- As much as I love vintage sewing patterns, sometimes it's nice to have a change and make a modern pattern. What's even better is when I can find modern patterns that look vintage. The best of both worlds!
This project was so quick and easy to make and I wholeheartedly recommend this pattern, especially if you're new to vintage sewing.
The 1920s is a new decade for me but seeing as I missed several hair cuts thanks to Covid and I have a bob now I thought it's the perfect time to give this era a go.
I hope you like my modern but vintage 1920s dress!

Good news team! I've found some places where you can still buy this pattern. Digital copies available here: sewing.patternreview.com/Patterns/104197 check the description for hard copies for sale in the UK.
The Anna dress not need a small spilt at the front, as it plenty of ease and room in it. Hence withou the spilt you will not be concerned about too much flesh showing.
Hi team! So it looks like the independent pattern designer I bought this pattern from has since shut up shop 😞 sorry for recommending a pattern that you can't get your hands on! If the designer starts up again I'll update the links etc. Happy sewing! 💚
What a shame, hey. I rarely wear dresses, but I went straight to the site after seeing yours. Oh well, yours does look so comfy. I hope it sees you through many a summer.
Maybe there's enough of us to prompt a reprint/reissue?
- Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi
The pattern is still available at Minerva and Patternreview! Sadly there's no way (afaict) to get it directly from the designer anymore
@@AnnaDeeDee thank you!!!
That interfacing tip is very good! Thank you!
That dress looks lovely on you, glad to see you!
It's a great make, thanks for sharing Claude. BTW - the fusing tip, that's a keeper! 😊
Completely agree on getting A0 prints. I haven't the energy or patience for sticking pages together! 😆 Lovely dress and fabric btw - really suits you ☺️
Also, might be a random/odd comment but I find your videos very calming and soothing to watch. I often end up watching one on bad health days ❤️
I love this dress on you as the colour is perfect!
I love that it has a a waistband. It would look great on curves like mine. And to think i thought i couldnt wear 20s dresses
yayyyyy! you're back and well ❤❤ your hair looks great, and i am sure the dress will too but i was too excited to wait for the end of the video to comment!
I hope it doesn't disappoint 💚
Love watching your sewing videos. It's like we are sewing together over a weekend or something. So lovely. :)
A virtual sewing retreat! 💚
you look like you're loving wearing that dress! and it looks like it will be so cool and comfy over the summer :D
I do love wearing it. Somehow it makes me feel really cool ☺️
This dress looks comfortable and roomy. I love the burnt orange colour too. Also love the Charleston dance at the end to finish off 😆.
What can I say? My natural grace and poise just shines through 😆
Brilliant dress, you look amazing. I love the tie in the center, it gives the dress shape but without making it stiff looking. The hem styling is great and I think it helps with the drape of the fabric, but I can see how a seated position might be a little uneasy. Have to say that I would go for this one. Glad to see you back.
Thank you 💚
Wonderful pattern, loved the fabric colour.
It is so much easier wrangling A0 sheets of paper than having to stick lots and lots of A4 together especially as I'm plus sized. When one of my Historical patterns was 96 A4 pages or 8 A0 I know which I'm going for. I also like these new fangled digital patterns as you get proper paper instead of tissue. Lasts so much longer for frequently used patterns.
Hi Claude. What a fantastic dress! It suits you beautifully - both pared-down contemporary and 1920s accessorised. I don't sew, but that's a style I would buy and wear. Unusual for me, as I don't tend to go for anything with even a hint of a waist. But that soft, broad sash looks incredibly pleasing.
Super cute, it's good to have you back.
Such classic dress. Wonderful choice. The color is very rich too. Congratulations!! 😊
Hi, i discovered the prym mending needle it's excellent for burying overlocking threads. Thank you for your vlogs. 👌👏👍❤️
So glad to see you back! I truly love see what you make. I may have to buy that pattern because 😍
It's so simple to make too! 10/10 recommend 💚
Always up for some awkward flapping. I love the fabric!
You do look stunning and your little dance moves are so cute. Another enjoyable video. Thank you.
This was fun to watch come together and you look lovely in it. Hooray!! 🌹🌹🌹🍾✌️
How on earth did I miss this!! Claude this is so cute I adore it!!
This dress is so perfect on you!! That color!! Splendid!!
So lovely to have you back! Please try not to overwork yourself. I so much wish that I still had time and energy to do this kind of work; I have a pattern (somewhere) for a 1919 dress that I really think must have been this woman's wedding gown. I would so love to make it up again. My compliments upon your own work.
Have no fear, I actually made this dress about a year ago and have been spending most of my time editing in bed. Movie magic I guess 😁
Welcome back. Love how your hair looks, it goes so nicely with your dress. The dress is very pretty, I love how drapy it is, it looks so comfortable and cool.
The dress design, fabric color and drape are all so lovely! Another wonderful video to watch and be inspired, thank you so much!
Thank you, Claude, for another wonderful video. You are a great teacher, it is always fun and educational to watch your videos. Your haircut and dress go together perfectly! Lovely! p.s. special thank you to your Mum for helping out too.
I'll pass on your thanks!
I happened to catch the closing sale and picked up this pattern as well as a few others. I love how you shared the construction and will be using this video as a guide!
I just got an overlock machine. This was helpful on using it in an actual project.
I recently tried the same technique for the facing- before your video came out, oof, but 1) forgot to clip the curves and 2) got impatient with rolling it back. Don't be me and have to put that messy facing on the back to hide it, lol. I always walk away with a technique or tip in your sewing that helps me later. This dress looks really comfortable and that color!
Lovely dress. That’s a great pattern. That color is beautiful on you.
Awww gee thanks ☺️
It's so pretty and the color is so flattering! And who doesn't love swishy skirts?
Hi there - just discovered your channel and subscribed. I love the gathered, sewn-in sash and the facing technique is brilliant - I’ll definitely use it. I’ve made a few of the 1920’s “one hour dress” with separate sash, which can also be worn as a scarf. I was contemplating putting some elastic inside the back waist to make them more fitted, but I think now I will undo a bit of the side seams and put in the gathered sash like yours. Thank you for the ideas. Best wishes from Lynette, a granny in Aberdeenshire - you can teach an old dog new tricks!
Welcome back! Dress looks so good!
So pretty! Love linen blends and the color is great on you!
Love this ❤ you always give the best tips. I'm using your method to draw out the seams in my current project, and I don't think I've ever been so calm sitting in front of the machine.
I'm so glad you've found it helpful ☺️
That is a marvelous dress! I love the way it looks on you.
I have some spring/summer fabric I've been meaning to sew up, I may just get that pattern.
Perfect for a summery fabric 💚
That's what i though, but the pattern seems to be gone.
@@mevrouwmevrouw4413 oh no!!! You're right! It looks like the company has since gone out of business 😞
@@RetroClaude it's what it is. Now you have kindled a curiousity in me to think up something similar for myself..
So, great activity for the mind. I am not complaining. Really love what you made and it suits you perfectly. ❤️
It's a triumph, Claude! The colour is lush, the drape is gorgeous, and I particularly love the sashes that cinch it in at the waist. Like you, I don't favour loose, shapeless dresses, but this one is stylish and beautiful 😍
So cool and unusual looking, love it!
I love the dress and it's very flattering on you.
Lovely
Thanks for some great new content!
Totally gorgeous! 🥰🐾
Gorgeous dress! The colour is so delightful on you
It's so nice and swishy!
A stunning dress! 🥰
This was a wonderful video, loved the dress when it came out too it looks fantastic.
Well Done!
That looks so comfy! The fabric colour you picked is really lovely :)
Congratulations on such a lovely dress!
That’s a great dress!
Love the volume! Your facing looks so precise!
Thats a great dress and looks lovely on you
That color is lovely on you and the fabric just drapes beautifully. It will be perfect for the summer!
OOOOH wow I love this pattern! I think I probably need to make one of these as well
I adore this dress, I think I'll have to pick up this pattern (hopefully I can find it secondhand). I also always learn so many new tricks from your videos, will definitely be using that interfacing one!
Love the dress. And those sandals…. I have a pair exactly like yours, they are just so comfortable to wear.
Welcome back ^_^
So cute!! So sad the designer had to close their shop. That pattern looks like it would be super flattering on a lot of different body types. The orange fabric you used was a terrific choice.
I completely understand the skirt hem vs. wheelchair struggles.
Lovely and more projects for me ;)
You could also wear it over a sweater and leggings for colder weather too good you used linen so versatile!
Thanks to mum for the help! This looks like the perfect summer dress and I love the technique you used with the facing. It finishes everything so nicely and, more or less, easily. Most instructions will say to clip into the seam allowance of the dress where the pocket meets the side seam, but I think that undermines the stability of the seam overall and increases the risk of fraying. Do you have any thoughts on that?
Weirdly enough, I also made an orange, linen-blend, vintage-inspired dress semi-recently!
Great minds think alike!! I'm generally of the opinion that if you can get away with not clipping it, don't clip it. Like you say you compromise the integrity of the fabric and it means you can't alter things later on! If it's an edge that's going to be completely enclosed like the facing here then I'll clip it.
Your Charleston is better than mine!🤣
Like .so beautiful 👏👍🥰
Incredible dress, so simple and yet so stunning! Would you say it runs true to size? Although I suppose for such a loose-fitting dress it could be a matter of preference...
I only recently found your channel and you've quickly become one of my favorite sewing channels around here. Sending lots of love from Germany! :)
I would say yes it's true to size but of course with this much positive ease it can be difficult to tell.
Valeu!
That is a really lovely dress. And the colour really suits you. Well done.
Shame the shop is closed up at the present. It looks like something that could fit even on busty, curvy, short waisted, swayed back me. Ah well.
- Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi
I've found a place still selling it online if you're interested ☺️
This is just exquisite. The style, the fabric and especially the colour look wonderful on you.
Would it be possible to put in a couple of discreet snaps or hooks and eyes so that if you wear this dress while using your wheelchair, you don't have to worry about the handkerchief hem exposure issues? It's not very nice, or relaxing, to have to think about such things constantly while wearing an otherwise lovely garment.
Do you know that's quite a good idea! I think I could have the snaps on the inside so they're hidden. No more flashing!
❤
It's beautiful on you. Like a million dollars 💕
Thank you so much 💚
If I can ask.. are you happy with your mini iron? Any thoughts? Or maybe you speak about it in some of your previous videos? I'm considering buying it, so any advice would be helpful. Thanks and it's good to see you again 💖
I've been very happy with it but... It's recently stopped steaming. Disappointing after only about 18months and it wasn't cheap! So I'm not sure I can really recommend it anymore. I might see if I can take it apart and fix it
@@RetroClaude oh no...i was hoping it would be a great solve for me..seems it quite handy and light...thank you anyway
@@esterao8787 as a concept it's great and has been game changing for me. If you can find a better, similar product do let me know 💚
You can buy this pattern from Minerva
Beginner's question but when you overlock your seams, you do not cut away at the edges, right? So that when you sew your seams it has the same seam allowance.
Love the dress btw.
Yes, when I overlock each piece flat I only use the blade to cut away any loose threads that have frayed, not the fabric itself. If I'm overlocking a seam together I cut away the seam allowance 💚
@@RetroClaude Makes total sense. Thanks for getting back to me so quickly!
Overlockers still scare me...
@@patricianaezer1077 oh yeah they take some courage and lots of focus!
It is a shame that that pattern is no longer available
I've found a place where you can still buy it! Check the updated description 😊
grand dress but where is your Bernina?
The making of this dress was actually filmed last year, before Covid struck me down so no new Bernina yet 💚
