Microwave Potato Chips? Gadget vs Recipe!
Vložit
- čas přidán 31. 08. 2020
- Today I'm comparing a gadget that creates potato chips in the microwave vs a recipe found online that doesn't need any special device. The gadget took about 6 minutes total, while the recipe took about 10 minutes (prep and cook time).

My new favorite quote: "I chose this one because it was the only one not to catch fire."
i mean... as criteria goes, i can't argue with it.
Its a solid selling point

I died laughing when I heard him say that
I'm really lazy; going for store bought lol
@A I why the fuck would I eat apples over chips
Chancekell _% get apple chips, best of both worlds lol
@A I or you have chips and just go outside once in a while.
Homemade chips just aint worth it
You're obviously not that lazy if you go to the store.
Perhaps they should market this device as the “weight loss” version. The portions are tiny and you work so hard for them that it’s probably calorie neutral.
And it didnt have any oil like the recipe. Surprised that didnt come up in the taste test.
Yup who knows by making it you might start hating it

I think a standard kitchen mandolin and the recipe sounds like the way to go.
I think even if you use the microwave (I’m not all the way through the video yet), a standard mandolin is the way to go - even a box grater with a slicing side might suffice.
Edit: it would also cut down on the cutting time even though the recipe involved additional steps.
My first thought too. If the main issue with the gatget was the super jank slicer then just use a mandolin.
I mean, the homemade chips would take you up to 15 minutes to play around with before their done. And let's face it, you will only get about 10 slices or so at a time. But if you get a few of the gadgets, you can prob get up to 5-10 times the amount you'd get from the normal way. Really, just use the recipe AND the device. Gives you better chips and cuts the time from 10-15 to 3-5.
Yeah try a mandolin both ways and then see what's better. I think the crappy slicer is why you didn't like the fast version.
Sp3cial1st i agree with this too, except then it becomes a question of if you want to spend - $5? $10? $15 (I missed how much he said it cost) for a handful or two of homemade potato chips. I think for the number of times you’d actually want to put in the effort to make them, a mandolin and a DIY version of the device along with the recipe (which is just rinsing + oil & salt right?) would be best. Maybe take a cheapo plastic storage container for $2 (or whatever else) and cut a bunch of holes in it to allow the airflow to the slices and proceed as per the instructions.
“It’s the only one that did not catch on fire in people’s microwave”
😳
That seems like a minimal requirement, yes.
That escalated quickly, lol!
Trying slicing the potatoes with a mandolin.
I’m thinking the same thing
I really like how this guy conducts himself.
Proud dad, happy kids..
I didn't know you could make chips in your microwave until I watched this video..
Just tried it tonight and it worked but it's so slow. Maybe I just eat too many chips, but this isn't gonna work for me lol
Gadget Addict could make more at once by putting it in the oven
just make more at once, what's stopping you from doing that?
Definitely go over oven baked, make large batches, then while you eat one batch, you bake the next. If you have a cooling rack that is oven safe you can put em on top of that while baking to avoid the need to flip.
Since you've tried this, why not try Jiffy Fries. Haven't seen anyone review it yet. The infomercial seems kinda sketch.
Isn't Jiffy the cornbread? Why am I asking, I cook with Jiffy, lol.
@@BewareTheLilyOfTheValley jiffy is an archaic slang for a "short amount of time"
@@Zadamanim Ah, now the fries make more sense, lol. I of course knew of the slang version ("I'll be back in a jiffy"), but didn't think to link the slang word and not the brand with the fries, lol! Brain not working right today.
@@Zadamanim The word archaic will get you bitch slapped by an older person in a jiffy haha. (I also cook with it and laughed at your true response)
I just watched it and honestly, for that price I'd probably get even if it's just for the cutter.
Love the way you are putting your Bloopers at the end. Pleas, KEEP doing it. Thank you kindly and HUMBLY.
Maybe just cook the recipe in the chip cooker, so you dont have to flip em, and you still get to cut how you like.
That's what I was thinking, throw that slicer p.o.s. out, slice 'em yourself and just use the chip holder to cook
Just use a nice mandoline and the chip cooker, best of both worlds
First time seeing this channel. New subscriber here as I like how smooth, thorough and detailed your review was!
The gadget needs to get an upgraded model, to be able to choose thickness.
Seems like it could be a little sturdier too.
I also thought that an adjustable blade would be useful.
@@improvldy and different blades to make waffle or ruffle style.
Or just slice the potato with a knife. There is a reason why nice mandolins cost a decent amount money for what they are.
@@Freakinreviews Would just a slicer on it's own help with this? Good video
I could’ve drove down to the gas station and come back in the time it took to cut and cook these chips.
I think the main advantage to at least this product and making it at home is for people that might want a healthier chip. I am not in that camp but I can understand it.
That thing looks dangerous with how loose the lid was.
I will also go store bought.
I love the outtakes at the end! Great stuff 😄
I liked the bloopers at the end. Great work!
Totally going to try that recipe for me and mom. Curious how well it'll come out for me, and I do kind of like the thicker style chips. Great review as always!
Hey James first of all my family loves the reviews we always learn something keep it up! I wanted to add something to your recent review that you did on the Joie 44000 Healthy Microwave Potato Chip Maker. The name of it is precisely what I want to highlight which is HEALTHY! We own this and the whole point of it for us, was we could make potato chips without adding any oil to the potato. You did not discuss this on your review your focus was rather on the consistency of the potato slices which granted is not always even. I would not say were lazy for using ours the point was to make potato chips without using any oil/Fat. To make potato chips healthier! Thanks again for your work, just felt like we needed to share.
I'm glad you put a video out today! 😊
Great review thanks! And the relationship you have with your children is awesome 🌟! Thanks James
Its 2:40 am in India!, Love yr reviews! Keep up the good work mate
Nice video! You have teased me into wanting potato chips.
I love all your videos. They remind me of those family shows from the 90s. Its wholesome, funny, entertaining and a blast to watch.
I know ive said this many times before but I love when you and brandon are together makes me feel good to see how you two are together
I don't have a microwave and yet I'm watching this purely because I love this channel and enjoy watching James review just about anything.
Galaxy Wanderer: I have a microwave, but I watch these freakin reviews, even those I’m never ever going to buy, like this one!
Air fryer?.

The moment I heard that first crunch, I knew I needed this gadget in my life.
Edit: Nevermind, I saw the recipe results and that looks better.
Thanks for the review bud!
i came back for the recipe and was not dissapointed, you included it in the description!
What happened to Freakin' Brandon? I enjoyed his food reviews!
Works full time.
I’m getting so much anxiety watching you slice that!
Me too! Lol
Same here, it seems the blade isn't nearly sharp enough and that is why he is having to push so hard to make the slices. I can already see someone cutting themselves with this thing so I will definitely not be purchasing this product.
I turned my phone over just in case. Lol
Knuckle Chips!!!
Makes me cringe. The cheap slicers are the worst. That's one thing I'd pay the difference for.
Never heard of this product. Thank you for sharing it😊
Love you videos definitely helps me through this Quentin
Oh my god finally a new video it felt like forever
I love your videos so much
I really like that it is all in one and comes with the mandoline to slice. I have made them on a regular plate hand cut and they came out good. Havent made em in a while.
I don't know why Brandon trying b first and James laughing about it was so funny to me lol 😂🤣
Really appreciate the usual thorough review comparison and honest I have commentary. Always enjoy the Camino of your "kids" of course !!!😂
Love the outtakes !!!
the only one that didn't catch fire 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 great standard
n great review btw 👍👍👍
Could you do a review of the chirp wheel? My girlfriend bought one and she says it helps with back pain but I refuse to believe anything like that could replace a chiropractor visit.
Seconded. I'm genuinely curious about it, but I just don't know.
Great video but no way would I by this. Not that the chip cooker didn't work but that slicer looked really dangerous. The fact one you have to press so hard and two that the top didn't lock and you had to hold it it's a no go.
@R I I've never seen one shaped like a bowl, making it impossible to hold still.
It's a crap design any way you look at it.
You know ... I have a sack of potatoes, and I'd like a snack. I need to try that recipe.
That's freakin' awesome! I've been making them in my oven and they take forever... I'm going to try your recipe.
i love these videos thank u for your content
that device looks dangerous, I'd be afraid of cutting my fingers
You had me at potato chips. I think home made chips are missing the delicious msg! 😂
Please make more of these
Lmao bloopers are a must from now on!! 😅👌🏽😂😂
I'll have to try this.
Some of these products don't come to the UK.
Be interesting to see the recipe version cooked in the gadget.
I use my NutriSlicer that you reviewed in 2018 to slice my potatoes. I know you had trouble with it staying connected to the counter, but I always wipe it clean and wipe the counter clean before I use it, and I don't have any problem. It slices the potatoes perfectly for chips.
I bought the joie a few years back and used it maybe twice. I burned the chips both times (which is why I haven’t really used it again since), but it seems that’s just the nature of making them in the microwave. I actually prefer thinner chips, so the mandolin cutting them super thinly didn’t bother me.
The worst parts are the safety guard (like you, I found it difficult to hold on to and at one point nearly cut my finger trying to hold on to it), the bowl not having any non-slip grips on the bottom, and the lid not locking on. And, as useless as it was, I misplaced the safety grip because there was no way to attach or store it.
Was wondering how to submit ideas saw an ad for artic air freedom was wanting a freakin review.
...I have no idea why I love your channel so much, but I do. 😂
That's really cool I love chips I need to try this...sharing :)
It's probably what a serving size that's why it's small
James picked "the least bad" ie: the least sucky 😆
I LOVE your reviews. I think that most folks are discounting the HEALTH aspects of home made. You can season them to your tastes and the cost is way less and healthier for you.
Please more reviews on chip makers👌
I used to make these in the 90s with a circle that was 3x bigger than the one you have. I would hand cut them. They reminded me of the dehydrated potato chips you find in boxed scalloped potatoes.
I have this gadget and find it works great for what it is consider ease and time it takes vs other methods
1:33 Anyone else remember the saying "One thick, one thin, and one thumb" from late night infomercials?
That's the cutest little imitation mandolin I've ever seen.
On Twitter, the sill photo, I thought they were sliced dried apples.
7:03 epic dad moment
I have a nice slicer so wouldn't need theirs, and since you made the second batch on paper towels on a plate, I wouldn't need that device at all. I never tried to make home made chips, but now I think I'll try it.
I think the value of this seems to be in the cooking rack.I'd be interested in seeing if I could make a cheap version of that somehow.
Regarding the slicer, they're hard to really get the hang of sometimes, and when they come out as they did for you, it's because you're lifting slightly at the end of your pass. Not by much, but when the slices are that thin, not that much makes the difference!
I wonder if you could combine the two period slice them by hand a little thicker or use a different slicer and then use the little round device to hold them vertically I suspect they might cook better being vertical in that holder
U need to make the initial cut at an angle
It will make the slicing job easy as simple mechanics with the angle slicing will give horizontal and vertical force making it easy
Thank you for your videos.
Loved the review, more car based reviews would be awesome!
I need an air fryer /dehydrator what is your recommendation I saw the Ninja Foodi and the power air fryer (which is Emeril Lagasse uses) video but I'm still not sure??? Help I also was looking at the Breville BOV900BSS Convection and Air Fry Smart Oven? please help
checkout the nuwave oven pro it makes awesome dehydrated food and air fries and roasts and does a ton of other things all really well and its not too expensive
FWIW, gadgets that do more than one thing usually don't do any of the things well. I love my air fryer. It is the basket type. The all-in-one type that look like a toaster oven wouldn't work as well for us as an air fryer because when we are making roasted broccoli, French fries, fried shrimp,...etc. having a basket makes mid cooking tosses a breeze. Slide it out, toss the food around and slide it back in. You can't do that with the toaster oven type of air fryer. Also, cleanup with the basket type is a breeze. I let it cool down then set it in the sink, fill it will soapy water and then rinse it out. I know Instant Pot makes a pretty decent 6qt. air fryer for around $100 that will do everything you want to air fry but probably won't do dehydrating. Good luck! Also, remember not to use non-stick cooking spray in the air fryers. The propellant can cause premature delaminating of the non-stick surface. Buy a pump type sprayer that you can put your oil of choice in to use with your air fried food.
@@xplmr1 Ninja Foodi is the best it does so many things when you learn how to use it, follow The Salted Pepper she shows how to cook items together almost.and some good recipes.
I have a Nuwave and it's amazing!!
I have put many things in it to cook; but chicken, fish, fries, and pizza in it have come out the best! I've had my Nuwave for three years and love it. I need to buy a new one.. I've used it so much the pan has that "oil" stained look.
@@graphicsgod Fries, chips to us brits depend very much on the type of potato I have found in an air fryer and in my time I have had 4 different types, the last one went because I got the Foodi.
A tip for using any mandoline slicer. When they say to cut a flat and attach the guard, you're supposed to attach the guard to the cut end. For some reason, lots of people get that backwards, and thus stop using the guard and cut the tips of their fingers off.
watching and especially listening to a man shove potato chips into his mouth hole and masticate is the best appetite suppressant i've found so far.
Great....another Freakin' Review!!
Do you eat with your eyes closed at the family table or restaurant just so you don't see others eat?
You could technically stand up the chips by folding the paper towels in a way to compress the chips together with some gap in them, when doing the recipe to fit a lot more chips.
Maybe something akin to paper origami (in a FAN shape) can be used to sit the chips on it.
Did anyone else's soul leave their body every time he sliced chips without the guard?? Holy carp.
Brandon is awesome! He should be featured in your videos more often! Great review by the way 👌🏼
Ive got the "gadget" had it for years. I have given the chips a light oil brush. Works for me..
I have made microwave chips many times. I use a mandolin slicer and lay the potatoes out flat on parchment paper. I do not use any oil and it works fine. I have never tried to wash the starch not sure if that helps. Cooking time depends on how much moisture is on the potatoes some are as short as 3 mins others up to about 6. Another video on this I watched said adding the oil increases cook time as well. Season to taste I like a garlic salt and pepper blend myself.
This video inspired me to dig out my microwave bacon maker thingy that I never use. I loaded it with 2 medium sized sliced potatoes. And lo and behold it worked. No salt needed either.
Thanks for this friggin review because it inspired me to try my gadget that I already had. What a money saver too. I mean, 10-20 cents per potato vs $3.99+ for a bag of chips.
BTW my gadget has no name markings except for the following:
Patent #4,933,528
Manufactured under license by Emson
UPDATE: My product is apparently called the Emson Bacon Wave. It actually cooks bacon well too. We just don't eat that much bacon to remember to pull it out and use it.
Seems about par for the course for a Joie product. They're local to the part of Canada where I was born and raised. They make a whole lot of different kitchen gadgets that you can find at Walmart and most grocery stores. Some of them are amazing, and some of them are just okay. You could have an absolute field day testing a _bunch_ of their products if you felt like it. I like their Roundy Egg Ring. It's just a simple silicone ring that helps you make more uniformly shaped fried eggs.
I make chips in my dehydrator, they come out super crispy when sliced on the thinnest mandoline setting.
1:52 If his hand had slipped, he might have lost a finger on that blade. It's nasty.
Use a good, full-sized mandolin slicer with the recipe, then use the gadget to cook them. Best of both worlds.
Great review. I wonder how the recipe potato chips would taste, cooked in the gadget's cooking "rack"?
if it was me i would have deep fryer potato chips
great jobs testing it cant wait to see more
you could use a standard box grater and get thicker chips. that way you can still use the gadget but get thicker chips.
A good review. A real review you can trust
think i would of also like to of seen a combo of both device and recipe. so recipe followed then cooked in the device to see if that made any difference
We make the recipe chips all the time. Love them. If you have a good mandoline it's not too bad.
And use parchment paper instead of paper towels.
I've done this in a superior lazier way . I just used a potato peeler to slice the potatoes, drenched them in oil and microwaved on a ceramic plate. I wonder how it would work with one of those microwave ready baking potatoes or fried up in that red microwave grill plate thing.
I mean they basically gave you a mandolin and a spreader for the chips, and mandolin is used pretty often for home cooks while making these in a micro wave is fine, but if you want to make a large batch it would be hard to do in a microwave.
Freakin Reviews: Lazy people will buy this device and use it over recipe.
Me: You dont know TRUE laziness. I go to store and buy a bag of chips. :P
For a cutter like that i always use a cut proof glove, those guards are always awkward to use.
I’ve microwaved 3 batches of potato chips since watching this! It’s so good!
I love Lay’s thinnest chips, practically melt, yum!
Now I'm wondering if thick potato chips are a regional thing in the southwest. I always took it for granted that thinner was better. Lighter and crispier. I'll have to find and try out some thick chips now!
Totally went and got a bag of chips and am eating them while watching lol
For making chips you need to use low in starch potatos this helps with less browning
I like that double camera bit
A good adjustable mandolin (Food Slicer) and a hot pot of Oil works even better than either the product or the recipe. You can use any good frying oil, and then Slice, soak in Water W/ Lemon Juice, then dry & fry. Season and then eat & Enjoy.
Even use popcorn flavors on then when chips are put in paper bag and turn upside a few times
