    Great tutorial! Is it possible to use a water dispersion of ZnO in addition to the oil one to achieve even higher SPF?

    • @theinstituteofpersonalcare6401
      @theinstituteofpersonalcare6401  Před 5 lety +2

      There are a lot of different grades of zinc oxide; in my experience though it will tend to move to the oil phase in an emulsion, so even if you start with it in the water phase, it becomes more of the oil phase over time, and that can lead to destabilising the formula if you were aiming for an o/w emulsion and have a high input of ZnO. The only way to find out for sure is to prepare a sample and conduct stability testing to see if it happens with the specific materials you want to use. Happy formulating!

    • @theinstituteofpersonalcare6401
      @theinstituteofpersonalcare6401  Před 6 lety +1

      Please speak with your nearest Croda rep or see if a local soap supplier can repack for you from their supplier - it really is a fantastic, fail safe material for this type of formulation. Google Croda to find your nearest rep and contact them direct if you can, they are worldwide. Hope this helps, it really is worth sourcing it :)

    • @theinstituteofpersonalcare6401
      @theinstituteofpersonalcare6401  Před 3 lety +1

      They would be very similar, but the actual ratio of each material may differ and a supplier is not likely to give you the exact % make up of their blends. Its worth a try though, as it would be chemically very similar.

    Have you conducted testing on this formula how high the SPF is? Just curious!

    • @theinstituteofpersonalcare6401
      @theinstituteofpersonalcare6401  Před 4 lety +1

      Yes I have - the dispersed form has an SPF of 36. Please note if you want to take this product to market you need to conduct full SPF and stability testing as well as comply with all local regulatory requirements. You can use the formula but brands taking the product to market must take responsibility for ensuring they hold evidence and meet all local regulatory obligations. We can consult on this for you: personalcarescience.com.au/Advice/cosmeticformulation,brandadvice-797/

Please email us: info@personalcarescience.com.au if you would like information on a suitable course to suit this type of product. :)

    What would you consider high shear (rpms)?

    • @theinstituteofpersonalcare6401
      @theinstituteofpersonalcare6401  Před 6 lety +2

      Normally anything above 2000rpms is heading into high shear - but it also depends on the mixing head. For example, an impeller, rotor/stator or homogeniser at 2000rpms would also be considered high shear. It also depends on the batch size! For a propeller blade, up to 2000rpms is not high shear but using an impeller or rotor/stator at 2000rpm would be high shear because of the mixing head. I hope this helps!

    Could you use this cream for a baby balm?

    • @theinstituteofpersonalcare6401
      @theinstituteofpersonalcare6401  Před 4 lety +2

      I wouldn't suggest it - it isn't thick enough. A baby balm would be better formulated using a w/o ointment preparation. The formula in this video is actually very light on the skin, and designed to spread, whereas a baby balm is not designed to be as light or to spread as far. Hope this helps, great idea I may have to bring that one out! Happy formulating!

    Hi Belinda, I do not know if you or sb else mentioned it: do you have the TDS or MSDS of both products? The dispersion of the supplier and the powder? What is about the particle size destribution (PSD)? Maybe there is a sign why the powder is more white....greetings

    • @theinstituteofpersonalcare6401
      @theinstituteofpersonalcare6401  Před 4 lety

      Its the dispersion mixing - it enables extremely small particle size and perfect homogenous distribution which means you aren't relying on the emulsion mixing to form that. The dispersion comes like that to ensure perfect homogenous distribution.
