Same Pattern Different Dress | Making a 1960s Dress from a Vintage Sewing Pattern

- A new decade for me and my first ever 1960s project! This was part of a collaboration hosted by @AnnabelleAndBensAntics and it was so much fun to make my own version of this travelling vintage sewing pattern.
My vintage winter wardrobe is severally lacking and so this woolly dress should keep me warm and stylish all winter.
But with no toile and a whirlwind selection of different seam allowances, will the finished dress actually fit me?

The next video in this series is here! Watch Nani from Seamstressed make an amazing dress with Bees!!! czcams.com/video/4a0XyGItCkw/video.html
Nice result! I think the bodice zipper is to accommodate the larger, 'set once a week at the salon' hairdos of the late 50s- early 60s. Many of my mother's friends did their hair this way and probably found the larger neck convenient. I have a vintage cashmere pullover with a crew neck and a fine back zipper, added for the same reason I believe.
If I might say, not only are you a person with an excellent personal collection of lovely knitwear, as well as a skilled hand with a needle and thread, but your modelling of the finished article is certainly one of your most noticeable additional skills. Clothing creators on you tube are not often the best people to show off their garment, but you have it off to a Tee! Please keep the projects coming, we love them!
A lovely winter dress to add to your wardrobe! Having been born in the fifties, raised in the sixties and seventies I’d say you picked the perfect fabric (and fibre) for your version of the dress! Beautifully executed!
Thank you! It's always nice to know when you get something vintage as close to authentic as possible 😁
Ooh, what a treat! A gentle English voice with no loud shouty stuff and no loud pumped up dance music!
Just subscribed because it’s comfortable to watch.
I absolutely love that fabric - it’s perfect, the bust darts are really unusual and that style suits you well.
I love watching sewing videos, now I’m getting too old to sew much myself - and I remember that style of dress. Suitable wear for a secretary in the sixties 😅
I wondered if you could have used some bias binding sewn onto the hem of the sleeves and the skirt bottom, then hand stitched. It makes a more subtle hem transition. Nevertheless, it was a wonderful video and I look forward to more. ❤
I learnt to sew in the 60s. With sleeves I learnt to sew them in on the widest stitch. Easy to take out to fix. Then, when perfect sew in with a normal stitch. I remember doing all the darts. 😃
Wore dresses just like this but with a pencil skirt and more fitted top as shown on the pattern cover. Late 50s, early 60s are my favorite fashion silhouette. Very sophisticated.
What a lovely dress. Also a fun idea
My grandmother had some of these patterns with funny Seam allowances. She said the allowances were different because you could alter the garment in specific places more than others.
That makes sense! Especially when you think of the volume at the sleeve head and the extra seam allowance there. It would be relatively simple to raise the shoulder and you wouldn't have to cut a new sleeve, most likely, if it was a small enough difference
Yeah. Large seam allowances at the side for ease of adjustment. I've seen that in old sewing books, and in action.
I have a dress from I believe 1970 (still pretty much later 1960s in style), made by a professional seamstress, that I got years ago from a family friend whose it used to be when she was a teenager - it has the same wide seam allowances at the sides.
Also, I've noticed that Bilikis Signatures here on CZcams (a seamstress from Nigeria who does drafting and sewing tutorials) still cuts her side seam allowances that wide.
It really is a practical solution, allowing you to potentially alter the dress quite easily if you gain some weight, and prolong its life!
We wore dresses with that silhouette in the early sixties. It was always acceptably professional-looking yet comfy! You took me back to those years. It was great, and I must say, a classic never ages!
Sisterhood of the Traveling Pattern!! I love it!! And it really suits you ♥️ I love it!!
I love the dress 😍 the fabric, sleeve length, bodice shape and the gathering at the waist 🥰 Yes definitely needs the lining 😉 I'm going to see what pattern I have that I can make into a winter dress 😘 Excellent sewing and it looks gorgeous on you with your shoes and stockings 🥰
I love this idea. Kudos to Annabelle. Another reason I love vintage sewers is that you get to see a range of body shapes and how patterns will work on a variety of body types and sizes. I love your result.
I love the finished dress, especially the fabric. And you look gorgeous in the reveal!
I love it and it looks so nice and warm. Cloths were made so much better back then as they had to last. No throwing them away at the end of the season. Thank you for sharing again. The best to you.
I love the pattern and the resulting dress. It reminds me of what I used to wear in the 60s!
Totally beautiful!
Nope the waist looks so perfect I love this rendition
Yesssss I can't wait!!!
stunning dress
You look Fab in that dress❤️
so lady like and such a classic look just timeless. you look wonderful Claude
I love your trick to trace the pattern pic. I can't draw a stick figure. I like it because you can add or take away embellishments.
I also like your dress.
The dress is elegant, your hair and makeup are superb, and I love the ferocious guitar music.
Cool idea to have a pattern chain letter! You chose a great version of the pattern for your body.
How strange to have two zippers on a dress. You did a great job with it. I hope it does the job of keeping you warm.
Just beautiful and, as always, a good learning. Experience. Thank you.
I LOVE LOVE your fabric!!
Thank you! 💚
This dress version looks good! BRAVO!!!
You look SO PRETTY! I finished grading the pattern yesterday! Those seam allowances are a NIGHTMARE! I wanted to watch your video after I got started so I was not biased lol.
The struggle was real hahahaha
The seam allowances! Why?????
The finished dress is lovely, and so flattering! The fabric was a perfect choice. Seeing the differences in finished items by different makers from one pattern is incredibly cool.
I somehow didn't have the time/spoons for watching the whole video when it was new, but now that I've come back to it: that's a perfect winter dress and now I want one like it! Which is a weird desire to discover when it's 30+ Celsius outside. :D That skirt silhouette with the side gathers is _so_ early 1960s, I love it.
I’ve never thought to trace the pattern illustration to create your design my mind is blown 😮
Elegant and beautiful dress on you. Thank you for sharing.
Your dress turned out so very very lovely. You make me want to sew with wool. Wool always makes me nervous because I can't stand wearing it if it is even the least bit itchy! Thank you for sharing your problem solving process and for always reminding me there are things I can do as a disabled sewist to conserve spoons! The dress looks so cozy and flattering, and yes, very different from Annabelle's version. Two stunning makes from one pattern. I can't wait to follow along to see what else is made with this pattern! What a fun collaboration idea.
Wow what a look! You rock that dress! Thank you for showing how to line the dress.
I really like the very slightly raised waistline in this garmet. It gives it a very personal touch, quite elegant!
I watched Carnival of Souls tonight and the main character was wearing a dress with a top like this one and I was like “hey I’ve seen this before!”
😂❤
Well, that turned out beautifully!
Great final product. It looks great. Keep inspiring.
Lovely! The skirt gathers are so satisfying!
I love this dress!!
You are wonderful! I loved watching this video and the bonus round was your garden stroll! I don't think I have ever subscribed to a channel so fast! You are truly amazing Dear lady!!! TYVM for this video! And you DO look stunning in this creation!
I just love how you explain your work process!!
You look absolutely beautiful in this dress.
My gawd....your skin is like porcelain. So beautiful. And she sews. What other gifts has god blessed you with?
Very pretty
Nice - I think the ribbon at the neckline is lovely.
I'm so glad you made that skirt version! it's a really lovely shape!
That's just beautiful on you!
What a fantastic idea.!
The extreme close up of your fingers easing the sleeves in was very interesting. I am self-taught and have never been able to figure out what I am supposed to be doing when I am manipulating ease through the machine.
Yes easing is one of those things where it's like huh? Do I really just smush it about a bit with my fingers until it fits? Difficult to describe and difficult to demonstrate you just have to feel it which is not useful advice when you're not sure what you're doing!
This looks great on you! It's a very very nice shape, and I like the slightly high waistline - it seems to suit the fullness in the skirt without looking too voluminous. I'd love to see a summery version too...
Love this dress. Looks great.
oh my gosh Claud I LOVE IT!!!!!! Well done, it looks amazing on you :D
SO cute!
oooo, that is stunning ❤
Sisterhood of the traveling pattern!! Love this!! Came out beautiful Claude and I think that's a wonderful fall/winter dress on you
It looks great! A wonderful neutral dress to jazz up with loads of different colors. I really like that shape on you, and the texture of the fabric is cool.
Very nice. The style you choose suits you well!
I love this dress
Such a 'smart' look on you!! Fabulous job!
It's a super dress and you've done a great job. Wish I could sew. It's a wonderful skill. Keep at it
Wow I love your dress and fabric choice you look stunning
Beautiful make. That is a very lovely style on you. Bravo.
I absolutely love this silhouette!! Really lovely job. :)
Smashingly well done!
(To put it archaicly)
Very impressed !
So lovely 🤩
Hello again
Best wishes
Such a pretty fabric. I love it.
Lovely dress, and because of its classic lines, not out of date. I can imagine Jackie Kennedy in a dress cut that way. There are at least two available solutions for the short waist. One would be a hard self-belt, if you had the fabric, about an inch in width with a self-covered square or rectangle buckle. If not, a second choice would be a black soft wide belt, leather or faux leather, with a large circle buckle and scarf flare out of the buckle on the side. Either way, dress is very nice. We wore exactly those styles in the early '60's. To dress up, we added just a little modest pearl jewelry and shawl, scarf, or short black jacket on top, with medium black heels completing the look. Extra fancy, we added a hat and gloves, in black or a contrasting solid. And, yes, a lot of times, we suffered from scratchy fabrics, mostly wool.
Very well done! Beautiful work, beautiful dress!
I just love this!
You look beautiful in that dress - very like the woman in the Graduate - Ann Bancroft , I had to look her up. Vintage but not costume - lovely.
That looks really nice on you.
Put on a nice belt and pumps and add a little clutch handbag and it would look downright elegant.
I like dresses, that can be worn both casual and fancy, personally, so this really appeals to me. Well, maybe 'fancy' isn't quite the right word... it's not a cocktail dress...but something I would feel 'well dressed' in under most circumstances.
Ooh, I like this...
Very flattering! I'm going to be looking for this pattern.
Is a really beautiful dress, the material is very nice. love it
Beautiful!
Fabulous!!
Cute dress. Well done
Looks great!
I love it!
Wow! Really suits you! And your hair and makeup is perfect for the era.
so cute!
😍 you look amazing!!!!
I love that bodice, the dress fits you so well ❤
Yay!! You're back!!
This is so lovely! I really like the skirt shape with the gathered sections to the sides.
Lovely job, try using a strip of stretchy thin fabric sewn within the seam allowance around the sleeve head. It gently moulds the sleeve head into shape before inserting
I really like watching how you do things - I think you have the perfect blend of doing for fun and doing for a good result.
Love the fabric and the finished dress!! It’s so flattering!! Great job!!
OMG I LOVE THIS! It fits you so well!
Such a lovely dress on you! If you have enough of the ribbon left you could sew it on the hem line as a design feature. xxx
Absolutely loved this - the dress suits you beautifully, and the commentary was really helpful.
I have not seen in years. Your video was so clear and well photographed, it felt like I was sewing myself! I think I can sew again! Thank you!
Beautiful! Well done!!
What a gorgeous style! It looks great on you. Well done!
Very cute. Thanks for sharing.
What a lovely sew-a-long! Beautiful details with your camera work and great explanations of the steps. ❤️
Very impressed with all the work and thought that goes into not only making the gorgeous dress but also the video. I like the detail on the waist of this dress design, it’s flattering and chic. Really enjoyed watching, thank you.
