- Welcome to part 1 of a 5 part series about getting started as a designer. In this video, we cover learning design. Since there are so many facets of design I focus on 5 tips on what to learn and how to learn more effectively.
Remember to Subscribe goo.gl/6vCw64
This series is geared towards people who have an interest in becoming professional designers but don’t know where to start. In this series, I’ll be covering topics such as:
1. What to Learn
2. Projects to Make
3. Portfolio Building
4. Landing Clients
5. Behavior
This series is great if you are interested in design and is not limited to a certain facet of design. Whether you are interested in graphic design, web design, product design, logo design, etc... I cover basic steps that are distilled down in the hopes of helping people make less of the mistakes I made during the process.
My goal in making this series is to answer the flood of questions I’ve received by email and twitter asking to get started? What projects to pursue, how to find clients, what to do if you have never had a paying client etc... I really hope you enjoy the series and watch it all the way through. I really tried to answer as many of those foundation questions as I could.

instaBlaster.
I really like this guy he gives good advice without being cocky or preachy I can tell he has a real passion for what he does thank you sir
Just want to say thanks! A few weeks ago I started to learn about Graphic Design but I didn't know where to begin. This video outlined the basics yet vital steps to begin the journey and motivated me even more to be a Graphic Designer. I always thought I could not be a one because I am not that great at drawing but I came to the realization that I don't have to be a Picasso to be able to share my ideas/messages through art. It will be hard since I do work full time but if it's easy then it ain't fun, also I'm a bit lucky that I work for a tech company where I get to interact with graphic designers and get some guidance and feedback. Again, thanks Sir!
I'M SO GLAD I FOUND YOU, BLESS YOUR SOUL!! Your content is incredible and so easy to understand. I wish you had so many more subscribers because you definitely deserve it
We should share his videos can do lil marketing for that young artist
I found you when working on web development stuff, and today after a portfolio was rejected I decided I needed more design help so back to CZcams I went. This series popped up on a search and I no joke just took two pages of notes. Thanks for being out there, being real, and not being pretentious. Absolutely one of the most underrated channels on this platform.
Wow that is so humbling, thanks so much
Very Underrated Channel. It's priceless!
Thanks so much 👍
Yeah i think so. It is great
I too am a visual learner and note taker. I find it really easy to digest content when I take notes on a topic, then immediately watch a video or two that covers that topic. Rinse and repeat.
Thank you, this helps alot, I'm on graphic design school but i lost my motivation, now I'm trying to get more into design and this video kicked my motivation back in.
Awesome!
I just feel the same! Thank you so much for being as you are Jesse and share it with us!
I haven`t got this amount of motivation from anyone in a long time.
Watching the first 2 minutes made me subscribe to you. Great tips and content all around. Can't wait to watch everything you upload, man!

I second this, made a trip to my local library and picked up my first book!

Yes! Get it, Jayden! You’ve got this!
Jesse, these free resources are awesome. Alaka'i is starting photography and also learning design from me and from online courses. You should make an in-depth course on all of these and post on teachable so you can make some passive income. You really know your stuff and you're really good at teaching in a way that makes people like my ADHD son, pay attention.
+Make Time Now thanks that might be something I’ll think about in the future, right now I just really want to be a blessing to people and I have been having fun creating content that people enjoy. Say hi to Alaka’i for me.
great talk bro...Wow... amazing content... great advice... Its definitely a big encouragement for me... I'm just diving into the world of graphic design and I needed stuff like this to get me going

Thanks Jesse :)
That’s amazing!!
Love your content! any specific books, blog posts, videos? that you recommend to learn the theory of design?
Very good video cos the film expresses that you have experience in design and you went through all this. You have the good intention to help others also emphasise the aspect of learn, learn, learn which is the most important on any field if you are serious. Thank You man! Legit! Peace!

Really great video mate. Very helpful. I like what you said....'the designs are going to be awful to start off'....it's a learning curve. Keep making videos!

@Materia Prima Right now mostly sketching and drawing!.. And youtube videos to!
Awesome. Thanks for sharing.
Excellent information Jesse.. i like your quote on get out of perfection mentality and get into production mentality..
very good video! I have a marketing background and I am working on starting up my own business as a graphic designer a marketing support but finding hard to create and let go of my portfolio as I think is not good enough. I have created my website but did not publish it yet because I am also thinking it is not good enough. this is only delaying my start as a freelancer or taking opportunities by thinking my work is not good enough. It was very good to hear about getting out of the perfection line and into the production line. I am looking forward to the next episode. Thanks , Daniela
So glad to hear that Daniela, the best thing for you to do is start putting yourself out there and see what happens. The worst that can happen is you will get critical feedback that you can apply asap 👍🏼
Thanks for your useful advices 🙌
Nothing to say your awesome talking style. It's very helpful for me. Thank you so much for your great episode.

You're breathtaking
i like to see this vid my dear take care💖
Hello Jesse. This is a really informative video, so thank you. I just wanted to ask you, of course starting out you want to do projects for friends and many small projects. I've heard that if you do "fake" projects for "imaginary" companies, recruiters can tell that you weren't working with a client. I was wondering what your thoughts were on that
I say "Good work is good work" and it doesn't matter if it's concept work or not.
Oh my goodness, this is so helpful!! Thank you!
Thank YOU, Hannah!
Love the video so much, I just started learning design but i have no clue about the theories of design, is there an e-book you can recommend to me please.
Hey, @Jesse Showalter, you said that you will provide some link about "Learn to learn", a blog which tells what type of learner you're.
Great advice. Very helpful. Any recommendation on books or materials to get started on.. much appreciated 😅
This was so concise! but also not light in information, this was a pretty great guide. Thank you!
I want to focus on illustration but I'm just starting, I'm 21 so I feel like I'm a little late (couldn't figure out what I wanted to study sooner...), but, well, you gotta start somewhere. :)
I didn't start until I was 25, you gotta a head start on me
I guess thats true, thanks dude
awesome information I'm really thankful💙
Thank you so so much for your support, stoked you enjoyed the video!
I really needed this. Thanks dude. :)
You are so welcome
Hey jassi ✌️.thanks for such a inspirational video .☺️
I am comfortable with code but struggling with design and luckly I discover your video .it's going to help me a lot .
👍
It's really feel good when you said { get out of perfection mentality }☺️
That’s so cool to hear. You can do it, just gotta stay focused👍🏼
Hi. These are wonderful videos. Giving me a bit more confidence to transition into graphic design. I have a small fashion accessories brand but am looking to get additional work in graphic design as well. I am predominantly self-taught and have not really worked in long term official capacity other than getting a few commissions here and there.
I've designed all my own graphic material for my own brand including textile design. Would you say that is okay to include in a portfolio when applying for jobs. I've also created designs for friends and family but somehow don't think it's okay to include that....?? thoughts??
Hey Jesse, thank you for making this video! It's so very helpful. I have a question I'm hoping you/someone can answer:
I need to learn the theory of design. Can you tell me some top graphic design artists people study in design school? And/or recommend some specific books or online resources to study the theory and learn the vocabulary? Thank you!
Learn this book and it will teach you so much theory on design amzn.to/2S8L2bH

Glad to hear it
WOW!! This video was the fuel to ignite my learning! I've been working on my own design page coming very soon-CRBakerDesigns.com- and was starting to believe that I couldn't make it because of my limited knowledge...then I found Jesse's video from a sea of others and he gave me the KEYS to my own SUCCESS! GOD BLESS YOU, JESSE!!!
Yeah!! I’m so stoked for your journey!! Got make rad things!!
Very good advice
Soo, I couldn't apply art school ,I wasn't ready for exams, I simply didn't pass, and I don't quite understand why even now , my score wasn't bad , but I love drawing and art and everything , and my dream was to become an animator or graphic designer ,
Your video gave me hope that without that school I can become someone useful in the future, thank you .
Btw I am 15 years old . And English is not my mother language .
Sounds like your doing great to me. To even have a handle if your passion is huge at your age. Work hard, do what you love, be willing to roll with the punches, and learn from everything 🤘🏻🔥🔥
