights within Asia and other closely countries. It uses a330-300s.
I’ve used them in India and they are crap.
I’d fork out the extra money and fly Qantss or Singapore Airlines instead of these rinky dink low cost carriers which charge extra for everything.
Ryan Air and EasyJet are pretty bad with some really bad passengers yelling and screaming inside the plane. Customer service is non existent.
I guess it depends on if it’s worth it. Maybe 25 years ago when I was young and in university. Now I don’t want to deal with the hassles of flying low cost airlines.
The ones I like are Southwest Airlines in the US and Air Asia X is ok for business class. IndiGo seems half way decent. Most of them are just hassles.

I think they're budget for a reason. When you know what you're getting yourself in for they can be pretty convenient.

Yeah I guess if you know what you are getting into and want to save some money, they are ok. I’d have done it maybe 20-25 years ago but now, probably not LOL
I was 21 when I flew to the US for grad school and 23 hour flight, I had slightly cheaper fares but decided to fly Singapore Airlines paying slightly more and it was well worth it for the food and service. They are still one of my favorite airlines today and I don’t mind paying a little extra if the experience is better.
