Climb to the top of Kissavos
The climb to the top of Kissavos, also known as Ossa, is an unforgettable experience for hikers of all levels. The view from above is breathtaking, while the route offers rich natural beauty and historical interest.
Route information:
Start: Kissavo Cave (11 km from Sykourio village)
End: Prophet Elias Peak (1978 meters)
Length: 2800 meters
Marking: Yes, red marks
Water: Not on the route, only at the shelter
Duration: 1 hour and 40 minutes (ascent), 1 hour and 10 minutes (descent)
Route description:
The route to the top starts from the Kissavos refuge, which you can reach by road. From the shelter, follow the signposted trail that climbs south. The beginning of the route is relatively easy, with an uphill path through the forest.
Gradually, the forest thins out and the view becomes more and more impressive. You can see the plain of Thessaly, the Pineios River, Mount Olympus and Pieria.
As you approach the top, the slope of the trail increases. In the last part, the route becomes more mountainous, with stones and rocks.
The top of Kissavos is adorned by the small church of Prophet Ilias and a metal bell tower. From here, the view is panoramic and magnificent. You can see the Thessalian plain, Mount Olympus, Pieria, the Achillean horizon and the Pagasitic gulf.
Tips:
Make sure you have plenty of water and snacks with you.
Be properly dressed for hiking, with waterproof and warm clothes, even in summer.
Start your hike early in the morning to avoid the midday sun.
If you don't feel confident about hiking, you can join an organized guided hike.
Furthermore:
You can combine the hike with a visit to Kissavos Cave, one of the largest caves in Greece.
In the area there are picturesque villages, where you can taste traditional recipes and get to know the hospitable nature of the locals.
