My mom loves Mike McDonald and his songs with the Doobie Brothers. Great singer/songwriter/pianist.
He got so much soul. And i always thought it was a black lady doing the background vocals on this song but its Michael McDonald’s sister.

Smart hip hop artists know where to go for killer samples. Glad you enjoyed the original. Steely Dan is sampled like crazy and Kate Bush and Joni Mitchell.

Same thing...within 2 seconds you'll recognize the sample. Steely Dan a fav among the Old School hip-hop elite. De La, Tribe, Blackstar, The Roots. In fact there's a vid of Talib Kwali talking about Steely Dan.

Sampling has been a controversy since The Sugar Hill Gang sampled Good Times from Chic to do Rappers Delight sometime in the 70s I think.
