  • I recently bought a nice copy of Adam Bomb from the first series of Garbage Pail Kids, and I got interested in the history of the trading cards. Here's that story.

I had a bunch of them incuding some in this video. I rember them being called 'Garbage Gang Kids' in Australia. They were stickers which I think I stuck on things I probably no longer have but I still have the backs with the joke licences, etc in a box somewhere.

Myself and my 3 siblings had some. We went to Catholic school and most of our family was pretty conservative and when our one uncle saw them he offered to buy them all off of us if we promised to not buy any more. I feel like I remember him giving my older brother and I $20 each and my younger brother and sister $10 each. At the time I remember thinking I was rich and while I was already buying baseball cards that $20 definitely went towards more baseball cards, so Topps ended up getting the money anyway.

me and my dad talked about this months ago. When these came out I coaxed him into buying me a ton of packs of these things, I was 6-7 yrs old and I loved them. but when he saw them and saw what was on them, he got mad and threw them away. and that was the end of it. What he didn't know is that I later retrieved them from the trash. they didn't make it much longer though. I ruined them and stuck the stickers on things and they got destroyed with the rest of my stuff from back then. I remember having several of the Adam bomb ones, I liked it because it featured the mushroom cloud which I thought looked cool.

I remember in 1986, a friend and I saw the animated "Transformers The Movie" in a theater and went back to his dad's truck, but he wasn't there so we walked over to the mall attached to the cinema and bought Garbage Pail Kids from a Woolworth's shop. A few hours later my friend's dad was come into the mall looking for us and was furious. It turns out he was asleep in the truck, we just didn't see him. But we had GPK cards so it was worth getting in trouble.

This was so good! Been waiting for this vid a while. Thanks for putting it all together for us. I remember GPK cards being THE THING to have and trade at my 1985 YMCA summer camp in Olympia WA. Hard core nostalgia from those first early series. All the kids got the joke back then and nobody took it serious. That was the point! Parents didn’t get it and we did. My original GPK cards disappeared a long time ago. But all the amazing memories are still there. Bought a mostly series 1-3 collection on eBay years ago. Happy to have them. I’m still looking for that Adam Bomb. Hope you continue to showcase and share more informative content just like this GPK vid. Maybe even bring on a guest to discuss the vintage ones. Looking forward to seeing your Adam Bomb grade response vid.

Me and my brothers had thousands of GPK's in the 80's when I was a kid then we sold them all off around 2007 on Ebay, so around the time of the pandemic (2020) I was looking around and told my brothers do you realize of all those GPK's we had we don't even have 1 card now, it didn't seem right, like almost a crime we didn't own any anymore.... I knew I had to get them back, so since 2020 I've been on Ebay buying lot after lot of them and a few of the new ones too....plus this time around I actually own about half of the 1st series which we never had back in the day..

I was born in 79 so was very young but, the garbage pail kids was the first cool thing I remember growing up. The problem was, as soon as they were cool they bloody vanished. I remember really enjoying the movie too. The sticker I remember most was the one where he’s shaving, but he’s not shaving his beard, he was literally shaving his face off. That always stuck with me, can’t remember his name though. Names I remember were, armpit britt, Johnny one note and Ali gater. My memories are very hazy.

I do agree with your statement about nostalgia being in the 80’s & 90’s; I would like to add that being a kid in the 00’s there is a shared nostalgia for children at the time. But I think that nostalgia does end around a certain time because kids of today are all watching different things mainly influencers. Great video!

Thanks Danielle! My youngest is a 2000s kid (born in 2004) and nostalgia for that age is like iCarly and Dino Dan. It got wild in the teens though and kids need the internet to find people who share their same interests.

GPK was my shit back in the day. It was fun because i thought the Cabbage Patch Kids were ugly and the craze over them was so silly. Those cards were cool in 2nd Grade. But by the time 3rd Grade came around, i didn't care much. I had a ton of them and my mom threw them away with my old original Transformers when i moved out. I'd love to get a complete series 1 and 2 just for nostalgia to put with some of my old video games. But the price they want for them is stupid. Not paying $1K for some 80's trading cards! LOL.
