Dodgers were the first team that scouted him when he was in HS and couldn’t sign with them due to NL DH, there’s a history
Makes the new deal even better.
@@kdevinturner8778it's so fitting he ends up a dodger
Signing Ohtani is a business move. The ROI will be far more than 700m for the dodgers over the next decade. He is not just a baseball player, but a global sports icon.
I think it'll wear off in a couple years honestly idk
@@deantotheizzona he’s the Jordan of Japan he’s gonna be around for awhile
Your mom was my business move
baseball has a luxury tax,,,,,,,,,,,,
@davidfhth6842 Most of the contract is deferred which will help with that. Do some research before being a village idi*t
Not many players in baseball have been able to do what this man has done. You’re getting two players in one if his elbow comes back to 100% from the surgery.
Time will tell, hoping to see him be as dominating again.
None have. Not since Ruth.
Really? Since when did Ruth pitch after he switched to RF fulltime?@@CorbCorbin
Not since the heady days of Tungsten Arm O' Dpyle!
As a Ms fan I wonder how julio feels about his contract now. His is 12 years at 209 million. Acuna must feel like he got robbed at 8/100 lol. The game needs a cap or there will be more lockout and strike seasons
I remember when the Blue Jays also made a run For Freddy Freeman and now Ohtani 😁
As a former Mariner fan, a mid-market, highly profitable team that gaslights its fans into believing Seattle is a small market, I have a slightly different take on small market teams like the Orioles etc. Every once in a while, like every 10 years or so, small market teams get it right by drafting and developing well, and they go to the playoffs. But the competitive window closes quickly as developed players get expensive. Meanwhile, the Yankees, Dodgers, Mets and occasionally a few other teams like the Rangers, can just open the checkbook, and have a shot that very next season. It's not a guarantee of winning, but it does create instant competitiveness. Sorry, but it's a crappy system.
Good take. Why former mariners fan?
@@albmntjr because the Mariners are a mid market, highly profitable team that gaslights its fans into believing Seattle is a small market.. LOL
🔥🇨🇦😁
I agree 1000%. Excellent take.
At least the same team doesnt win it all every year
A certain team in LA is going to have a serious case of buyer's remorse in a few years. Scott Boras strikes again!
Boras? Ohtani's agent is Nez Balelo from CAA. Why mention Boras?
Shohei once said he was going to join Dodgers when he graduated Highschool but he ended up playing for Japanese professional baseball that resulted in increasing baseball fans in Japan…. His focus always has been passion rather than money. He has made so many choices over money for years and that is one of many reasons he is loved and respected so much by Japanese.
That's a laugh. The man just cashed in at 70 million per year.
@@TheFergyme and his focus is still on winning. His contract deferral is crazy.
🤩🤩 Im in the midwest...going to more games next year!
Now the angels have money to get some good pitching
Friedman is actually obsessed with Ohtani ; prophecy has been fulfilled
Honestly I feel bad for the jays.. after yesterday I thought for sure ohtani was going to the jays. They need him more than we do but can’t complain!🎉😂
As a Jays fan this is just, once again, proof that superstars never choose to come to Toronto. It doesn’t matter that sport. Just another offseason of disappointment.
Blame Canada 🇨🇦! 😂😂😂😂
@@uncleb7821true they should have pitched in lol
I would have respected him more if he chose the Jays. With the Jays you become THE guy. It's kind of like the Heat when Lebron, Wade and Bosh were there.
The Jays were totally played.
Trust me Ken,Blue Jays fans will never forgive or forget Morosi’s misleading reporting
The real blame should go to MLB for sabotaging the Jays from getting Ohtani. They didn't want their golden goose to fly to Canada.
Give the Blue Jays Yamamoto. Feel bad for that country.
I was pulling for the Blue Jays. The AL east battles with the Yankees wouldve been epic. But the battle against Padres, Dbacks, Braves, Phillies should be great too.
@@jleiz6624why? They have hockey, beautiful women, and healthcare. Canada is fine. Go Blue!

Freeman and Betts who do fuck all when it matters. Some of the best regular season players ever.
We loved the idea 😂🇨🇦🇺🇸
The timing of the announcement makes perfect sense. Ohtani Dodgers jerseys will be flying off the racks just before Christmas (although an Ohtani Cubs jersey would be a funny gag gift for a diehard fan I know).
It was ohtani's decision not the dodgers.
With two elbow surgeries this trade seems more like a gamble than a sure thing.
You are out of loop then
Oakland total salary last year 44million. Dodgers sign 1 player, 700million 😳😳😳 If they put a Cap in tho, those small teams likely wouldn't hit the floor. Oakland makes 200mil a year as a Team. ⚾ has gotten crazy. 💯💯💯
Dodgers get $8.5 billion in TV money over 25 years and started in 2014. Know how much 8.5 billion is divided by 25? $340 million a year.
baseball always been the limitless league. Remember the Yankees
Well then it's a great move for the MLB to move them to Las Vegas!
@@ghosttownbound Something like this will happen in Vegas.
Marlins' 2012 payroll was $107 million.
2013 payroll was $25 million.
Fisher will do the same when the A's he spent a lot of money on don't win or get injured in 2028. Everyone knows who isn't a Nevada politician that that is precisely what he'll do and he won't have Oakland tv money to take up the slack.
Why they think being in Vegas will change Fisher's Modus Operandi is way beyond me. Do they believe what he says he'll do? What did MLB promise them behind closed doors because I thought they were more savvy than to believe someone like Fisher.
They have almost 20 years of a history of being in the bottom 25% of payroll and with massive roster turnovers to show what kind of owner Fisher is. Biggest free agent contract handed out by Fisher was two contracts given to Coco Crisp that totaled 53 million for 6 years when he was traded. He has been like that even with winning seasons, he dumps players before they get expensive and back to last place. Fisher isn't going to change because he changed cities.
I'm just so glad and grateful that it will be the Dodgers that suffer down the line with that massive contract. 700 million really? 500-550 ok but 700? For a damaged player with his 2nd surgery on his DOMINANT arm before age 30? His 2 way playing at an elite level has a very very limited shelf life. I'd say 3-5 years at best and that's being generous. Then what you have a injury prone getting older 70 million DH? Sure its all exciting now for fans but the hype will come back to earth oneday. Look at Trout as a prime example. People labeled him the next Mantle and now you barely hear about him. And his contract is puny compared to this monster of a contract.. he's already showed plenty of signs his 2 way playing wont last. I mean to a smart GM, this contract should SCREAM danger. I knew he'd get paid but sheesh. Again, just happy its the Dodgers. On another note 📝 the people that are saying this is a "business" decision, the projected earnings from him money wise are way less then what they gave him. Dont believe me? Maybe do your research.
You think they gave 700 million because they think he’ll be this good for all 10 years? The whole purpose of this is to lock in an all-time hall of famer in his prime for the next 4-5 years, anything after that is an ADDITION not the expectation. The money is pennies for an org like the dodgers. The team’s revenue in 1 season will be orders of magnitude above what they’re paying him for 10 years. Also, it makes the dodgers a prime location for top tier talent in the NPB. Fans play checkers, successful organizations play chess.
@andrewchang7194 oh yeah there really playing chess alright 🤫 idc what organization your in, 700 million is no drop in the bucket for NO TEAM. You really think the Dodgers "needed" Shohei to attract talent my guy? There like the Yankees, they always attract big names. Sure it helps some for the short term but now they just have 1 highly overpaid injury prone 2 surgery international player.. they need pitchers. Bats wasnt really a problem for them. He's not pitching for at least another year and when he does, how long until he rips that injured arm of his? Sure his bat will add depth to the roster but when my man has to give up pitching, with all them other mega contracts on the books, who are they gonna get Mr chess? They would have to take on nearly a half billion dollar yearly salary cap to do anything of meaning. There now paying "one" guy 70 million a year. In the game of baseball, one guy will never get the job done as baseball is a team sport. From a financial standpoint, they will surely sell jerseys, ads and merchandise from over hyped fans like yourself but for how long? Then what? You got a injury prone past his prime 70 million dollar DH? I can tell your a short term thinker and not a long term one. Yeah any smart GM would 100% pass on this. I would get in this day in age paying dude 500 or 550 but 700? No I'm good.
WOW ..... UNBELIEVABLE !
Now we go!!!..... bleed DODGER BLUE. Thank you.
I don’t think he was ever going to Toronto. Maybe the deferred $$ is the amount the Dodgers paid over the Blue Jays’ offer so he can say he took a higher bid to go where he always wanted to go anyway
Rosenthal is right when he says this is good for the game. This deal could influence elite, young athletes to choose baseball over football and basketball.
Exactly. Lots of Nisei in LA which means 10,000 extra every time he plays.
it wont
I disagree, Ohtani is an outlier. Once the season starts people will slowly forget about him especially if he doesn't produce. They will then eventually turn on him because he can't win alone. He only cares about the money . winning 😂 ,ok.
1000% deserved it Sho... Dodger for the win..❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉
I feel sorry for angel fans because they should've traded him last season and would have got alot more. Hope this is not a big waste of money. Need to win chip soon
Ohtani played with the Angels for 5 years for a minimum wage
Dodgers still getting bounced in the first
@MadSkillsUniversity no your correct, trout should get a chance on a playoff team too
The should trade Trout and get what they can. The Angels are going nowhere now or anytime soon.
@@TaboozaAs a Dodgers fan I should be pissed about your comment, but part of me feels you are right.
The reason why I feel you are right is because Dave Roberts is still the manager.
Maybe if anything now Ohtani could have a hand to get him fired.
I can see a situation down the road in the playoffs, Ohtani has a no-hitter or shutout going after 6 innings, then Roberts will do the typical Roberts thing, remove a dominant Ohtani and the bullpen will blow it.
Perhaps that will piss Ohtani so much that demands ownership make a change.
Wonder when a team will offer a contract with a share (%) of the team instead of cash. Might it be a way around the cap/luxury tax measurement? (It's not direct cash compensation.)
Congrats to Shohei and the Dodgers!
How does any one deserve 700 million dollars? Lol that's insane.
How does Elon musk deserve to be worth $247 Billion? Because he work for it! So did ohtani.
Scott Braun did not flinch for the first minute.
Obviously, the media neither watches the games nor places any value to the statistics. Add Othani to the 2023 Dodgers...replace no player-allow the Dodgers to use two DH's...and Atlanta STILL out-hits, out-homers and outscores LA. I am not disrespecting the Dodgers in any way, shape or form...they have a great team...but the media pays no attention to the fact that the Braves have assembled one of the top 2 or 3 offenses in the history of the game.
Agree there is a good chance things are changing before eyes 🇨🇦😁
I’m a Yankee fan glad he didn’t go to Toronto!

The bar for Soto was just raised! Boras has a woody! Lol
Baseball continues to go down the shit abyss
He deserves it. He is a game changer. It just stinks Cubs didn’t get him. Still a fan watching one of the greatest baseball players I have ever seen
Thank God the cubs didn’t do such an insane contract
I'm a #yankees fan... I'm happy we got #soto now the #yankees have to offer a close if not the same amount of a contract for 10 years... Good luck to the #dodgers
Watch he will be a DH for most of this contract
My son is definitely playing baseball
SALARY CAP This is insanity.
Let's GO Ohtani!!! Time to get Ohtani merchandise. You have a whole continent behind you.
You're not just paying for production, you're paying for marketability. The Angels got a lot more ad dollars from Japan *AND* so did the other 29 teams when Shohei was playing in their stadium.
Japan is like 99% elderly people
Another fine decision by Moreno pays off with nothing in return.
unreal that they never seriously considered trading him
Moreno is on suicide watch.
Morena never believed in pitching. This is why they are losing organization . Sell the team Artie. Go back to something you know about
Maybe saving money after losing your superstar the Angels have to concentrate on pitching.
@@1sabryn- Angels Farm system is in shambles, where are they getting pitching from ?
700 million for one player, this is getting ridiculous! This is not good for the game.
Only for the best player ever...I dont think this is something that will happen often...
@@QueenChaeyoung5 one guy making an average of 70 million in one year? Other teams cant compete with this. People will still pay to watch him if he made 20 to 25 million a year. Just like a washed up Adam Wainwright making around 20 million last year when he pitched like a 2 million dollar player. Baseball salaries have been out of control for far too long and the product on the field is degrading as well.
$700 million is ridiculous
Not if you're Ohtani's Super Agent. 😅
It is ridiculous when is it going to end 70 million a year people live paycheck to paycheck in this country to me it is a criminal an everyday person it would take 70 life times to make 70 million dollars. We make these guys out to be gods there something wrong with this country help the needy not over pay someone who can hit a ball throw a pass or sink a basket they don't care about the fans just themselves.
Wow, I never thought a team would still give Shohei 700 mil after his injury. I thought it would be around 500 mil was the right number. Trout's contract seems to be tiny compared to Shohei's. lol
How well has Trout’s contract been for the Angels’ championship aspirations?
That's why you're not running things. The marketing potential alone the ad and merch revenue, the ticket sales, broadcast rights, all of baseball wins. Even if Ohtani lasts 5 years.
the dogers are desperate!
@@rickdeckard9810 I don't know about that. The deal could become the best or worst, it all depends on how much Shohei can stay healthy and contribute. If he starts sucking, you think those ads and merch revenue will be as high? But I do hope he will shine and win at least a Championship before he retires. It's his second surgery that's concerning.
@@rickdeckard9810he wont make them that much money my man. Maybe your math is a little off. Now a contract of 500 million sure but 700? Unless the unicorn 🦄 blows gold bars out his butt I doubt it very highly man.
Hey Hal, thanks for getting Soto, but if you want to WIN a WS, you’re gonna need more ammo to beat the LAD……The big three they have of Betts, Freeman, and Ohtani, trumps Soto and Judge…….you’re a stud hitter behind…..that could be fixed by signing BELLINGER, but I wouldn’t wait because he’s gonna go real soon…..he’s the perfect fit in that he can cover CF until Dominguez gets back, take over 1st base when Rizzo’s gone, play any OF spot, and DH, not to mention another lefty bat with thump stretching out the lineup……please, he’s the perfect fit, don’t stop now if you’re SERIOUS about going all in.
LAD got their ass handed down to them. Lol
Pirate fans aren’t renewing their season tickets in large numbers.
Look at NYM. Paying a lot of money is no guarantee that you will be the best in the world. This is not a sport where adding one great player will ensure a championship. Looks like they need to add some good pitchers.
If what you said about Ohtani being all about the deferrals is true he will forever be enshrined as a dodger legend in fans eyes no matter what happens
Sadly, there are too many "fans" complaining about this contract, often without even knowing about the deferral that Ohtani himself offered. There's all this yapping about ticket prices (which were already too high for Dodger games), how Ohtani's contract prevents signing needed pitchers, etc. It's annoying to have so many negative fans looking for something to complain about instead of celebrating this massive addition of a transcendent athlete.
Do the deferrals limit their luxury tax? Seems like bs to smaller market teams
Yes it helps with their tax situation
How I would still like to know how. It’s always been aav. Scherzer had deferrals but was still $30m agains the cap
Depending on the actual lifetime of the payout the value of this contract isn't as valuable as the current 700 million report. Inflation will devalue the contract past the contract term of 10 years. As Ken said, factoring the additional years of deferral this contract value will be around current value of 500 million when the contract is fully paid out.
ridiclous homer takes. he will be making close to 90 million a year after deffering!! the contract is only 10 years!!!
@@davidfhth6842 define deferral and breakdown how the deferral makes his annual 90 mil.
Thats what investments are for
This contract of 10 years 700 million is historic on paper but the true value of it isn't historic. 10 years is the time of service Shohei will provide. But the payment is made beyond 10 years. Which, as one knows of inflation. $20 now is worth a lot less than $20 10 years ago and even much less 20 or 30 years ago. The question is did Shohei offer this contract flexibility to other teams.
One report I read states MLBPA values the contract at $437,830,563. The MLB valuation is $460M. Widely varying numbers.
MLB Needs a salary cap and floor!!!
That will never happen in a league that is not owned by the league the team owners own mlb plus we are a shared revenue league
You cant do that with baseball for multiple reasons some teams can't afford to speed 200-300 mill payroll even with shared revenue they have voted down salary cap over 20 times. Players and owners have to agree to one and they never have and probably never will
the 700m is not just for his hitting and pitching guys. its also for all the biz money that he will generate which will excel that number for sure
Its predicted to return about 35% of that money, not 100%
We get it. You like ohtani
These salaries make the cost of going to games unaffordable for the common fan. Also, needing numerous streaming services to watch your team so that MLB can squeeze every last dime out of their loyal fans is really disappointing. MLB is doing the opposite of trying to grow the game and all these reporters saying how great this is because it’s a global news story need to get out of their bubble. This is good for you, who are profiting off the clicks. This is not good for fans.
The Dodgers competed against themselves. No other team came close to 70 mil per year.
they'll still profit off this

Let's see what this does for the other free agent pitchers ! Yamamoto must be smiling !
Yamamoto hasn't pitched in MLB. Boras will start out at 700 mil now. Yamamoto will sign for 600 mil. After the Yankees and Mets go neck and neck. In the end the Yankees will outbid everyone and highly overpay for Yamamoto. The Yankees won't be outbid. They will pay a massive load and go as high as they need to. In the end it might be close to 700 mil.
🤔... Had to be a conspiracy theorist but seems awfully funny that the Yankees and Dodgers are getting the two best players only after a very boring rangers Diamondbacks world series will at least to the other 28 teams in baseball

Wouldn't that frost the Yankees and Mets !
The deferred money makes me think that’s the plan and I wouldn’t put it past the dodgers to shell out big money to land Yamamoto. It was just a thought and decided to put it out into the universe hahaha. Let’s see how it plays out.
Demise of baseball.

@@ernestohernandez9316 TBH, I do agree that 700m is excessive for any player even for someone like Ohtani and he doesn't even need it with all the sponsorships. However OP is delusional to classify MVP level performance as just mediocre when this is 1 person doing both "at the same time"
So you are a starting pitcher vs the dodgers. The first three batters are MVP’s.. wow

Wasn't he making 70mil last year with the Angels? 30 million in salary and 40 million from endorsements.
Now that he's in a big market you can only imagine how much he'll be making from endorsements. Not surprised he's okay with the deferrals.
No question these types of contracts in baseball are bad for the game in reality nobody in sports is worth this type of money I always been a big fan of baseball but seriously $700 millions to play baseball well good for Ohtani and bad for the fans because they’re the ones that are going to pay his salary.
Nobody should have went over 500 million. Just let him sit there...eventually he'd have to take it or go back to Japan. Future star free agents are now going to try and get 50 million + per season...which is fuckin' ridiculous. This is why AA is the best GM. Team friendly contracts...
Scary to think if Ohtani was between 24-27 years old the contract could likely have been 1 Billion...insane
*With endorsements from Porsche, Rolex and so on. He’s already a billionaire. I think it’s 500m for endorsement the last time I check on Forbes.
This is the baseball equivalent of Lebron going to the heat. The pressure will be on for them to win more than ever, I sure hope they get bounced round 1 again.
Imagine if Ohtani did a press conference like LeBron did lmao 😂
With this pitching staff they will
I sometimes don’t understand other fans half of these baseball fans are not even real fans they just think they are but they are not also other fans from other teams are mad like wth 🤦♂️ wow
Does Ohtani know that Robert’s will be managing the Dodgers?
I'm sure that fans of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence will fill Dodger Stadium.
Telling you - if the Dodgers get kicked out of the 1st round again next year. ... No pressure Ohtani.
I think there's way more cons than pros with this signing amount. It kills the smaller market teams even more and not because you can't win with a low payroll, but it's harder to sell tickets when you can't ever land any bigger names. Also, other players will be asking for insane amounts next year and say "Well Ohtani got this" even though he's by far the most marketable player and the Dodgers will likely make back 400-500 million of that contract from that alone. Ohtani is a unicorn but I think other players seeing that 700 mill will cause some issues.
while i do agree with your 'salary inflation issue', I am not so sure about the casual effect with Ohtani's dodgers contract. I doubt mlb players/agents can come to the negotiation table with that "well ohtani got this" argument, without the owner/GM laughing them out the door with the "well, can you pitch and bat, and bring in usd350m revenue from japan+asia?". I would think the finger should be pointing to the Rendons, Machados and the alikes, for causing other players and their agents to ask for ever increasing salaries. "Well, Rendon got this, and barely played 🤣".
There not going to make 500 million on that contract, they will make the same the t.v contract done already and they sold out alot last year so you have to sell out every game just to make a little money. Clothes make money but four to five hundred million I would be surprised.
If the narrative for Ohtani was to win, how in the hell did the Blue Jays enter the fold?
Someone in Toronto saw a private jet, and they thought it was him. Turns out it was a guy from Shark Tank. He made a few tweets about it.
