  • German East Africa (German: Deutsch-Ostafrika) (GEA) was a German colony in the African Great Lakes region, which included present-day Burundi, Rwanda, and the mainland part of Tanzania. GEA's area was 994,996 square kilometres (384,170 sq mi), which was nearly three times the area of present-day Germany, and double the territory of Germany then.
    The colony was organized when the German military was asked in the late 1880s to put down a revolt against the activities of the German East Africa Company. It ended with Imperial Germany's defeat in World War I. Ultimately, GEA was divided between Britain and Belgium and was reorganized as a mandate of the League of Nations.

    I have a book about the german colonies from 1916, found it in a garage sale... it's not quite in pieces and gothic lettering is a challenge to read, but the sense of pride you get from the writing is a look into history. Paid 5 euros for it, amazon charges 20. The man selling it clearly had no concept of history and was probably just cleaning out a house: it turned up at a stand where the vendor also had a stack of 'Signal' out in the open. You don't find those in Belgium, at least not out in the open like that when you know what they are.

    This song reminds me of the story about the Askari veterans getting their pensions in Tanzania decades after WW1, it always makes me smile. The Germans who were going to give out the pensions faced the problem that many Askari didn't have their papers anymore, so to make sure there were no frauds, they gave each Askari a broom, and told each man in German to do the manual of arms, which none of them failed to do.

    • @thorstenbohms4206
      @thorstenbohms4206 Před 6 lety +45

      Patriotic Brit
      Well, it was not aquired by conquering, like most of the Europeans got their colonies, but rather bought by private investors like Adolf Lüderitz and later taken over by the state as Schutzgebiete, or protective areas. Colonial settlements were established and much more land was bought of the Africans.
      There were at one point hostilities between the Germans and the Herero (an indigenous people). One of the starting factors was that some Africans didn‘t want to pay off their loans, because they didn‘t understand the concept of loans and thought the money was gifted to them (I don‘t spontaneously remember all the causes, would have to look it up again).
      Either way, the Herero started to rebell and killed (mostly male) German settlers and cut off body parts of soldiers. Leutwein, the commander of Deutsch-Süd-West-Afrika, wanted to settle this diplomatically, which was considered outrageous in Germany, because of what the Herero did and he was replaced with Lothar von Trotha, a man known for his ability to act decided. He fought the Herero with his small amount of troops, which was later reinforced. In the battle at the Waterberg he defeted the enemy, but was unable to eliminate their forces. These rebelling troops then fled towards a steppe, behind German territory, roughly of the size of Switzerland.
      He then said, that the Herero would no longer be considered vassals of Germany and no male prisoners would be taken. In the first part of his infamous order he ordered his troops to shoot "at" women and children as well. The second part of this order is often not mentioned, that is why it‘s so infamous, because here he explained, that he means shooting over the heads of women and children, so that they would flee and that he is sure that the German soldier will act according to his good reputation and will self explainingly not shoot women or children.
      The Herero would go to some water fountains near the steppe but were always chased away after a short amount of time so that they wouldn‘t settle there. Some people say, that the Germans were guarding all of these waterspots permenantly, which wouldn‘t even have been possible, because they were so few men there. Also some people say, that the steppe was a completely dry desert, which it was not.
      A few Hereros fled to English territories, some fled somewhere else (I don‘t know where exactly anymore) and 14,000 who weren‘t involved in crimes against Germans came back. You‘ll often see many people claiming that there were 100,000 Hereros alive before this, or something along those lines and that this was a genocide against multiple tens of thousands of Hereros, while it is the simple truth, that nobody knows, how many Hereros actually lived there, because nobody counted them (except the 14,000 who came back). Could have as well been 20,000 or 25,000 or whatever number above 14,000 that comes to your mind. Considering they were able to get water and didn‘t flee to a real desert, their chances to survive wouldn‘t have been so bad.
      Different topic: In this wonderful song here, they sing about living in German African colonies and being acompanied by Askari.
      Askari is the Arabic word for soldiers and German forces in Africa were largely made up of these Askari. There were also regular German Protestants/Catholics in these armies. The Askari were North African, Arabic and Sudanese Muslims and indigenous African pagans and sometimes Christians. As far as I know, Christians and Muslims lived peacefully alongside each other until the late German colonial age, when Islam rose its consiousness. For the most part religious conflicts occured between the monotheists and pagans, although not being open fights. In battle during WW1, they showed great discipline and loyalty, unlike the African soldiers of England and France and had a reputation of being invincible.
      That‘s all I know spontaneously, hope it helps.

    During World War II, General Lettow-Vorbeck, who held out against the British in East Africa throughout World War I, was in titlular command of the defence or Berlin, though he had no real authority. When the events portrayed in the film "Valkyrie" were being planned, British Intelligence approached him and asked if they should assist in the plot to assassinate Hitler. He replied: No. These men are Nazis. Their only purpose in eliinating Hitler is to save the Nazi regime by allying itself with the west against Russia. Unless Germany is defeated militarily and the Nazis destroyed utterly, you will have accomplished nothing.
