Break a Ruler With Atmospheric Pressure!

- Dr. Tatiana Erukhimova demonstrates how atmospheric pressure can break a ruler with physics. When spreading out the newspaper on top of the ruler, Dr. Tatiana basically creates a large suction cup by preventing air from flowing underneath. When she strikes the ruler, it tries to lift up against the newspaper, but because the air can’t flow fast enough into the space between the table and the newspaper, most of it pushes down on the newspaper (and the ruler). All that weight on the ruler causes it to snap.

She's breaking the ruleRs of physics.
Haha this deserves more likes.
@@tamuphysastr Thank you 🙂
This deserves a hype squad)😱
Came from Daily Dose of Internet. This doctor has so much energy when presenting that I absolutely adore her!
We're glad to be featured again. DDoI must enjoy our stuff. 😁
@@tamuphysastr I loved your vids!
She was in Daily dose of internet? I probably missed that cause I would definitely remember her
@@liveguy1186 it was in a video called "Tire Flies Off at the Worst Time" at 1:38
that's crazy,, it's so weird how a small piece of paper can be the difference!
Yes. You can break things in a lot of new ways once you understand physics!
I think you can observe this when you're making your bed and you see how the sheet always gets lifted, domed up briefly, then slowly falls to the mattress. Imagine trying to move all of that at once in one swift movement. Now I wanna try it with a popsicle stick for fun, but it might be too short for the wood to be compromised enough to snap.
She is speaking in Italics
Yes. And we love it!😂
Италик? Хералик! Русский.

I LOVE THIS LADY!!!
We need more videos of her!
I want to binge watch her videos!!
Working on more content coming your way!
I like this lady too
I think she is Russia
Love this, she's engaging. A quick simple lesson in physics. I bet she could teach even the most boring of subjects/lessons and still grab attention. Props to her!
Татьяна, конечно, гениальна 🔥
I love your enthusiasm! I think "did I impress you?... No" will become a stable saying in our house 😂
Hahaha she cracks me up.
I love her so much, anybody who has her as a teacher is truly blessed 😭
Thank you for posting! Great energy and passion for teaching
You're very welcome. This is Dr. Tatiana on a daily basis by the way. More content coming soon.
Came here from Reddit. Subbed for more science lessons.
Welcome! Glad you're here.
We need more educators like her!
Very much so!
The atmospheric pressure is not the reason because it pushes both sides of the paper. The air viscosity is the reason.
No. Lower pressure is very low
Respectfully, I propose that the explanation given in the video could be revised to be more accurate. Air pressure (7000 lbf) IS acting on the paper as stated, but on BOTH SIDES of the paper, thus having no net effect on the paper.
A more accurate explanation for the phenomenon would be that the viscosity of the air prevents the paper from moving at high speed. The air does not readily move quickly, which then prevents the paper from moving quickly through it. The ruler alone can move through the air easily because it has less surface area moving through the air. This is alluded to in the video, but is presented alongside the other less relevant information.
Although air pressure and viscosity of the air are correlated, the static air pressure is not the reason for the ruler breaking.
This is more of a fluid dynamics phenomenon than one of static air pressure.
All that said, this professor clearly knows how to reach students (and the public) with an interesting video on physics. Her enthusiasm is more of what we need to get people interested in science.
I had only basic fluid dynamics in university so I can't guarantee anything but I pretty much thought the same.
But there’s virtually no air underneath the newspaper
Why are you a hater? Just enjoy the video. Df are you trying to prove? What can you possibly gain from this? Hater!
@@iternai3872that statement is inaccurate.
I highly suspect the effect will be exactly the same if the desktop surface was made out of wire mesh of some sort, that way there's plenty of air at both surfaces of the newspaper
Yes yes
I would pay money for this lady to be my teacher. She is amazing. I wish every teacher had this much energy. We definitely need more people like her on earth.
If all my teachers were this energetic in teaching when I was growing up i would have gotten straight As
My son and I absolutely love watching Dr. Tatiana, we need more teachers like her in our life!
I love her accent just makes things even more fun when listening I want her as my IRL teacher for sure.
Absolutely LOVE this woman… her enthusiasm is contagious! Brava!

People need to see more of Dr. Tatiana!
I didn’t have her as a prof, but many of my friends did. I’ve heard nothing but great reviews and I can see why.

I wish this method was used to teach children in my school
This is a neat demonstration! I wonder if the same effect would work with a standard sheet of paper. I could be wrong, but I don't know that the entire huge sheet of newspaper can have the effect of atmospheric pressure on the ruler before the strength of the newspaper comes into account. For example, if it were a single ply tissue that was practically see through being so thin but was the same size, I feel like the tissue would tear instead of the ruler breaking. It would still demonstrate atmospheric pressure that way though! So anyway, could the experiment have worked with a normal sheet of paper?
🌸Currently found her this video and surprised😍
Very, very cool!
For this demonstration, my primary school teacher borrowed my wooden ruler. It snapped into two. Since then, I haven't forgiven her yet.
love your accent and passion for physics
the captions lmfao "UNCONTROLLABLE BREATHING"
She's a Queen!!!
Years after I finish schooling, I finally understand what inertia is!
Why do I feel like this woman had like 12 cups of coffee before shooting this video her energy is just another level of energy and then when the ruler broke it just skyrocketed but some reason I can Vibe with it
I fricking love this teacher. 🔥🔥🤩
I love this woman’s energy omg

It flies away. Did I impress you?
No 🤣❤️ love it 🤣❤️
But at the same time i am amazed with the newspaper being able to break ruler.I mean the ruler would have gone through
From the Thumbnail, i knew it will be something interesting
Thank u so much but hope if clarifying how did you calculate the mass of the air under newspaper equil 3000kg
I want her to be my physics professor 👩🏫
Greetings mam .
you are just doing an amazing job. thanks for it
Not interested in science. I love this woman. Lol. The best.
YEAH!! *SCIENCE!!*
Words cannot describe how much I love this video and this woman. I wish my phsysics teacher would have had the same enthusiasm, keep it up!
Glad you found us. Please stay tuned.
Husband:"Honey.. why are all the rulers snapped in half? Also.. where are the funnies?"
Me: :D
(This teacher makes me inner child very happy... )
Tutti dovrebbero avere un insegnante di fisica come Lei, sono certa che anche io mi " sarei impegnata di piu' nello studio". Invece aihme, il mio professore voleva memorizzassimo le formule a memoria.
Explain all of the physics
You in Daily Dose Of Internet
Yes! He is a fan of our videos it seems. :-D
Give me whatever she's having 🤯

We must clone her at once!!
She's amazing at explaining things in a fun happy way.
I'm curious if a half sheet of newspaper work as well?
So long as the surface area of the paper is wide enough to suction to your flat surface. Sure.
