He was the second lead singer of The Doobie Brothers before going solo. He's produced as well as just helped friends like Christopher Cross and Patty LaBelle who he had a hit single with "On My Own"
Michael first came onto my radar screen when he was one of the lead singers of the Doobie Brothers. This track was released in 1982 and the background vocals are performed by his sister.. Maureen McDonald. Back in the 1980s he was everywhere. I believe this is his first solo hit. It got a ton of air time both on the radio and on MTV. He did a lot of background work with Steely Dan as well. He did a couple of duets... most notalbe with Patti LaBelle called "On My Own" which is quite easy on the ears. He did several He did a collaboration with Boz Scaggs and Steely Dan and that group is called "The Dukes of September" which is on CD as well as a DVD. Great stuff. He has 15 Grammy nominations and has won 5 of those. Take care, guys.
No pun intended did folks keep forgettin that McDonald simply lifted parts of the original I keep forgettin Great Artist constant borrow , sample parts sung by chuck Jackson & other relatively unknown talented black soul singers of the 50s & 60s . McDonald voice is soulful & he acknowledges chuck Jackson . What a fool believes is simply McDonald at his best
Michael McDonald is a great rabbit hole to explore. From "Peg" when he was with Steely Dan, to "What a Fool Believes" with Doobie Brothers, "This Is It" (with Kenny Loggins) to "Takin' it to the Streets'. Huge career. 🎹🎶🎵
Ok so i am about a year late. I have seen a number of reactions to this song in the past hour. And that Funk hits EVERYONE the same. When that bass line, guitar, the beat, and rhythm drops.. You can not stop from bobbing your head! Funk is contagious.
1982 "I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)" (also known as "I Keep Forgettin'") is a song released in 1982 by American singer-songwriter Michael McDonald, from his debut album If That's What It Takes.
The Doobie Brothers were a big band in the 70s, but Michael McDonald was not the original singer. BY the early 80s I was living this song with my 2nd wife. Those lyrics were my life.
Sorry guys, but this is definitely NOT DISCO!!! And I mean no disrespect, because I love you guys, but please do not blaspheme this song...This is more R&B, Soul, Funk, Jazz & Pop...(and I only included Pop because it got a lot of radio play time on Pop stations back in the day)...Nevertheless, thanks for this reaction & keep up the good work!!! Fun Fact: Please keep in mind that just because a record with a "dance beat" came out in the 70's or early 80's and was played in the clubs or at parties, that didn't automatically mean it was of the "Disco" genre...Disco was different than this, much different...Peace!!!
You're the first RVC hosts who didn't love this song. And the only two people out of the 2 billion world citizens who have heard this song that didn't sing it's praises. But seriously ... surprised y'all were underwhelmed by I Keep Forgetting. I honestly have not come across anyone ever who only liked this song. It is that well known and admired. But to each two their own. 😂
It's early eighties like right at the end of disco. It's still got such a vibe. And it having a R&B feel to it. It makes sense why Warren G. Would sample it for regulators.
He recorded that song with his sister, Maureen McDonald. I don't know if that's the official video, and I don't know if that's her, but seems like it would be. Nice one. Thanks for a great reaction!
There's nothing synth or programed about the beat. That's Jeff Porcaro The original drummer for TOTO and a legend studio drummer. Maureen McDonald is the female vocalist, Michael's sister. Michael was a sideman and backing vocalist with Steely Dan and joined The Doobie Brothers when Tom Johnston took ill. Michael sang background vocals for some of the top acts in the 80's including Christopher Cross and TOTO. He is currently touring with The Doobie Brothers on the 50th Anniversary Tour..
Hey guys. Michael McDonald is one of the BEST !! You should react to "What a Fool Believes" by the Doobie Brothers (MeDonald was the lead singer for the DB's at the time) Also...you HAVE TO react to "Love will Follow" Kenny Loggins & Shanice (live at the Redwoods !! It's unbelievable !! AAAAAND "Jojo" by Boz Scaggs !!!
Such a classic.. Michael is amazing, this is a fave. He also has a duet with Patti LaBelle called "On My Own". Hearing this tune reminded me of a few with similar vibes -- hope you react soon to "Lowdown" & "JoJo" by Boz Scaggs and also the late Bobby Caldwell's "What You Won't Do For Love".
Incidentally, I found scans of some sheet music for this song, based upon which I can make some further corrections to my own human transcription: Oh, never mind.
I'd love it if you would react to; Jeff Healy "See the light" (night music). Jeff is in my opinion very overlooked when people talk about the greats. Trust me, you'll be very impressed by what you see and hear.
Ya'll have to listen to Lara Fabian's "Adagio" and others from her "From Lara with Love" concert in 2000. One of the best female singers/performers of all time.
It is mostly real instruments. It is an r and b tune. Not really disco. The guitar, drums and bass are real, although there is some synth work in it too. An electric piano is really more like a real instrument. Personnel Michael McDonald - lead vocals, electric piano, synthesizers Steve Lukather - guitar Greg Phillinganes - clavinet Louis Johnson - bass guitar Jeff Porcaro - drums Maureen McDonald - backing vocals
Try not to get too involved in the video. You never mention how sad this song is. He has to keep reminding himself that they’re not inlove anymore, (well she’s not) how she made it so clear. How things will never be the same again. Obviously he’s still in love and is devastated. He’s a great song writer. Wrote many hits for himself and other famous singers. Joined the Doobie Brothers and wrote hits for them as well. I enjoy the show. Keep up the good work!
Are you guys serious about suggesting artists that would be new to you? Eva Cassidy (RIP) "Somewhere Over The Rainbow", "Fields of Gold", "Autumn Leaves".... take your pick. Make sure if you see one of those performed live at Blues Alley, you nab it. She left us way too young.
Glad you're listening to some fine music like this, BUT, you really need to listen to music with a set of earbuds/headphones for each of you. Really, you are missing some music.
DISCO? t's NOT disco. . .It mostly has an R & B mood to it. It's NOTHING like freakin' DISCO. . .Give me a break! By the way, you guys are just like every generation. EVERY generation ridicules the previous ones. BUT this is for sure. . .The kids born the day you recorded this will someday become 20-somethings MAKING FUN OF YOU!!! EVERYTHING you think is hip and cool today will be laughed at by a future generation. GUARANTEED!!!!!!!!! And this was the 80's, so longer hair was in, not the shaved heads and hundreds of tattoos of today. Someday, some kid and his friends will be laughing at "grandma", behind her back, as they look at all of her wrinkled up old tattoos that she got "back in the olden days" of 2024. Wait and see!!!
WOW, not a good reaction at all from you two, seen dozens of reactions to this song and they all appreciated his vocals and music. Sad to see ppl make fun of MM and calling it disco just not sure how you two produced so many odd descriptions of everything you were saying about the song, his voice, and the style of their time.
I think reactions are better without research. Be surprised and do research afterwards. It’s always about samples with younger people 😂. I don’t think I ever heard the word sample in relation to music in the 20th century ever. I guess that makes sense. The 21st century sampling the 20th century.
Hey Guys, Michael McDonald is an absolute legend and also known as the man with the "Golden Voice!!!"
He was the second lead singer of The Doobie Brothers before going solo. He's produced as well as just helped friends like Christopher Cross and Patty LaBelle who he had a hit single with "On My Own"
He sang that song... something about a shoe.
He also performed a beautiful duo with Toni Braxton!!!

Also collaborated with Toto.
Michael was great with the Doobie Brothers and his solo work was great as well!
Michael is a LEGEND
Legendary artist ❤
He was singer songwriter, keyboardist for The Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan.
He is also in a group Doobie Brothers should try What a Fool Believes.
Michael McDonald is a great rabbit hole to explore. From "Peg" when he was with Steely Dan, to "What a Fool Believes" with Doobie Brothers, "This Is It" (with Kenny Loggins) to "Takin' it to the Streets'. Huge career. 🎹🎶🎵
Great reaction! Michael has a great, very distinctive voice. He was a singer in the Doobie Brothers and then went on to a solo career.
You'll hear that voice with The Doobie Brothers. Michael was asked to join them when their lead singer became ill - and the rest is history.
King of blue eyed soul!
He was most recently part of The Dukes of September with Boz Scaggs and Donald Fagan - 2 legendary performers...
I believe this was 1982. Michael McDonald has one of the most recognizable and smoothest voices of all time.
Ok so i am about a year late. I have seen a number of reactions to this song in the past hour. And that Funk hits EVERYONE the same. When that bass line, guitar, the beat, and rhythm drops.. You can not stop from bobbing your head! Funk is contagious.
Just a great song!!😍
This song was cowritten by Kenny Loggins and won a Grammy for song of year I believe
brilliant

His voice is extremely powerful. Check out Patti LaBelles “On my Own.” Featuring Michael McDonald. His voice will give you chills.
Yes check him out in the doobie brothers song titled what a fool believes. And him and Pattie title on my own .
This song's most famous sample is in the 1994 Warren G hip hop song "Regulate" with Nate Dogg aside many other songs that used this.

Excellent advice. Should we give them some disco suggestions to listen to? Anything Donna Summer, for example.

This was part of the "soft rock" movement at the end of the 70s into the 80s trying to cleanse the world of disco.
