    As a former Mariner fan, a mid-market, highly profitable team that gaslights its fans into believing Seattle is a small market, I have a slightly different take on small market teams like the Orioles etc. Every once in a while, like every 10 years or so, small market teams get it right by drafting and developing well, and they go to the playoffs. But the competitive window closes quickly as developed players get expensive. Meanwhile, the Yankees, Dodgers, Mets and occasionally a few other teams like the Rangers, can just open the checkbook, and have a shot that very next season. It's not a guarantee of winning, but it does create instant competitiveness. Sorry, but it's a crappy system.

      @@ghosttownbound Something like this will happen in Vegas.
      Marlins' 2012 payroll was $107 million.
      2013 payroll was $25 million.
      Fisher will do the same when the A's he spent a lot of money on don't win or get injured in 2028. Everyone knows who isn't a Nevada politician that that is precisely what he'll do and he won't have Oakland tv money to take up the slack.
      Why they think being in Vegas will change Fisher's Modus Operandi is way beyond me. Do they believe what he says he'll do? What did MLB promise them behind closed doors because I thought they were more savvy than to believe someone like Fisher.
      They have almost 20 years of a history of being in the bottom 25% of payroll and with massive roster turnovers to show what kind of owner Fisher is. Biggest free agent contract handed out by Fisher was two contracts given to Coco Crisp that totaled 53 million for 6 years when he was traded. He has been like that even with winning seasons, he dumps players before they get expensive and back to last place. Fisher isn't going to change because he changed cities.

  • @junehodge8027
    @junehodge8027 Před 7 měsíci +2

    I'm just so glad and grateful that it will be the Dodgers that suffer down the line with that massive contract. 700 million really? 500-550 ok but 700? For a damaged player with his 2nd surgery on his DOMINANT arm before age 30? His 2 way playing at an elite level has a very very limited shelf life. I'd say 3-5 years at best and that's being generous. Then what you have a injury prone getting older 70 million DH? Sure its all exciting now for fans but the hype will come back to earth oneday. Look at Trout as a prime example. People labeled him the next Mantle and now you barely hear about him. And his contract is puny compared to this monster of a contract.. he's already showed plenty of signs his 2 way playing wont last. I mean to a smart GM, this contract should SCREAM danger. I knew he'd get paid but sheesh. Again, just happy its the Dodgers. On another note 📝 the people that are saying this is a "business" decision, the projected earnings from him money wise are way less then what they gave him. Dont believe me? Maybe do your research.

    • @andrewchang7194
      @andrewchang7194 Před 7 měsíci

      You think they gave 700 million because they think he’ll be this good for all 10 years? The whole purpose of this is to lock in an all-time hall of famer in his prime for the next 4-5 years, anything after that is an ADDITION not the expectation. The money is pennies for an org like the dodgers. The team’s revenue in 1 season will be orders of magnitude above what they’re paying him for 10 years. Also, it makes the dodgers a prime location for top tier talent in the NPB. Fans play checkers, successful organizations play chess.

    • @junehodge8027
      @junehodge8027 Před 7 měsíci

      @andrewchang7194 oh yeah there really playing chess alright 🤫 idc what organization your in, 700 million is no drop in the bucket for NO TEAM. You really think the Dodgers "needed" Shohei to attract talent my guy? There like the Yankees, they always attract big names. Sure it helps some for the short term but now they just have 1 highly overpaid injury prone 2 surgery international player.. they need pitchers. Bats wasnt really a problem for them. He's not pitching for at least another year and when he does, how long until he rips that injured arm of his? Sure his bat will add depth to the roster but when my man has to give up pitching, with all them other mega contracts on the books, who are they gonna get Mr chess? They would have to take on nearly a half billion dollar yearly salary cap to do anything of meaning. There now paying "one" guy 70 million a year. In the game of baseball, one guy will never get the job done as baseball is a team sport. From a financial standpoint, they will surely sell jerseys, ads and merchandise from over hyped fans like yourself but for how long? Then what? You got a injury prone past his prime 70 million dollar DH? I can tell your a short term thinker and not a long term one. Yeah any smart GM would 100% pass on this. I would get in this day in age paying dude 500 or 550 but 700? No I'm good.

      I can see a situation down the road in the playoffs, Ohtani has a no-hitter or shutout going after 6 innings, then Roberts will do the typical Roberts thing, remove a dominant Ohtani and the bullpen will blow it.
      Perhaps that will piss Ohtani so much that demands ownership make a change.

    Hey Hal, thanks for getting Soto, but if you want to WIN a WS, you’re gonna need more ammo to beat the LAD……The big three they have of Betts, Freeman, and Ohtani, trumps Soto and Judge…….you’re a stud hitter behind…..that could be fixed by signing BELLINGER, but I wouldn’t wait because he’s gonna go real soon…..he’s the perfect fit in that he can cover CF until Dominguez gets back, take over 1st base when Rizzo’s gone, play any OF spot, and DH, not to mention another lefty bat with thump stretching out the lineup……please, he’s the perfect fit, don’t stop now if you’re SERIOUS about going all in.

      Sadly, there are too many "fans" complaining about this contract, often without even knowing about the deferral that Ohtani himself offered. There's all this yapping about ticket prices (which were already too high for Dodger games), how Ohtani's contract prevents signing needed pitchers, etc. It's annoying to have so many negative fans looking for something to complain about instead of celebrating this massive addition of a transcendent athlete.

    Depending on the actual lifetime of the payout the value of this contract isn't as valuable as the current 700 million report. Inflation will devalue the contract past the contract term of 10 years. As Ken said, factoring the additional years of deferral this contract value will be around current value of 500 million when the contract is fully paid out.

Which, as one knows of inflation. $20 now is worth a lot less than $20 10 years ago and even much less 20 or 30 years ago. The question is did Shohei offer this contract flexibility to other teams.

It kills the smaller market teams even more and not because you can't win with a low payroll, but it's harder to sell tickets when you can't ever land any bigger names. Also, other players will be asking for insane amounts next year and say "Well Ohtani got this" even though he's by far the most marketable player and the Dodgers will likely make back 400-500 million of that contract from that alone. Ohtani is a unicorn but I think other players seeing that 700 mill will cause some issues.
