How much water should I fill the container with? Will the root become soggy and rot if the roots are in the water for prolonged period?

Great timing! I just got my first one, and I wanted to grow it emersed.
How did it go?
I just got my first shipment from Dustin aquarium.
I was hoping to grow it immersed in my 55 aquarium I have fish at the bottom and a level where I built a platform with styrofoam for the buce to sit up on so only the roots can be in the water I was hoping you have any kind of information or insight if that would be a good idea

Very interesting and informative. I haven't come across Bucecephalandras in the UK. They are mentioned in the Aquatic magazines though. I like the flowers on yours. Just what I need for my aquaterrium.

Do buce transition much when moving between emmersed to submerged and vice versa? I haven't had too many specimens, but I didn't notice any die-off when then went from emmersed to submerged.
If a Buce has foliage which was grown entirely underwater, usually that foliage dries out and slowly dies over a long period of time while emersed. I haven't transitioned Buce from emersed to submersed, so I can't comment on that. Thank you for your comment
Question: So I have been growing buce emersed for about a month now and I just transported it to another greenhouse with some Amazonia aquasoil I just opened. I lightly mist it but I do not saturate it. my question is, will the leeching of ammonia harm the plant enough to do any real damage before the ammonia burst is complete? TIA.
Hi Alex, I can't answer your question because I have never used Amazonia soil. I use mostly fluval stratum, and am not aware of any Ammonia leaching from it. If it does, it has never caused any problems for me. Amazonia may be different.

Very well made video. I live south in Brazil and I have this kind of environment here in my surroundings. I will try to cultivate some of these near a stream under the tropical forest here. will these beauties stand temperatures as just 10°C?
Thank you. I am not sure what temperatures they can survive down to. I would imagine it depends on the species.
Please do not introduce Bucephalandra to your ecosystem.

Great vid! Glad I learned about these plants. Next time, please list the species in the description or in the vid specifically point out the plant and its name on the screen. Itâs difficult to know exactly which plant youâre talking about since theyâre all in the same bin
Thanks, I will try pointing them out better in the future. Many of the plants I own (especially Buce) are not actually identified, though, so I will only include a name if I know it. Otherwise it will just be "this nice one with rounded leaves and wavy edges" :)
Hi this is a very useful tip....is it necessary to cover the buce plant with the lid though i noticed you have catered for holes on the cover? Thanks
Buce need high humidity so you would definitely want to cover them with a lid. I do have ventilation in varying amount. Containers and ventilation will be gone over in an upcoming video

Hi, I am not sure about a lid vs no lid. I would suggest that you try experimenting and see how the plants react. Maybe start with a lid on and then over a few days or weeks slowly lift the lid up more and more to ventilate.

Hi. From the video, I can see that the water in the container looked waterlogged. Will it cause the roots of bucephalandra to rot or do we need to clear the excess water? When I tried out, I always find the roots very soggy and then melted. Kindly advice. Many thanks
I generally let the water evaporate over time until it's just moist, then I put more water in. Buce do OK as long as they are moist; you don't have to keep it really wet or waterlogged, but I find that they enjoy an occasional flooding. Yes, if the water sits a long time sometimes the roots can rot. In nature the water usually is flowing and oxygenated which would prevent that issue.

I probably won't be doing Buce seeds any time. Not currently an interest of mine and getting Buce seeds is not an easy thing as far as I know.

Hi, I don't have an ID on most of my Buce. I get them from lots of sources - online aquarium shops, friends, collectors, etc. That one you asked about is one of my favorites. Unfortunately I accidentally let the whole bin dry out and I lost everything :(

And another question.why not attach the plants on rocks? U just insert the rhyzome in the substrate?
Because I'm just growing the plants. Attaching to rocks doesn't add any benefit and also makes them attach to it so it would be hard to divide them to use in terrariums without damaging them

Sorry. May I ask? Since in nature, bucephalandra can grow emersed. So why is there a need to cover the container? Can we forgo the cover, just have the plants exposed?
Cover is needed to keep the humidity level up. In areas with high humidity you don't need a cover, but in the average house in USA the air is too dry to not use a lid

None of my Buce are identified so I don't know what it is, sorry. I got it from a friend. Where to buy Buce depends where you live, but you'll probably have to check online shops and maybe some of the Facebook groups that deal with these plants. You can ask around for micro species. BTW also some of my "micro species" have got larger than I thought they would. Probably due to the nutrient content and other conditions.

Hi, sorry to hear about the mold problem. Mold is really difficult to fight in wet and humid Buce bins. If it's really bad and killing the plants, you will need to: Pull the plants out, cut off all rotted leaves and stems, wash the plants thoroughly, dump the substrate out and sterilize the bin, then use new substrate and replant the cleaned plants. I would suggest using crushed lava rock or similar on top of any other substrate and keep the water level below the top lava or other layer, so the surface is not as wet.

I don't track the humidity but it's probably between 70-90% RH
Hello. Can I use ADA aquasoil underneath? Im currently using pure lava sand in my set up but they seems not respond well. Its been a month since I emersed them but small growth appearred.
I've never used that substrate but I think it could work. Buce are slow growing so you will need to be patient; I don't think 1 month is enough time.
Great. Another question, can or have you used peat moss as substrate under the lava sand? đ Im planning to use peat moss instead of aquasoil due to high price of aquasoil here in the Philippines.
I have never tried peat moss. Although you could do an experiment with it, I would not use it for all of your plants. I have a feeling it might not work well because it is acidic and won't be well aerated. Could cause rot and/or plant death due to the acidity. But that's just a guess. I honestly think you could continue to just use lava rock by itself, if you add the correct fertilizer. And then give the plants time (several months at least). See the rest of my Buce series for more info
Thank you for the info. I purchased aquasoil already just to be safe. đ Ill try the method you used. I guess they are transitioning from submerged to emerse that is why they look somewhat dry when I left the vent open for quite sometime.

Sure, just be sure you choose the correct substrate. Crypts are a big group and some need different care than others. I don't grow many Crypts so I can't give specifics.

I don't know. There are many different species of Buce that I have and none of them are identified.
