This brand new JTC masterclass will take you through from the Blues basics to the soloing confidence of the stars! Crammed full of lessons, exercises, licks and solos, this full course has been designed step-by-step to take your Blues soloing to the next level!
We're tackling a BIG subject this time. Blues is like a coal seam running through the rock of so much music. Even if you don't play blues, you might play music that exists because of blues... jazz, classic rock, soul, funk? So with that in mind, Blues is undeniably a cornerstone of modern music that will benefit your playing greatly if you develop it's skills and techniques! This series is a full course covering Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced levels so no matter what level you are currently at you can use this to push your Blues playing to new levels, fill in the gaps in your knowledge or if you're advanced enough even brush up on your old skills to dust off those Blues chops!
The beginner volume covers a lot of ground! We'll be looking at 'what is Blues?', the 12-bar structures, minor blues, common blues scales (Minor Pentatonic, Aeolian, Dorian and Blues), arpeggio playing and more. You'll also be using exercises to internalise the key concepts, example licks to fit them into usable chunks of musical content and a final full solo to piece everything together in a real world example! This section covers the basics of blues playing with very accessible levels of difficulty to give you the perfect framework and foundation to build up those Blues abilities!
The intermediate volume takes things up a level and covers 'standard blues' (using dominant chords), targeting chord tones, microtone bends, exploiting the major/minor ambiguity and relies more on a bluesy phrasing style. You'll also encounter a few more complicated ideas in the licks such as adding in chromatics, lydian dominant scales, super locrian scales and even some half/whole diminished ideas! You'll find exercises designed to drill home the main ideas and engrain them deeply in your playing so that they're there when you need them most and licks to give you fresh ideas and inspiration on how to use these concepts musically. Finally, we have not one, but two full solos! One covers a longer exploration of the concepts covered in the licks and the second takes a more full on approach to attitude and phrasing.
The Advanced volume is designed to take your blues playing further than before by dipping into a little bit of Jazz! Using Jazz concepts in Blues can provide a variety of complex and interesting sounds! In this volume we'll be covering the harmonic approaches of turning a standard blues into a jazz blues with extended chords, chromatic chords, approach notes and enclosures on arpeggios, chromatic passing tones, targeting chord tones, double-stops, super-imposing arpeggios, mixolydian scales, blues scales, altered scales and more! The exercises here will give you a lot to work on, which will help to push your blues playing and the licks will both challenge and inspire you to use the concepts to create your own ideas. The full solo will piece everything together, covering all of the concepts, scale and ideas laid out in the licks in one difficult and highly tasteful solo!
Overall, throughout the full three part course we will be covering a lot of ground! If you can work your way though all three volumes, internalising and absorbing each concept as you learn it, you'll be well on your way to becoming a master of the Blues and soloing with the creative freedom you've always aspired for!
As ever, we have included everything you need to practise and perfect the material in this package, the core of which will be the three main masterclass PDF documents. There are also video and audio tracks for you to watch/listen and study, accurately transcribed TAB/notation for you to analyse and master, and backing tracks for everything!

Just some constructive criticism... Jake Wilson is a phenomenal player, no doubt. My problem with these JTC packs is that there is very little "teaching" going on. It's more focused on learning the licks. I've purchased these "masterclass" products before from JTC, only to be disappointed that in some cases the player doesn't even speak to the camera. The conversation and discussion part of learning is just as fundamental as the physical playing. Explaining an exercise or concept goes a long way. Unfortunately, there's no way for me to tell if this product is like some of the previous ones. JTC should take a look at Truefire and how they approach teaching. JTC has more interesting and modern players, but the "teaching" aspect is lacking IMO.

Agreed, though I do like the notes included sometimes with the licks and exercises. I'd definitely like to see more of that.

Elliot Grey thanks for your feedback. JTC products have historically been about being inspired by the player and learning from their playing alone. The masterclass style products have added an extra layer of depth to this with addition of exercises and the accompanying PDF, which provides the core lesson element of these style products. This then ends up with the licks and solos to put the concepts into a real life musical backdrop. The reason we provide written lesson material rather than spoken is for a couple reasons. The first is that with such an international artist base not all of our artists are comfortable speaking English to camera. The second being that with an international customer base, spoken English could also be an issue. This can be resolved with so many translate tools for written words (hence the PDF). A third reason is that many customers have said they prefer the written lesson part as it's easier to follow.
However, we always listen to our customers and now that we are releasing more of these masterclass style products, maybe it's time for a new customer survey to get more feedback for future ones!
Hope this info helps for the meantime!

Yes I guess that's a good point you've made, and I've thought the same thing myself. I've been playing for some years and I've used a lot of lick library DVDs and downloads, where things are explained by a teacher, such as the more technical aspects of how an exercise, whether it be a lick, techniques or whatever, is best approached. This is absent from JTC downloads. However, I would still recommend their products, but perhaps not for beginners, who would definitely need more detailed guidance. I've tried alternate picking, sweep picking, tapping and other techniques, not entirely successfully, but I don't need to be told how to approach them as I've learned how it should be done (doesn't mean I'm an expert at it). But a beginner is not likely to know where to start without being told. However for intermediate players like myself, I think JTC is a great way to progress your playing. I have the Blues Soloing complete set and I started about half way through the beginners section (I'm pretty much beyond the initial exercises at my current stage of development), and in just a week of getting through the second half of that section I already feel as though I've learned some new things, and if nothing else I've added some great licks to my arsenal... and I haven't even started on the intermediate or advanced sections yet..! There's so much there to learn, and if you're at a similar stage as myself it will definitely improve your playing hugely. I can also recommend John F Klaver for Blues, especially Outside Concepts, and check out Martin Miller's Fusion Licks. Again, like you say, there is no 'teaching' as such, but if you're at a certain level it's quite self explanatory. But yes I agree with your point, which is indeed a constructive one... I hope JTC is listening to you.

I'd still like to see more notes included sometimes with the licks and exercises. They often are, but if it became a standard for JTC, their content would be immeasurably valuable. Knowing what you're playing and why is maybe more important than just learning a new lick.
Currently, my favourite JTC course by far is the Major Scale Soling masterclass, with Jake Wilson. The individual licks and exercises are incredibly beautiful, especially in the intermediate section of the course, and the exercises are themselves musical, and are based on useful variations of scales.
I've been studying guitar as an amateur for about ten years, and, although it didn't have playing notes for the individual licks (save for the advanced course), I don't think I've learned as much from one course as I have from this one. I couldn't recommend it more highly, and thanks be to JTC.

Embree Smith Hi Embree, the emphasis of the masterclass is on the various progressions that are associated with the blues rather than blues as a genre. Sorry you don't like the tones.

Jake Willson look man the tones are great. Don't let anybody tell you that blues should sound a certain way. Jimmy Hendrix changed people's minds about that 50 fuckin' years ago. I have the complete set for Blues Soloing, and I really like the Curtis Mayfield sound you have for the beginners section, which I duplicated for those exercises and licks. You use a more bluesy tone in the intermediate section, which I will also duplicate when I get there. I think it's all really well worked out man, I love it, it's a great way to learn. Maybe people should give your work a try before criticising...
