- Complete coverage of the Iron Bull Sled Pull, Event 2 from the Strongman competition at the 2023 Rogue Invitational in Round Rock, Texas (Friday, October 27).
While the challenge is a 50-foot sled pull for time, this is clearly no ordinary sled. The harnessed, 1,000 LB "Iron Bull" is another Rogue original, and while the event was moved indoors to poor weather conditions, the undertaking was no made no easier for the competitors.
In the end, Mateusz Kieliszkowski overcame a difficult showing in Event 1 to put himself back into contention. But could anyone else conquer the Iron Bull?

Oh! Silly me 😆
@@thechumpsbeendumped.7797I was wondering as well, lol.
When Mateusz finished his run i was like "this is bad, he tanked deadlift and now this" 😂, and he won the event
With 4 1/2 hour sleep. That man have so much bad luck. I really hope things goes better for him. He needs to win WSM and Arnold.
Unless they remove the deadlift
@@BRUTUSz it's a brutal sport, lifting all thoes heavy objects especially what happened to Trey Mitchell, bad luck
@@magnitorfasson9238 not likely, deadlift is most used event in strongmen competition, i think that he just dont train it enough, or hates to do it😄
@@danijel8890 Deadlifts or stones are the most common. But I don't think Mateusz skips his deadlift training, given how determined he is. It's just that everyone has a relative weakness. Let's keep in mind that being able to pull 400+ kg is still bloody strong!
If it looked that hard for MK then you know nobody else was finishing 😂
If only he could deadlift.
I though the same, if he does that there is no way anyone else finishes it. Poor event though, risking injury
@@bmstylee They need to skip deadlifts for at least one WSM.
This competition didn't used to be this deadlift heavy.
Trey posted on IG that he tore his Achilles tendon in this event. Something happened to the sled with each successive pull and ends up injuring Trey. It will be a year to rehab and then more time to get back to full strength. Heartbreaking for him
That sucks.
Wow. So disappointing.
I don't think the sled physically changed after each athlete so much as the fitter athletes did better, and it was just too heavy, and there was too much friction.
@@josephaugustinerhodenhiser1353I'm not so sure it didn't get progressively harder. The friction coefficients could have changed the more it was pulled.
@@dustinm800 Mateucz is the fitest athlete there, he went first and got first, next is probably Mitch, he went eighth and got second. Meanwhile, Trey and Bobby, joint first in deadlift, came ninth and tenth in this event, and are generally good at strength events and less so fitness.
What a brutal event. It really did look like it was getting progressively harder. Dragging wood on metal was probably a bad idea. Wood can be unpredictable.
100%. I get their thought process - we can make this hard, just due to friction! - but someone really had to think about this for a little bit longer before they implemented it.
There's a reason wood isn't really used like this much.
@@stephennolan219 Thing with wood is that it probably got smoother with each run, meaning it would have more contact with the rails. Also ideally you would want to pull it more vertically to try and reduce the weight of the implement at the contact points
The fact that you guys (rogue) can provide us with live, high quality content is great!! Im staring at you, WSM! figure it out and give the strongman fans what they want. Rogue can! Nobody wants to wait months to watch what they already knew happened the same or next day! And my goodness, let the athletes film and provide content as well! It makes us feel like we are part of it and creates so much more depth and enjoyment to the overall competition. Thanks Rogue for being studs and again, looking at you WSM 😑
Thanks to Rogue for making this a free event for the fans!!
I feel sorry for the athletes that had to compete using this apparatus. It’s concerning that these issues weren’t worked out in development. Brian tried to tell them it was too heavy also.
I don't think it was the weight,as it was the friction on the tracks that was an issue.
Kinda of ridiculous the pulling surface was a mess.
I think the placement of the hooks down low on that frame are bad also. I think its causing them to pull up on the frame a bit. Needs to be higher for a more lateral pull.
@@Wogunder66yep, it needed to be around below the nose of the bull.
I think they saw Brian pull it 10 feet and failed to realize gow much the other 40 was going to sap people.
never seen these guys work so hard in my life
Yes that looked ridiculously hard
This event needs a redesign. I think the weight was fine, but the build / material and how it moves needs to be different if it is to come back in future.
*Theory 1:*
As that day was quite humid it's possible that sled would pick up moisture on the metal railing making the wood more wet with each run, and the paper (Friction of wood on steel - Radek Koubek, Karolina Dedicova) shows how the friction between metal and wood increases with wood's wetness. Not only the static and kinetic friction force would increase, but also the wood expanding could close the gaps between the wood and the railing increasing the friction area/pressure force from the sides, increasing the friction.
But the gaps between athlete runs were quite short, a few minutes only. Not sure how much moisture would build up on the railing in that time, so I presume the biggest moisture build up would be during the 1st run - done by Mateusz and less so on the runs after him.
*Theory 2:*
Floor got more wet with athletes sweat after every run, decreasing their foot grip. (They were sweating greatly due to humidity and heat)
*Theory 3:*
Mateusz is just that good and it was equally difficult for all of the athletes. (+ Mateusz didn't lose much energy on the deadlift, if any at all)
*Theory 4:*
Athletes are tired after Giants Live a week ago (Kieliszkowski didn't go there).
*Theory 5:*
Sled was picking up some debris (other than the moisture) from the railings.
*Theory 6:*
All of those combined.
Wood expands up to 1% for every 4% in it's moisture content (high humidity that day would increase the wood's moisture content if it wasn't properly cured) and additionally heat created by the friction also expands it. So it's possible that sled was tested in lower humidity conditions. If you look at the video closely you can see that the wood holds the metal railing from both sides and the gaps in between aren't that big. It would explain why is it so much harder for athletes to pull after 15-20ft, but it could be simply athletes gassing out? Hard to tell.
Another thing which noone has pointed out is that I believe nobody cleaned the flooring from sweat. With the high temperature and humidity if you look closely at the athletes they were sweating horrendusly. Sweat falling on the flooring or athletes falling on the flooring covering it entirely with sweat. It must have affected the grip for the athletes after them.
Now I'm not sure whether it was more difficult to pull as the event would go or not. Maybe. I'd expect Mateusz to win, with a margin, just not sure if with such a high margin... Rogue should do some testing on it, with repeated pulling and force measurement throughout the track. Though I doubt they would do it on camera as it would prove their mistake if there is any.
It would be interesting to see the state of the underside before and after. The wood could have become damaged over time, splintered etc
@@leonmunt6244 I doubt that there was any splintering, if anything it should only get smoother with each consecutive run... but it's possible I guess.
#6 and it poured rain after 2nd athlete. Mist would have still coated tread and equipment. Humidity ++ from down pours day before (you can see field saturated thursday). Moved to hallway in concourse with fans saturating humidity further.
@@likeyou3317 why would it get smoother? If it digs it will most certainly splinter
@@leonmunt6244 Well I guess it depends whether the wood touching the railing wa smooth and evenly cut from the start or rough and unevenly cut. I didn't work with wood much so it's hard to tell for me how it would behave in such conditions. My intuition tells me that when smooth wood and smooth metal meet they should slide along, without damaging the wood, I guess that'd also depend on the pressure between these 2.
Wood on metal doesn't go well plus bad flooring. Ive followed strongman since the 90's, as soon as i saw Shaw testing it , it was obvious that it wouldn't work that's why they added in the rope last minute , it was supposed to be without. Pulling events are hard to dial in. Rogue normally does events well but this just didn't work
Looks like they hired a self identifying engineer or something
@@armwrestlingfan6804I honestly wouldn't be to hard on rogue, they do such a good job normally, everyone screws up from time to time. I've seen so many pulling events crap the bed, it's probably the hardest one to get right
The flooring was perfect and the exact same thing they do for wheel of pain, it gives more traction than just a flat surface
@bdegrds but u said urself something is wrong with wood on metal.
@@armwrestlingfan6804yes but I'm just sayingno one gets it right every time
I think the issue is the sled angling slightly and binding the wood against the rails. You can see the gap open and close between the wood and the rails
Definitely not the best setup, but I guess the point is to move the unmoveable. I questioned how the wood would change over time.
Brian Shaw + staff found this in testing, it’s in Brian’s video about it, the sled angles when pulled laterally and pins itself to the rails
He should from now be known as The Iron Bull Mathias great performance in the circumstances 🙏🏻🇦🇺

Im not quite sure what happened, but its pretty evident the difficulty increased. The first few competitors flew out of the gate and towards the end they struggled for every inch. Unfortunate.
Is that why Hooper placed 2nd despite going 8th?

Terminator Mateusz 💪
Only the Terminator could finish and even he struggled. I think he gives more when the test becomes harder. Hid mind is solid steel with a burning fire inside. He must have been angry after not getting a deadlift rep. Talking about that deadlift, it also looks extremely tough. This is no ordinary deadlift and this pull was no ordinary pull.
I liked watching this event, as it was brutal and seemed safe. Injuries are always a risk. I dislike events when everybody is separated by split seconds. There was no doubting no who was better at this event. Then again, why re-invent the wheel when Rogue could have chosen instead a more conventional vehicle pull that also looks cool. Still, this is what innovation looks like. At least someone is trying to make things fresh and daring. The athletes should be well aware of the risks. It did look EXTREMELY tough, though.
B. Thompson is a great guy to have in your corner. Top bloke.
Great video!
Common mateusz kieliszkowski 💪🏻
Great Harness!! Mr. Nov.!!
Given how horrific this pull looked I wonder if Tom’s shoe coming off will mean he’s fresher than a lot of the other competitors tomorrow. The competitors who did a “full” pull looked absolutely shot.
Tom was still pulling when the whistle blew so I doubt it'll give him an advantage. It looks way too hard if only one person can finish and 3 WSM winners can't. I think in events like this it should be designed so at least half the competitors can finish and the rest measured for distance any harder and they're asking for serious injuries.
@@thechumpsbeendumped.7797 The rule of thirds is solid: an event is balanced if one third manages to finish it well within the time limit, one third finds it hard but managable and one third really struggles.
@@StrengthShowcasenot sure the field is that disparate in terms of strength/ability for this to be possible. I assume they are all within 10-15% of each other?
@@jtpro0244 Well sure, but even that 10-15 % can mean the difference between scoring 8 and 0 reps, as we saw on event 1. And between being the only one to finish vs barely moving the weight (event 2).
@@thechumpsbeendumped.7797 Possibly, from what I saw it looked like he was trying to get the position/purchase to resume the pull more so than actually pulling. He also looked pretty "okay" leaving the implement compared to others. Either way, the fact we have to even ask these questions goes to show how botched this event was.
great events
It looks as though Kieliszkowski was lower when he pulled, if you're higher up you get more friction trying to lift the impliment so it get friction from beneth the tracks as well, instead of sliding over them
The later athletes were probably more gassed from doing more reps on the deadlift. Hooper’s blend of power and conditioning was good enough for him to do well in both

This event is snap city.
I think there are three things wrong with this.
One the bull head tilts just slightly with every pull to the left or to the right and it takes a few seconds to readjust where you are going to pull.
Two the harness needs to be a dual harness that wraps around the hips as well. Thats the only driving force that the athletes can use and right now its not being used.
Three the pressure point to pull this thing easily is up higher, closer to the bulls eyes but they placed the pulling points at the bottom of the bulls head making it nearly impossible to pull this thing. I think you would have to be pulling up high (like what mateusz did) or nearly parallel to the floor to be successful at pulling this thing. There has to be a happy medium for these fixed points of pulling but its not where it is currently.
Dude slept 4-5 hours after 48 hour travel and still managed to not only win but be the only guy finishing within the time frame. Thats very impressive to say the least. Well done Mateuz
I think that the pullers that stood more upright did better. May have been the angle of the pull that effected the friction
Bon courage 💪

Wow you put these out fast

Super good stuff everybody!!!

EVa.. great position. Stance!! Crazy
Shoulder and chestbstraps and back harness.... owch no the hips and the Belt.... center or chest leading.
As I was watching competitor after competitor struggle, I rewound to Mateusz to check on a theory I was starting to develop. I thibk you need to work hard at not letting too much slack into that rope, as the taut rope helps you keep your hips down.
I like Rogue Strongman
Honestly, there's way too much suspicion around this event for Rogue to just sweep this one under the rug. Especially with Trey injured.
The more I think about it, the most suspicious thing is that nobody besides Mateusz was even capable of finishing (even if this is his event). I don't think I remember a single event where only one individual finished the thing. And given what I saw, you could have given anyone of the others guys 2 more minutes and nobody would have finished it, they were completely out of gas, heck look at Hooper and Singleton at the very end. And people who we were expected to finish it, even if considerably later, didn't.
@TheSLK66 the fitter athletes did the best. It was too heavy/there was too much friction, but I don't think there's anything beyond that. Remember the 500 kg yoke that blew up a bunch of achilles? Sometimes the simplest answer is the correct one.
@@josephaugustinerhodenhiser1353Actually no, it's not the simplest answer, it is the answer with minimal assumptions. You're assuming none of these guys are as fit as Mateusz, hard to believe. You're also assuming the weight is too much too handle for these crazy strong guys. Trey tore his heel because probably abandoned form by pushing himself beyond his 100%. I only need to assume this overcomplicated set-up for a simple pulling event could make friction get worse.
@@TheSLK66 Mateusz is the fitest of these guys, look at Mateusz on the frame carry at ASC. I agree it was an overcomplicated set-up, I just disagree with the idea that the implement got harder for each consecutive athlete. The order was not actually predictive of the result.

I would like to see the temperatures of the track and wood (where it touches the track), it had to be heating up, making it harder and harder. First guy that went did the best, by 6ft, he must have heated up the track, then they reset it back on the track really fast with 9 people, making even more heat. It looked almost immovable by the end.

The track for foot traction was ridiculously awkward for the guys to use.
I agree and understand Matiaz is annoy the amount of problems for travel to US. It should be easy

Harness... on the waist.... center gravity.. tough.. thighs and big chest!!!
Did they grease the tracks at the beginning of the event or something? Seems like it got exponentially heavier from the first to last competitor.
They also had arguably the best puller go first. Even before the event Brian said Mateusz Kieliszkowski!!!! Would likely win it.
They had the best puller go first. Obviously it's gonna look easier for him
When the guy who went 8th (3rd from last) got 2nd, it's kind of hard to argue that the event MUST HAVE gotten exponentially harder each time. And the guy who won just happens to be the best puller in the entire competition. Seems like a lot of guys struggled due to lack of proper technique, proper footwear, and proper preparation.
Part of the risk you take with introducing a new implement, but damn, shame trey got injured on this. Tearing the achilles is a lengthy process to recover and even then, we've seen in other sports, they're never fully the same post injury.
Not sure what the issue was but it makes u wonder if tom or trey had gone 1st what the outcomes would be.

Athletes were chalked up, after each athlete with chalk maybe getting on the rails of the implement? Causing more friction of the wood on the rails?
I was thinking it came in out of the weather a little damp snd maybe dried out as the event went on.
@@glhandlerIt would be then easier to pull as drier wood has less friction on metal.
I knew when I saw brian struggling in practice this damn sled would be so hard

Polska GUROM!
We wanna rematch!! Fix Harness!! Shoukder straps. High mid back. For Leading
There obviously is something wrong with the implement.
At the 15 feet mark every athlete gets almost pulled back by it.
Bryan was pulling it without the rope, making it look easy
It would be easy to test whether it got harder by measuring the force in a succession of pulls 10 times just like the event, you'd have data. Also, what if resins from inside the wood were released as the event went on causing the coefficients of friction to increase. We can have a big circle jerk guessing at what happened, or we could just measure it.
Well, since the guy who went 8th scored 2nd place, it might have been more of a technique and footwear issue than a changing of friction issue. Footing looked to be a HUGE contributing factor to the poorest performances.
Might be, maybe they need to ensure the sled is pulled evenly and not potentially shift side to side. Brian mentioned Monday that Mitch and Mateusz had the correct shoes, most athletes didn't. I'm sure Rogue will improve it, I just think new event should have a comprehensive testing phase. The fact that they asked Brian to test it after he arrived, without the correct shoes, shows not enough focus was put into this. I know Rogue wants to be safe and have good events, I just hope they take this as a lessoned learned and put a little more into testing new events.
@@dustinm800 The sled shifting to the side would be due to improper pulling technique, wouldn't it?
I don't see how they could realistically do comprehensive testing. It would take 100 cloned Brian Shaws to really put the device through it's paces without involving the actual competitors. And let's be honest, Shaw is able to do things other strongmen simply can't, so even with 100 Shaws doing 10 pulls each over the course of a month might have still netted the same results.
@@theKashConnoisseur if they keep it on the rails I think they'll change the way the harness is attached the sled so the choice of pulling technique is more forgiving or they may follow Loz's advice and attach the bull to the rogue-a-coaster and remove that element all together. Visually that would be cooler anyway, and likely safer.
@@dustinm800 Yeah a higher attachment point, even just a few inches, would have probably made quite a difference. I do like having a truckpull-like event though, so I hope they don't just combine it with the coaster event. I think that next Rogue Invitational, a lot of guys will have the right footwear, will have spent training hours practicing specifically for this event, and things will go a lot smoother.
I hope they don't try to bring this event back, and they thought they would do it without a rope..? It's clear that there was something wrong with the equipment. It appeared as if the friction was building up between the sled and the frame , causing it to stick more with each athlete But I guess that's part of strongman unfortunately when a new event pops up its trial and error the first few times till they figure it out
Meeting with athletes:
Brian to athletes - it's not possible to finish!
Athletes to Brian - what about Kieliszkowski?
Brian to athletes - don't tell him!
❤
I also think the sled was too heavy and the main problem was the uneven ground with the boards. In pulling events like this you have to stay low for your legs to be able to assist and keep momentum going.
When you go low on this ground what happens is you slip and fall, everyone realized that shortly after the start and they all lost their initial momentum and couldn´t get it back. What a shame, this could have been
an awesome event without the terrible friction and the uneven ground.
Did Licis not compete?
They mention it looks like it is getting harder to pull as the event goes on.... I wonder if the friction back and forth during the pull and reset is warming the wood up and it's becoming just that tiniest bit softer, which would make it grip more?
I'm not that familar with strongman events and whatthe usual sled pull looks like, but I can definitely see a potential where this changes between the first and last content..
Which would really suck to be honest and be pretty unfair... But just a theory
Why mateusz only 45s?????
👏💪🇵🇱
It seems like the friction on the tracks gets harder to pull after every man pulling on it.
I would imagine that the more attempts were made, the hotter the rail and wood would get, and the more friction you would experience. Seems odd design wise.
Brian did it in 39 secs testing without rope ?
The were messing with weights for him too though. I think his 39 seconds was lighter than the comp weight.
@@madskater5it's also Brian who is notorious for being better when it's heavier

If you average... 6ft6. 380LBs... crazy...
This looks like a case of great design on this implement, but not enough proper engineering and testing. Shaw tested it for weight, but they clearly didn't put it through like 100 pulls to see how it held up. They could have come up with solutions like oiling the track after each pull, or lining the inside of the wooden bull tracks, etc. Hopefully it's a learning experience for Rogue for next year. Shame about Trey.
Yea the bull looks cool but that track design is what got trey injured. wood on metal is a odd choice and they deserve a more efficient design
I think the thing being made out of wood played a part in it becoming more and more difficult.
It didn't get harder though. The best pullers went before and thats how it is. The implementation was way too heavy
If they grease the rails and put rockets on it, then I could do the sled.
The sled needs a little lube on the wood it will make it slide better 😮
