    Great reaction. This song touches me in the most profound way, as do many of Ren's songs. I can fully relate to the lyrics, having dealt with these issues for more than 25 years now. It is a daily battle.

    I've understood that alluding to 'floating like a Chalk Outline' is about the disconnection you may feel with taking mental health medication. What a track. I always lose it when Chinchilla kicks it up a gear after the acapella section.

    I agree. I have seen and listened to all Ren’s ‘stuff’ many times but Chalk Outlines is the one I listen to the most. It is beautifully perfect - and perfectly beautiful - and the blend of their voices is exquisite.

    Thank you for a great reaction! As someone that takes meds for depression and adhd I relate well to this song. The numbness makes you feel dead inside, hence walking around in a chalk outline. Then pretending to be happy with a new (short-lived) habit.
    *Another magical song of theirs is How To Be Me.

    I am so grateful you reviewed this track - it's been stuck in my head for a while now ;) As someone who was bedridden in UK 8 years ago (Ehlers Danlos Syndrome) to now married and mobile in NM... Ren's journey is one I am grateful to follow now. & I am sure I am not the only he speaks to ;)
    I feel the 'chalk outlines' are the fear of death... when you are ill/bedridden, you are grateful for anything you can get... and a smile helps. I was lucky to have found a holistic approach after years of many pills... and it works for me. This track has so much emotion, I feel he probably wrote it in the time he was bedridden too - just grateful his journey is progressing in a good way now :)
    Thank you for sharing this though - Ren is amazing... and as a now 56 year old I am grateful others are seeing that too - may his authenticity spread ;)

    Two things, first I have suffered with depression on and off (more on than off) all my adult life. Hearing you dissect this song puts a lot of things in place. Thanks.
    The second, I have been playing this video for nearly a year now since Ren was suggested to me by CZcams, just enjoying the beauty of this song. "Bury myself with a big smile", not drugs, not booze but finding wonderful music.

    Great reaction. Yes, that fragility of identity and balance to make life bearable seems a great fit for the chalk outlines. I love this song.

    He was actually busking in Brighton. He became ill when he was 19 or 20 but was misdiagnosed and therefore medicated incorrectly for around 7 years when he finally found out that he had Lyme disease. During this time he recorded in his bedroom when he felt well enough and produced the album Freckled Angels, which contained some of the songs he did with Sony and some new ones. He received Stem cell treatments in America which have allowed him to have a somewhat normal life but he still suffers severe symptoms including the fact that he can only eat a handful of foods as he is allergic to everything else. He's been receiving treatment in Canada to try and further eliviate his symptoms. I think chalk outlines relates to the fact that when you take the pills you're just empty inside walking around with just your body with no real feelings.

    Having suffered from severe depression and been placed on many different medications/combinations of meds. For Me, I can honestly say, I would take my pills before bed and hope to wake up as someone different. But no matter how many pills/combination of pills I tried, my biggest side effect was me feeling emotionally numb. So there were so many times I feel like I literally lived out these lyrics. I always described it as barely keeping my face above water. And walking around dead inside. That's what chalk outlines means for me. And while I'm better now, I can't listen to it without sobbing.

    I passed through 4 major depression episodes for my life and probably a few others are still in queue. Through my medication, that same old feeling of hollowness was there, I felt like I turned in to an empty shell, but hey what could we do more about it rather that hiding under a big great smile and waiting for the pendulum to return back, before it rise again... Also, thanks for noticing Chinchilla's beautiful voice, but this song is just a tip of an iceberg of her talent. I would like to encourage you to try her solo performances such as "Vero Presents: Chinchilla - Fingers Live".

    For me the Chalk Outlines could be the fuzziness you feel after taking medication. Your not fully aware with the drugs but in an induced comatose state half aware and half not. Been aware he was misdiagnosed for years and given inappropriate medication.

    I think he might be saying “new hair bit” in the British sense, meaning a new hairstyle just changing a little. Ren has a cut I’d say you have to keep pretty active on and you get into how it looks and changing it up. So kind of a new habit too, and maybe I’m nuts.

    • @James-In-Exile
      @James-In-Exile Před rokem +3

      He clearly sings "a new habit". As a Brit, I can tell you there's no doubt on that.
