Discipline: Freedom or Unnecessary Restrictions?

  • Many people believe that spiritual liberation means doing whatever one wants in order to be free. However as Dada explains real spiritual freedom comes from overcoming the darkness and limitations within. And for that a regular and detailed set of practices are required. Eventually as we impose upon ourselves the practices that will help to liberate our minds from constant restlessness the external discipline becomes a habit and not as restrictive as we felt before.
While popular media always tries to equate freedom with doing whatever we want, our spiritual elevation is a gradual process which requires a ceaseless effort to transform the negative, the inimical and the bondages that each of us possess in one degree or another.

I'm very discipline to meditate. I practice 1 hour of meditation everyday (vipassana), also I do few breathing exercises and martial arts (Aikido). I cook my own vegetarian food and eat properly. In other hand I smoke weed almost everyday and eat plenty of sugar hahaha. I must put this in a balance. Probably is my escape by living in a big and rush city.
Thank you for your lessons. Namaskar.

I totally agree with discipline in spiritual path. All my life in discipline. But the best time in my life happened when I sacrifice and make restrictions about many things. My spritiual development grow! The gifts are great. But I have experience also that when you make a wrong step the consecuences in this level are inmediatly! so you have to very carefull in the path not to return to old habits!. Like Karma inmediatlly appears!! Namaste

Great Episode. There is definitely the fantasy of living a life free of discipline and rules. But whenever I live in such a way, I feel lost and am unhappy. Discipline always had a negative connotation in my mind, but I am starting to realize that when we have high aspirations, there is no way past discipline.

My experience from discipline is that the effort put in is reflected in all other areas. Mirror polish for a clearer view!

I love discipline. It is hard my mind rebels but it is like you mentioned when we are disciplined we reach to that of stillness. Deep within the silence of the heart. I just came out from a one month long silent retreat. We were following a strict scheduled with meditation, yoga, seva, chanting Divine Names, bhajans. All our needs were covered like food, laundry or if we needed anything to buy from shop. Everything was done for us to remain in the vow of silence and follow the routine. I am nos out sad that it is over. All my worries and responsibilites are back. So now I am trying to do a strict schedule that includes all those extra responsabilities. I want to forget myself and abide in the Self. Focus on that only. Even if I have to give up likes and dislikes. Even if it is painful or uncomfortable. I want to endure along with patience, humility and compassion. To myself and others♥️

As someone who now relies on self-discipline for a working from home job and have found distractions too common or lost of interest in completing the task at hand. I’ve been in search for a guru, its a shot in the dark but I would love to chat with you more dada. I’m a fairly new software engineer working in healthcare and I believe you have knowledge we need to show the world how divine feelings can truly heal better than medicine (at times lol).

Thanks for this knowledge, today I understand the true meaning of discipline. We make some discipline for ourselves and we follow it for sometime and we unfollow it after some time, why it happens, why we can't follow it for forever, pl help us to understand it🙏

Namaskar Im so happy for these videoes. Because of SOME selfdisipline I have often a very good life. Fex. waking up early in the mornings is a MUST for me. Thats the most important thing for me to get good meditations and a good day. Its good to get remindings how a retreat can bring big changes. Lets join the Online-retreat that is starting in 9 days:-)

I was hoping to hear your discourse in English, thank you Dada 🙏 discipline does not come easy to me, I struggle with waking up early since childhood. I wish I too could wake up at 5 and meditate and do yoga before beginning my worldly day. I can do it to serve or please someone else but for myself 2 days max before the sleep takes over

    Thank u for sharing this.
Dada usually I wakeup before 5am and start my day with Panchajanya. I really feel good. But sometimes when I wakeup and do panchajanya and again sleep for 1hour or 2hour then I don't feel good. It's just ruined my day.
So I like this type of discipline which internally makes me peaceful and happier.
It is just one example. But there are so many other things also but if I will write those things here it will be a big essay.😜

self-discipline as one aspect of Tapah is there for one purpose only: through self-discipline (and austerity and intensity), you become a master of your body, your emotions, and your thoughts. Patanjali made it as a step in niyamas, but in fact, it was a ground stone for him whether he took in a disciple or not. because this is what it takes to follow the path of yoga. if you still need to develop your Tapah, well, come back when you think you have it. so even though it appears as a step, for Patanjali, it was the condition. and how is it so important? it is pillar that holds your meditation. the breath is the bridge, concentrations is the train, but it is holding on by the pillars of self-discipline. as with many great and beneficial things, self-discipline can go horribly wrong, if it is taken to the extreme. so be strong, but at the same time listen. especially, if you don't work with the real guru. another danger is this: self-discipline will increase your will power. there are no ands, ifs or buts about it. it just will. and power has a tendency to corrupt. so you need to be careful not to mess up your karma, therefore all Yamas and Niyamas. self-discipline is a great and necessary tool to have, which will cary you far, but not all the way. it will carry you all the way to Dharana and it will support your Dyana, but that's as far as it can go. at the end, you will have to let it go. just like everything else. namaste.

Love from Italy. Dada Discipline is the key yes. But why bindind and restrict the darkness? the dark and light are inside us which have to be balance. It,s a choice. Why not transcending it by getting aware of it,and enbrace it. Namaste.

Dada, i know about the restrictions (Yama, niyamas) which improves our physical, mental and spiritual energies.
But im having difficulties in following them regularly. On one day im extremely devoted to my sadhana, but on other days im too careless and break all the restrictions, i follow proper sadhana 10 % of days, but 90% of time i break all restrictions. i keep on repeating these mistakes, even though im very much aware of the consequences.
What advice would u give me to make sure i practice sadhana regularly
