This 3D animation shows how a Buchholz relay works. The 3D animation explains clearly each of the three main faults a transformer is likely to have and how the Buchholz relay triggers either an alarm and/or shutdown depending upon the severity of the fault.
The 3D model in this video is based upon a design at Mibos.com.

âśď¸Introduction
We discuss the Buchholz relayâs main components and how they protect the electrical transformer. Compared to gas actuated relays, a Buchholz relay has three functions, but a gas actuated relay has only two.
Buchholz relays are only fitted on liquid insulated electrical transformers and are designed to operate with the following electrical faults:
Fault 1
Large Electrical Fault
Fast and Large Amount of Gas Accumulation
Result: Transformer Alarms and Trips (shutdown)
Fault 2
Minor Electrical Fault
Slow Gas Accumulation
Result: Transformer Alarms
Fault 3
Low Insulating Liquid Level
Insulating Liquid Level Drops
Result: Transformer Alarms and Trips

You prolly dont give a shit but does someone know of a tool to log back into an instagram account..?
I somehow forgot the login password. I would love any tips you can offer me
@Roman Mark Instablaster ;)
@Cody Kyler thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff now.
Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
The explanation is clear, and the 3D animations are beautiful! This channel is a gold mine. Thank you so much. Please do more EE videos.
The best explanation of bucholz relays on youtube. Congratulations!

Terrific video! @6:28 audio calls out the lower float dropping when it's the upper one that is dropping.
very clear explanation with animations
Well done thank you for the detailed info about components.
This is amazing. Thank you for this explanation
Thank you for taking your time to make this video; you explained it well, and I found it helpful. You said nothing about a mercury switch. Is this what you meant by the contact?
Many thanks for your efforts
Best explanation I have watch.. Congrats sir..nice one!
Thanks a lot. Very clear explanation.
Very helpful explanation
Hi Sir,
Thanks for video
Could you please share Dry type transformer Annual maintenance and what kind of tests need to taken
Great video, thank you!
Baffle plate works with liquid whose movement is created by displacement by large/quick pocket of gas in the main tank. You should also give more information regarding internal workings before presenting scenarios. Lower contacts, as far as I noticed, were never mentioned. Thank you.
Absolute a1 explanation and graphics!
Best explanation on bucholz relay

I'm interested in the difference between the Buchholtz relay and other forms of sudden pressure relays. Is there no other difference (in principle) apart from where the two are installed?
wow, this is amzing keep it up!
@@savree-3d sure did..
Best of luck đ¸
Good guide
Thanks!
Very good
Excellent...
Does the transformer manufacturer provide the bucholtz for the transformer? If I have to choose a bucholtz relay myself for letâs say a 100 MVA what are the most important parameters when selecting one?
thanks a lot
Great video, do you by chance have one of these good videos for Sudden Pressure devices, not of the buchholtz type but for the Nitrogen space or Oil , ?
Thx keep it up
Thank you

Hi there, great video! It really helped me out a lot. One thing I donât understand is how the bottom float drops when level is low without the gas. Apologies if I have missed it in the video but just canât get my head around that bit, thanks in advance :)
Without insulating oil, how can the bottom float thing can float?
Does gas gets analyzed too or just oil? is DGA applied to both samples?
Dissolved gas analysis test is done on transformer oil to check for dissolved gases such as carbondioxide, methane, etc

Would you care to tell me why there are two bleed valves on top of the Buchholz relay's chamber? Even though one of the valves does nt exactly look like a release valve..
@@savree-3d How to test the baffle ?
@@savree-3d would it not reset automatically or would you have to pull the float up to reset it?
Not bad... not bad... BUT!
You should show each animations a few times, as it was a loop. It would be useful to see the processes from more angles, with different zooms.
It would be very helpful to see the gas flowing if it had a color.
You should have mentioned the mercury switches and their output signals on the top of the Buchholz!
Buchholz relays fitted to electric locomotives as well.
