- Explaining who the VIPs are from Squid Game Season 1 Episode 7 “VIPS” and Season 1 Episode 9 “One Lucky Day” (2021). [Spoilers] In this video I talk in-depth about the VIPs line delivery and dialogue, explaining why it’s clunky and at times 110% certified “Cringe” by analyzing some interviews with the actors who played the VIPs. At times, I also justify their performances as well. I talk about who the VIPs are, why they watch the games and their relation to Number 1 (Oh Il-nam or The Host). By the way, Sang-woo went to SNU. I also quickly discuss Hwang Dong-hyuk talking about what will be in the next season of Squid Game, as well as him confirming season 2.

I dealt high-limit blackjack in a casino for 6 years and the VIPs are less of a caricature than people think. The corny jokes, the sexual innuendos, and the disgusting way they enjoy displaying their wealth is all accurate.
Yup, that’s what I was thinking too
I’ll disagree only because of the setting. Not that I’m in anyway a VIP, but some of my most fun times have been making dumb jokes with my friends outside of work. Like a way where you can have something you don’t have to take so seriously.
I mean I dont consider myself a VIP but with the money I make I can be arrogant at times. Its totally just a way of celebrating and nothing that you should take personally. As long as you do the work you are told I dont give a shit.
I think Jeff Bezos penis rocket showed VIPs/ billionaires are not cool. Wealthy does not mean cool. Trump had a gold toilet.
i deal in a casino too and this is true. you will hear the same stupid, corny jokes every single day. the acting wasn't bad. there are a lot of people out there who are actually like this.
That sexual proposition scene might have been one of the most nauseating moments of the show for me. Probably because it was probably the most realistic
I know, right? The overall suspense getting on your nerves as is, and then there's the possibility of a great character getting molested. Him turning the tables was SO satisfying.
Agreed
I think it was the most uncomfortable, yet funniest scene in the series😂🤣 I laughed so hard at it, *iL cHanGe yOur LifE*
@@Lubin-md4ml *digs nails into his dangly bits* Satisfied?

It's funny hearing about that because we, Russians, encounter the same thing: extremely stereotypical "Russians" in Hollywood movies. Now you know what it feels like
Or us Arabs
Same with us italians
Virtually everybody 😂
oh did I mention Indians?
in american tv shows Canadians are always shown as kind and aperently we say “a-boot” instead of “about” (not as bad as the other stereotypes tho)
The most frustrating part about the VIPs for me is they're all sitting around with these wine glasses and all I'm thinking is my God they can't drink out of those wine glasses with those masks on, they need straws! Drove me crazy 🤣
You know what makes even less sense? How the guards can aim their guns so perfectly with the Playstation masks on. We even see through No.29's eyes, and it's fucking hard to see!
@@alexvaughan1013 the masks have little holes so the guards can see, i have a mask and it haves holes its hard to notice from the outside that it has holes but i can see thru really well
Speaking of masks and drinking things, I remember in Cobra Kai S1E3 at the Halloween party. Eli/Hawk wore a surgical mask to cover his lip scar. When he drunk with a straw, instead of pulling the mask down to his chin, he pulled the bottom part up so it still covered his lip.
Oh my God....Same here 😆😆😆....Give them a straw.
How is that series please? Thank you ❤️
Other than the two women (and player 001) I don’t think any players peed that whole time.

Am I the only one who actually liked the VIPs because of the fact that they are that way? Like, I'm sure that most aren't like this, but is it really so unbelieve that a bunch of bored rich guys would act like this while watching poor people kill each other?
Yes. Yes it is.
I agree. I didn’t even realize that the fans do not like them.
Maybe the VIPs come across different in English dub? Because of the language. Idk 😂🤯
Honestly they were supposed to be vile and rotten to the core.
Whenever I hear someone speaking English in Kdramas it just sounds weird to me. Even Descendants from the Sun the American just felt out of place when he spoke. I’m starting to think it’s not completely their fault in that regard.
But in regard to being disgusting and vile, I think all of them nailed it.
I think their ethnicity is affecting your judgement, they were horrible an absolute cringe.
How is everyone ignoring the room the VIPS are in, there’s human bodies as ornaments everywhere! 😬
I thought they were mannequins lol
@@GarryWilliams555 nope lmao
Human furniture. And they definitely aren't getting payed enough for this.
The 'furniture' were actually played by real people. Standing perfectly still, naked and not cringing at the VIPs? Amazing acting talent! We should be blowing up their Instagrams!
@@alexvaughan1013 if you were replying to what I said, then human furniture literally means what you described.
As someone who's been watching kdramas for four years, let me tell you something. it's very common for foreign actors to have cringe worthy dialogues in kdramas. It's not a new a thing and that's why I don't think it was necessarily intentional from the writers of Squid Game to make the VIPS stereotypical Westerners.
I haven't watched many kdramers but I imagine that you are right in that it wasn't intentional. The only counter point is that the dialogue between the Korean characters was on the most part pretty convincing. It's more that they probably had no authentic reference for how these people talk. Probably would have been better to write very little dialogue and hardly have them say anything.
yeah i agree. i’ve always just assumed they talk so weirdly cause translations when writing the dialogue but then again when making subtitles for the korean audience, but making it easier to follow if they do understand english?? like i always just assume it’s fro their ease? idk
first time?
Why though? I just always felt it was unrealistic portrayal and immersion breaking and honestly when my wife and I watched it together it was immediately noticeable
@@Kazaam818 Don't think anyone is denying that the the dialogue in these scenes is unrealistic and cringeworthy. People are questioning more if this was intentional from the writers to stereotype them in this way or just bad writing..
15:12 Plus, a detail I realized while watching is that they represent the players with knights in the mini glass Bridge. I thought it was odd, as pawns would've been more accurate (their expandability and how pawns move on a board) but then I realized they were repsenting the players as knights because they're *horses*
Because the VIPs view them just as that -- expendable pieces and "horses to bet on"
*Pawns
The horse analogy comes full circle from episode 1 when we see Gi-hun betting on horses like a dumbass. Then in episode 9 when he wins the games, Frontman tells him the contestants are 'his horses'.
@@alexvaughan1013 ik
never thought about that because in germany we call knights "Springer" which translates to jumper and theyre jumping on the platforms
I means if they were pawns they wouldn’t rlly give them a choice
Honestly i didnt mind the VIPs i was pretty confused to see that ppl didnt like them they were there to show how disgusting rich people can be and i think it works
are you implying that “69 lol poo poo” isn’t comedically genius?
I actually think it shows how horrible poor people can be lol
@@user-uy1my1oc1h That was my issue 100%. Was just cringe to use the 69 joke twice, and to 'explain' what that joke means for the morons who didn't get it
I like their acting. They behave like moron frat bros who were born into wealth, which is what most rich people are. They are not better, more intelligent and more sophisticated than you are. They are like every other person, they just lucked in to having loads of money and loads of power. Like a child given super powers.
No, they were in the show to show how disgusting WHITE people are. That's why a TV show about a game in a racially homogenous country thousands of miles from any white people had white males as the ultimate villains, and why it painted those white men as much worse than the rich Koreans who masterminded the entire game to begin with.
Yo I hear that Sang-woo guy went to SNU. Just thought I'd let you know.

I liked that theyre jokes were dumb, and that they weren't the smartest, mostly because we tend to deify billionaires and claim they have a level of knowledge we don't.
Exactly
Most self made billionaires are extremely smart and ambitious people. However, those born into litteral billions tend to be ignorant and just a normal level of intelligent, simply because they were never required to be orherwise.
@@ThreeFontStreet I grew up around very rich people, most of them french or belgian. From experience I can say most of them acted very classy and mature. @@notanagger4861 Name one "self made" billionaire. Most billionaires we know got "small" loans of a million dollars or more to create their businesses. Elon used his families blood money to get Tesla going after being unprofitable for years. The VIPs most likely represent those born into wealth much like we face in today's current society
I think the VIPS are also supposed to represent us, the viewer. The reason is just like us, the VIPS are viewing the people suffer or "play" through all the games while relaxing and being very comfortable, enjoying drinks and snacks like many of us were when watching Squid Game. Plus while watching they frequently make meaningless comments like "why the fuck did he do that" and "wow what a shame" and also judge the players decisions. Many people have hated on characters such as Sang-Woo for their actions, forgetting the horrifying situation they're in
Yeah , As a watcher we are the same as VIP but we watch dead people in a fiction not in real life. And yeah VIPs are very realistic written characters.
@@ZyGotham64 Frontman also compared the games to horse racing. Sadly, even though many horses are put down, people in real life still enjoy betting money on horses.
hey,did you know that Sang-Woo graduated SNU business school?
First in his class!!!!
Wait, really??
Great detail, easy to miss!
Top Of His Class
No omg I didn’t but did you actually know that sang woo graduated from snu business school
You don’t like the caricatures of western billionaires? Now you have an idea of how nearly every culture feels after Hollywood is done with it.
True
Touché 😁
My biggest problem is not that they are white or western, hell there is one russian and one chinese, the problem it's that they are cartoonish in relation to everything else. Idiots like that couldn't get a thing as big as the Squid Game going for more then 1 season, they'd get busted.
No, they're just shit actors. And what do we have to do with Hollywood?
I don't mint the caricature
They're powerful billioners who whatch poor asians fighting to the death for fun
I like this position to be honest
Also can we please have a video on Ali. I never cried so much when Sang-Woo (who was 1st in his class at SNU Business school) played dirty during Marbles
I creied when the 2 girls played matbles and one lets the other win. That was so moving.
@@jceprinaw Ali getting betrayed was worse
Also noteworthy regarding the “mystery phone person”, the Frontman speaks to them in English (obviously this isn’t apparent in the English dub, but in the original Korean and other dubs he speaks In English). So it is even more unlikely it is Oh Il Nam, since when the Frontman and Il Nam speak, they speak in Korean.
Maybe it’s the Main Organizer, or the top VIP…
Yeah, the fact he always spoke to them in English (better English than the VIPs too!) made me wonder who it was every time…also I did wonder how he always managed to arrive just as the person called!
The frontman spoke English well! (Turns out the actor also worked in America) Better than his brother in fact 😅
Yes, because the Front Man mentions "the Host" on the phone, so he could not have been speaking to Il Nam then.
It's not Il-nam or one of the VIPs beside that the Frontman always speaks to them in English which implies that it is someone from outside Korea. However, as we know that the game probably not only happen in Korea (with each of the game presumably has its own host) and in some lines during the conversations like when the Frontman made sure that no trace left when the VIPs arrive which implies that it's someone in charge or a leader, I guess there's some sort of the supreme leader of the game which organizes and oversees all the games around the world while the host is only the leader on each branch of the game. But that only my theory so I hope it will be revealed in season 2. Probably this mysterious phone caller will also become the new villain in the next season of the Squid Game besides the Frontman/In-ho who presumably becomes the new host of the Korean game after Il-nam's death.
Okay, I have a theory that Sang-woo didn't actually gradualte SNU top of his class... I think he cheated his way through. There are several instances that made me think that was the case. And I think it would be very much in keeping with his character.
Considering how much EVERYONE keeps talking about it it makes sense.
No I think he prolly did graduate from his class fairly but the expectations are what weighed him down and it also makes sense since most asian mothers are like that
I feel like he’s proven to be too smart to lie about that- the rope technique, the shapes, etc
@@Mynameisdarkxxo Well, the fact that he's smart says nothing about whether he actually completed his studies properly or not. Cheating effectively and getting away with it at such a university requires a lot of inteligence and resourcefulness in itself.

Can you please do an ‘Explained Video’ on the Doctor from squid games. I find him one of the most interesting characters in the series. He’s the only one that was partially on both sides, how did he get connected with the guards to harvest other players organs? No one has done an analysis on him before and I think he’s one of the most unique characters in the show! :) love your videos.
what do you mean ? anyone can figure out that some of the guards need money so they give the doctor a special treatment, those guards who keep the doctor aren't even special and just regular young scums.
My first theory on the v.i.p.s were that...
The V.I.P.S were original squid game winners from the 80s and 90s.
Also a winner season would be interesting
Am I the only person on Earth who wasn’t bothered by the VIPs performances?
yeah i thought it was quite good tbh, really showed the difference between the childish elites and the actual players
I wasn't bothered by their performance either. To be fair, I thought some of their word choices were a little odd. However, I got the sense that they were meant to be caricatures of billionaires, hence the ludicrous behavior. Hate to say it, but ultra wealthy people tend to not care what you think about them if you're a lower status. Plus, I got the sense that they were all buddies, so they felt comfortable being lewd around each other.
I guess you could look at them as a mockery of western billionaires, given that most of them are white, American- sounding. I didn't get that sense, though.
The situation get even more abstract if you watch it on a different language than Korean or English, in spanish they sound fine as it is
I wasn't. The audio mixing felt slightly off like a dub, but other than that, it was fine.
I just thought the acting was to display their arrogance. Many wealthy folks have no class and can be ignorant to the point they look dumb.
This channel has the best takes on Squid Game. If this show were an AP English class in high school I'd come here instead of reading the damn book 👏👏
Thank you so much Damian Wayne™!
@@BryceEdwardBrown Thank YOU!🔥
I feel bad for the actors since it's literally not entirely their fault their acting was horrible. In an interview with one of them, one of the actors said that they were only given a script and told to act without any context or backstory to their characters. They were forced to yell their lines because they were so far from each other on top of the masks they were wearing which made it hard to deliver lines. Another reason is that english lines were written by non natives which made the lines unnatural. A lot of them adlibbed lines because of how strange the dialogue sounded. Korean editors didn't know what takes to use, and so wrong versions of the lines made it to the final cut. The fact that they worked with a mostly non-english speaking crew and granted western actors are limited there so lower quality of acting is to be expected, led to the dumpsterfire that is their acting in the show.
Yeah, that's litteraly everything we just heard in this video so no need to repeat his every word in your comment
@@wioilol who hurt u, don’t need to get so triggered 😂😂
I didn’t mind their acting as much as I minded them explaining the exact things we were already watching. Too much exposition from them. But it was kinda nice finally seeing Americans be the bad guy for once in a movie
For once in a movie, since when did this series feel like a film. lol
That is very interesting and sad, to hear the director lost some of his teeth, from stress. I heard hair loss, weight loss, etc. But teeth?? The poor fella.
As a person who had studied acting and has a diploma in media studies. I'd say the V.I.P.s were conducted correctly. The stereotype of rich people being dumb with a childish like sense of humour was portrayed and the way they performed was so we laugh at the V.I.P.s characters.
As someone with no acting experience whatsoever, it’s blatantly obvious that they made the vips unlikeable on purpose.don’t have to be smart to work that out ffs
@prince where do you live bro and where did you learn to be grammatically incorrect?
@@wilabanodeniro9780 and that's the opinion of someone who has no media, technology, acting or creative media experience.
@prince well I don't want to work in a cinema so I haven't gone down that path. I think you mean actress, director, editor or screenwriter because you don't need a diploma to work in a Cinema, whereas those others you'll need the experience. But once I got my diploma in Media Studies; college basically said "You're on your own. Get a job." British Collages are only bothered if their students pass because that means more money for the tutors and teachers
A lot of pagan pantheons had their gods each associated with a different animal. Do you think that might be part of the reason all the VIPs are wearing animal masks?
That’s a great theory. I thought it had something to do with emblems on Western flags or like how past political cartoons represented countries as certain animals
That fits so much
@@jozieash5016 According to an article I saw on the Internet, several animals represent different things in Korea. Deer are considered spiritual/sacred animals, so the deer guy could be some kind of religious leader. Siberian tiger is the national animal of South Korea, so tiger might be a politician or something. And the article didn’t expand further on the other dudes.

Why hide if you're not doing anything illegal? I mean it would probably lead to good publicity for them.
guys bohemian grove, the acting of the VIPS is pretty accurate and correct.
There are just some things we aren't meant to know, like where Sang-woo went to school or how many years Phil Leotardo spent in the can.
Russian VIP: Yes we have our own games. Russian Roulette is one of them.
And its a death game...
Apart from that dirty pig, i found the V.I.P's to be very interesting tbh. And their English was supposed to be that bad, they are all from different country's (The V.I.P's). They where also accurate very rich people. Sadly.
Their English is bad because a Korean wrote the script for them. The actors suggested that they ad-lib their lines, but the Korean scriptwriters declined their suggestion. So hence we get these odd sounding lines from them.
I partly wonder if the screenwriters wanted to make the scene as understandable as possible to their Korean audience, by keeping the English lines short and and simple, and putting a lot of extra dead air in the scene (giving audiences more time to process and translate in their heads). That I can forgive, this was intended primarily for a Korean audience after all.
I can’t forgive the line delivery though, particularly the actors with American accents. It sounds like amateur theater acting. If they’re in the second season I really hope they take the criticism from the audiences and work on that. It made those scenes nearly unwatchable for me. I groaned every time we cut back to them.
Agree. These elites all must from all over the world, they all speak English as a second language in-lore.

They are too dumb for that
Yea

Maybe
I think they were fine, they're _supposed_ to be callous scumbags. They have their unimaginable wealth to open doors for them, it makes sense that they don't have well-developed, winning personalities. The 69 jokes went a bit over the top, and like the video says some of the takes and line reads used probably were not the best, but I don't think that a perfect version of their scenes would have been much different.
I really like their masks but for the characters , I'm neutral about them.

I always thought of the games as Olympic type games where every game is in a different country and the ones that happened to be in Korea are always the best shows
I love the VIPs masks!! I love all the masks in this show but the VIPs was super dope!!! I love your videos!
Me too , I really like VIPs masks.
especially the even more extravagant owl mask w the extra colors for the beak area.
I have a feeling that the VIPs will also most likely return in the Squid Game season 2 and have a larger role where it will eventually reveals the identity of the VIPs and how they became the guests of the game.
Also regarding the mysterious phone caller, some fans theorize that there's another rank even above the host in the game organization since we know that the game probably not only happen in Korea (with each of the game presumably has its own host) and seen in several clues during the conversations like the fact that the Frontman always speaks to the phone caller in English, when he informed them that there will be no disturbance when the VIPs arrive, and when he mentioned the host (Il-nam) to the phone caller which infers that it's not Il-nam or one of the VIPs so according to the theory, it is some sort of the supreme leader of the game who organizes and oversees all the games around the world while the hosts are only in charge of each branch of the game.
Probably this mysterious phone caller will also become the new villain in the next season with a foreign actor/actress who will portray this character like the VIPs.
A good video. I had not thought about how difficult it is, for an English speak to act in a Korean program.
Awesome
in season 2 they should reveal that the old man have a son and that he is now in charge of the games in korea
Do a deep dive in to the games them self, like why they chose red light green light or the old glass panel game.

Being there in person, and watching something on a screen IS a very different experience. Try going to the Opera or watching a horse race
Honestly I kindof liked the VIPs. (Okay, maybe "like" is a strong word, but I understood their purpose in the story) And it makes sense why they're weird-- they're billionaires attending an undeground killing game. Ofc they're gonna be weird and immature.
Come on, please.
3:58 there is no "sir". That's the English dubbed version. In the original, the Front Man speaks in English on those scenes, they dubbed it anyways for consistency, I don't know why the fuck they changed the line though
In the german version he calls him professor.... (admiring his knowledge and education...)
I actually liked how the VIPs were portrayed because that’s how I view their humor would be. They’re pretentious, snobby, and act as if they’re above everyone else. Which is exactly what extremely rich people do
When the tiger did that hand gesture 🤌 I didn’t know if it meant: go away or come here
Am I the only person who felt like this was a darker version of the old movie Rat Race? When catering to the VIPs in that movie, they bet on everything, even the ridiculous. At one point when on a plane, the pilot deliberately causes the plane to experience turbulence and flies erratically so they could bet on which of them would vomit first. I can totally see the Squid Game VIPs doing stuff like that just on their way to the island.
The viewing room the vips were in was so beautiful I could hardly focus on the dialogue in their scenes
DO MORE PLS!!!!!!!!!!
I was the 2000th like on the video
Western culture not liking the characters that are supposed to represent themselves is the funniest part of this whole thing
I took the VIPs part of the "Good Old Boy's Club" where misogyny is rampant
i think you bring up a good poiunt with the "loss in translation with the vips there was something sinmilar going on in shin godzillawith kayoko patterson, definitely some uncanny valley stuff!
This Horror Show Shows Who We Are
A student of mine told me about a new show called “Squid Game.” It is a South Korean “thriller series,” as they call it, which has become a pop culture phenomenon and is the no. 1 show in more than 90 countries. The show presents several hundred people who are all in great financial debt and in dire emotional states. The producers pit them against each other, even if they are very close, and make them hate each other. The winner takes millions of dollars, and the others are killed. This show wouldn’t be so horrifying if it didn’t portray our true nature. The very fact that we watch such a show enthusiastically is proof that underneath the “civilized” façade, our nature is as the show depicts.
It works like a magnet. We love to watch the struggle between good and evil, as long as we are safe from the consequences of the battle. The thing is that in this show, there is no good; there is only evil.
Indeed, humans are the worst being in reality. What makes us so uniquely evil is the fact that we explicitly want to harm others. We do not want to eat others because we will starve unless we do so; we want to see them suffer! We derive pleasure from others’ pain, and derive the most pleasure when we are the ones inflicting it.
We often say that reality is like a jungle, where the strong eat the weak. However, in the jungle, the strong do not want to destroy the weak; they want to eat. Once they are full, they want to sleep and play, and not kill or hurt for fun. In the human jungle, we do not want to eat other people; we want to see them hurting! This is why the natural jungle thrives without any laws while the human jungle, which we mistakenly refer to as “civilization,” is disintegrating despite the laws that strive to limit our barbarity.
If we had any hopes of finding goodness in human nature, “Squid Game,” and mainly its popularity, proves that we have nothing to hope for when it comes to human nature. If we can create such shows, and if they can be so popular, then we can do such horrors in real life.
The only possible good that can come out of such a show is the realization that it is not fantasy, but an authentic depiction of who we are. Maybe if we realize this, we will be willing to do something about changing ourselves.
The current trend is to dull our awareness of the human horror show we live in by making cannabis available and legal. Indeed, the more we learn about human nature, the more we realize that perhaps it is better to numb ourselves through life until it’s over.
For now, we’re cheering at the sight of other people suffering, much like people used to cheer at the sight of poor men fighting against lions in ancient Rome. Only if we realize that it is not okay to be like that, our minds might open to other options. If such a diabolical program can be the no. 1 show in more than 90 countries, it means that the entire world is immersed in unhinged viciousness.
There is a solution, but it is demanding and must encompass the entire world if it is to succeed. To change who we are, we must initiate a worldwide educational process where such programs are forbidden and pro-human-connection programs are produced and aired. Even if they are not popular, at first, we cannot allow ourselves to be exposed to the violent poison and culture of narcissism that we consume today. They may be sweet, but they are lethal.
If people don’t want to watch shows about human connection, they can put aside their media devices and simply talk to one another. This will already be a major improvement to the current situation.
It may not sound like fun, but what is the option? To live out the “Squid Game.” Besides, after some practice, we will discover that connection and care are far more rewarding and pleasant than destruction and cruelty, and do not carry the negative side effect that is our current culture...
Actually I got the feeling that the Japanese VIP had no clue what his white VIP friends were saying
he had no reaction to the 69 joke and needed clarification to what it meant, presumably because he didn't understand it
Correct
001s mask was so badass i wish he wouldve been with the vips in one shot
the spongebob cutaway killed me
can you do one about what happened to the VIP that was found in the VIP room? he wasn't seen in the next episode, but I wonder what they would have done with him? any thoughts??
They likely killed him since he had earlier been exposed by the undercover cop.
Plus the Front Man would have be pretty mad after learning that that VIP had tried to sexually assault his own brother.
@@nicholaslawrence6926 There's no way they could have killed him, he and the others have financed the project. Also, they were from the American ELITE
@@nicholaslawrence6926agreed
The VIP with the eagle mask was the only one I liked lol. He’s a pretty underrated character. The rest of the VIPs were cringy AF.
A friend of mine who is clueless about squid game: Who is this guy named Sang-woo?
Me, the geek but the silly kid: SNU BUSINESS SCHOOL VIBES
Yay my idea worked
Each VIP could be the Hosts from the other games.
One fact you clearly missed while dissecting the VIPs is NONE of them went to SNU. I bet you don’t even know which character in the show graduated top of his class from SNU Business school?!
My man still making squid game content
Well there is some thing I wanted to high light which alot of people missed every where
At the end the show the real host didn't receive vips and said its more enjoyable playing the game Instead of watching it with VIPs and didn't went to receive vips and send apology but number 1 -001 was already eliminated in a episode before vips arrived 😀 😉 👍
Hi Bryce. :)
Hey Jay, thanks for watching!
