They tend to go into a trance-like state when they chirp. Such a weird experience for the Human.
My guinea pigs used to do it and we took so long to figure out it was the pigs and not the birds!

Alarm piggy? Ok, yes, sounds to me like the call an alarm "lookout" squirrel will make.
My Guinea pigs only do it at night so it tells me that they are scared of the dark or like to wake me up in the middle of the night.
That's the reason we always have a little light burning in the room the pigs are. One of them is scared of darkness. Same problem with the dog, so pigs and dog have to sleep in the same, comfy room with their little light😂has been working for years.

Incredible to hear the chirping and thank you for capturing it on camera. You mentioned that Zelda and Tutu have been fighting - Wilby seems such a gentle, kindly little soul and we know he likes Zelda, so maybe he was feeling overwhelmed and didn't know how to deal with the situation of Zelda and her mother fighting. Wilby is a peace loving piggy and I for one, am completely charmed by him!❤
One of my guinea pigs used to chirp occasionally. The first time I heard her chirping I was shocked; I had no idea that guinea pigs are capable of producing such sounds!
My whole family ran into the room in the middle of the night when a new pig did that for the first time 🤣luckily we found out she's scared of darkness. So she got a little light and doesn't wake up everybody anymore 👌
My pig chirped like that one time, and my rabbit started stamping at the same time. I couldn’t figure out what was bothering them. I finally turned off all the noise in the house and just listened, and heard a rustling noise up in the attic. A bird had gotten in through a broken window and was stuck between the inside and outside pieces of glass. We were finally able to let it out, my rabbit and little guinea pig saved its life since we never would have heard it otherwise.
When the video started with chirping, one of my girls immediately ran across her cage.

Back when I had my 3 guinea pigs, one of them was a chirper. Not all the time, but it happened about once every six months or so. Sometimes I think he got scared of the dark even with the night light in the room, but if he heard movement, he'd quickly be fine. But one time he chirped as a form of protest. He heard a grocery bag rustle in the next room and assumed it was time for dinner (which it wasn't). When I did not bring him veggies or his nightly pellets, he started chirping at me. I had to pause my on-line work (ironically at that moment my boss was watching me for an evaluation) and feed him, and he was perfectly fine afterwards. A bit embarrassing, to say the least. Ironically, I think he started chirping less after I had to separate him from his cage mate, so it's possible that some of his chirping was stress caused by tensions with his cage mate.

I used to have a skinny pig named Star, who would often chirp when I was not in the room. I don't know what I was that scared her so often, but when I came into the room, called her by name, and petted or picked her up, she would stop. Eventually, all I had to do was call out to her to reassure her of my presence and protection to stop the chirping.
I can agree with the reasons for chirping. One of our boys was chirping on the day one of girls passed away and he picked up on the loss of our girl and our distress at losing her. We were all crying and he was clearly very stressed about it all. He has never done it since. We felt so bad for him. We knew chirping is a highly unusual and stressed behaviour. Poor Wilby! 💕
My Sarabi once started chirping in the middle of the night. She probably had a bad dream, as she was in a hammock when I lit the light. I managed to calm her down with her favourite snack
I have some chrirpers, well I'm down to just 2 who chirp but only when they sense danger.
A few days ago we had some really severe thunderstorm and possible tornado warnings... Matteo was chirping for at least 2 minutes straight. stopped for a while, and then started again a few hours later
I got to hear this first hand a couple of years ago from one of my boys. The owner of the guinea pig rescue I volunteer with says she hears it all of the time. My boy was not stressed, was very happy, and was with his mate. It just seems to be with intense emotions. Good or bad.

Glad Wilby is OK. At first, I thought it was a reaction to the summer heat.
My piggy, Johnny, literally played dead and went stiff a week after I got him and he heard the smoke alarm go off the first time. I thought I gave him a heart attack at first until I shook him and he flipped over and started walking around.
We've had guinea pigs for 25+ years and for most of that time, we only heard chirping extremely rarely, in the middle of the night. It would stop when we walked in to check on them.
However, when a recently adopted pig gave birth, it became much more frequent! Three out of four babies, now grown, are extremely dramatic, and two will chirp from time to time. One will occasionally chirp after a sibling is slightly mean to her, and the other learned very young that this is a sound I will quickly respond to pretty consistently. She chirps simply to summon me because she wants attention. Most often she's in a particular spot (what has been dubbed the chirping hut), will watch me as I come over and then get in position for the exact kind of petting she likes. Occasionally that's not enough and she wants a hug. Otherwise she might just want me to hang out for a while. To be clear, she is definitely not scared when she does this. She's a clingly little diva.
The rest of the little family also knows these two are just being dramatic, and they pay it no mind.
Once, though, one of our older ladies spent an entire afternoon being obnoxious until her cagemate, who normally absolutely adores her, was so fed up that she nipped her. And the piggy who is not normally so obnoxious actually chirped about it, because her cagemate is supposed to dote on her! Waaaah!

My Pablo used to do this all the time ❤ he passed this year and I miss hearing him. His little ears would flap with each chirp 😂
my skinny pig does this when there is usually a mosquito in the room at night, and have to put him under my shirt while I sleep to get him to relax. Before anyone says something, no I'm not going to hurt him as I've done this countless times for the past year. I am able to be aware of my surroundings in my sleep so I know not to move in any way that would disturb him.
My cockatiel perked up and looked around warily and gave a few 'worry beeps' at the sound. Actually it sounds a lot like 'baby cockatiels being fed by mom'
I startled my Pip. He was going around and around his cage, trying to find the opening of his house.. He found it and started chirping. That is the only incident of chirping that I have witnessed. I've had 22 piggies over the years.

I had two that used to do it. It always seem to happen when they were frustrated about hat I never could figure out except that they were ticked at the herd.
My guinea pigs once chirped super loud at 5 am on a school day. We looked it up and found out it normally wasn't good. My dad though there was probably a spider near their cage. We never found out but we think the guinea pigs got super mad at eachother, it wasn't physical cause we checked them for wounds. This was 2 years ago and we still don't know what happened
I had learned that chirping was an alarm call. Like humans screaming (or if we want to warn a large population, through alarm bells, horns or sirens) or even the various noises from other animals like ostriches, they produce an incredibly deep Wooo-Woo-Woooooo sound as a warning. like a deep owl hoot.
Never heard that chirping noise, but it makes sense that Wilby, as guinea pig herd leader, would be making important announcements to the herd as the most likely reason. Kind of like an alert or maybe an all clear? Obviously guinea pigs grow up quickly. Do you think that Zelda is going through pre-teens or teenage behavior issues?
I heard my first ever guinea pig of 8 years (now passed on, rest in peace Fishstick 💔) do this and I was always so scared something was wrong! Because of how long ago this was now, I'm unsure of what might have made her chirp. My new trio of piggies have not chirped yet

I've also only heard this twice in 12+ years of having piggies. Both times from the same pig. His name is Rev and he lives with his brother Rico. I currently have 11 piggies and that sound immediately froze all of them! The first time, I was so shocked (it's almost an otherworldly sound in your home) and just did my best to assure him everything was okay. Second time, a tanker jet had flown low over our house and shook it - I'd be scared too if I were him. He raises the alarm when something is truly off in his world and I just try to make sure everyone feels safe afterwards.
My pigs got nervous when they heard the beginning of this video! I wouldn't have guessed that guinea pigs make that sound. It sounds a lot like birds. Now I'll know.

Thanks for this information. I hope to never hear it, just as I hope to never hear a rabbit scream. Luckily my Jupi is the most mellow and laid back piggies, traveled internationally twice, lives in Belize with massive thunderstorms and sleeps thru it all....but the crinkle of a bag or knife on the chopping board and he is alert! Food motivated almostcas much as Fitz!
one of my five piggies chirps around every 2 months, while or before her fertile days. She did that since she was born. The other pig chirped like 2-3 times in a life mostly at nights when we changed the place of their cage and when they were young like 12 to 18 months and after that she stopped. I managed to record her multiple times as she often stays in middle of the cage not hidden at all and starts to sing.

I can tell you that the two weeks leading up to my 7 year old boars passing his companion, my 1 year old boar would chirp in the middle of the night every night. Of course we didn't know or correlate until after our Elvis passed as he just passed unexpectedly in his sleep overnight. The first couple days of living alone Sigurd still did the alarm call/chirp. We're still in the process of trying to find him a new companion as he doesn't get along with our other two boars when they are in the same space, but the can interact through the fence between their cages.

Its rare because this is like when a human learns to whistle on their own. Its not a normal GP sound, but when they figure out how to do it, they enjoy what they accomplish and keep doing it. They may not remember how they did it and never do it again
I always thought, it's a sound to alert the whole herd, that someting is wrong and it sounds like a bird, so potential predators nearby won't get attracted, because they think, there is just some bird chirping somewhere.
i've had guinea pigs off and on since i was a tween, out of all of those i've had Two who chirped. they were both the dominant pigs in the herd years apart. one was the day i brought the older one home, the next was a few years later when they had lost a herdmate. i felt kind of like it was like someone standing on the roof top and just yelling about what a weird day they'd had

That noise is so unusual it's like a bird song they usually do that when they're very nervous and it's very rare
My senior pig chirped once a few weeks after his cage mate died. It was not as loud and clear as Wilby's but he was older so a bit hoarse. He was clearly distressed as there had been a new pig arrive, living in the cage next door that he'd had a fight with when I tried an introduction and I'd also tried an introduction with a second pig, so the poor boy was having a lot going on!

Had a pig that chirped in the middle of the night. She was always alone on the bottom level when it happened. So my guess was that she fell asleep, woke up alone and panicked. She always panicked when she was alone anyway.
Maybe, it's been the heat fraying on nerves, or possibly a bad dream the piggy had that it was trying to make sense of . Perhaps, it was the toddler unexpected like a jack in the box game that the piggy's didn't like. That was so cute when you picked up Lumi- I wish I could hold her- but it was nice to see you hold her too. Zelda must be in her "teen years" and is getting on Tutu's nerves. There's a bit of frayed nerves happening globally too - so it's no wonder the piggies can just sense the stress of the times- perhaps.
When my piggy Kaj was dying, my Peanut totally panicked and started chirping. So sad..😭
Yes, I think my senior pig Boris did this too. It was a few weeks after his cage mate died and a new young pig moved next door. At first I thought he was trying to wheek as I had never heard him wheek, but he was not excited rather he was clearly distressed.

One of my pigs did it at 3am once waking me up lol. I was super concerned since it seemed like he was freaked out, though I did not know what it was yet. so I wrapped him in a blanket and he nuzzled right into my neck and calmed down quickly. He got treats too. Well both pigs did. 😊
Omg I’ve never heard this sound before! My piggy is gonna be seven next March and I’ve never heard it! It’s always surprising to hear a new piggy noise since they don’t really make a lot of sound other than wheeking and purring 😭

I heard this in the middle of the night once, i was genuinely terrified thinking a bird or something else was in ths house, i recorded it and went to sleep, woke up and found out it was the guinea pigs. They've done it before, but i genuinely forgot they made that sound.
Wow, she was really going wild. I heard my piggies let out ONE chirp, that was it and the only time she ever did it. My other girl was a real chatterbox, always talking but she never chirped
My daughter and I have two that do this, mother and son, they did it when someone tried to break into our home and once when a sever storm was happening.
My piggy only ever did it once. A stray cat came into our flat, at night. It was quickly sorted and piggy calmed. She had a roof on her house.

I think this is our little piggy's version of crying. Guinea pigs feel a lot, as we all know they do indeed get crabby to each other sometimes. They can't shed tears like we can but we do make a bit of a distinct sound. If you were a guinea pig, this might be what your crying sounded like.

Wir hatten über 30 Jahre Meerschweinchen, aber so gezwitschert wie Wilby hat keines davon. Aber unser erstes Schweinchen Eumel hat mit geschlossenen Augen geschlafen und wenn er intensiv träumte, wie wild die Augen gerollt und auch gezuckt. Wenn er so dann aufwachte, war er erst mal völlig desorientiert und brauchte dringend ein Salatblättchen zur Nervenberuhigung. 😅
Funnily enough the head of our herd started chirping out of nowhere the other day. Only maybe the second time I've heard it. Never did figure out why, but after a snack she was fine.
I had a piggy that chirped fairly regularly. It seemed thar it was usually at night. I thought it was pretty cool. I thought he was hearing or smelling outside critters (raccon, ground hog).

Ive had 2 of my guinea pigs do this. First was Dixie. His brother has no idea what was going on. I went in and nothing was going on. My guinea pig Declan did it a few years later. I again went in and saw nothing. But I'm sure it was something to him. ❤️

Chirping in Guinea Pigs is a sign of distress or someone is going to die. Kona and Suba's Tiny was doing it and the next day Kona died

One of my guinea pigs is very vocal and will often chirp. It’s quite difficult to put a reason to it though. The other day she was running around pop corning and then suddenly stopped and started chirping. Her cage mate was eating hay (nowhere near her) and didn’t even react. No clue what set her off.
My Cinnabon was chirping after our elder pig, Oreo, passed recently :( Cinnabon has a lot of anxiety and Oreo was his rock.
