Nikolai Tsiskaridze was born in Tbilisi, Georgia, in 1973. He began his studies at the Tbilisi ballet School in 1984 and was invited in 1987 to continue his education at the Bolshoi Ballet Academy of Moscow. This graceful, refined, diligent and dedicated young student continued to perfect his professional skills throughout his school years. A unique combination of natural abilities such as flexibility, musicality, charisma and superlative lyrical expressiveness distinguished the young dancer as a rare talent, and in 1992 he graduated at the top of his class, having studied under the renowned pedagogue Professor Peter Pestov. Upon graduation, Mr. Tsiskaridze was invited to join the legendary Bolshoi Ballet, where he earned a reputation for his nobility, stage presence and perfect technique. At the Bolshoi, he was trained with such outstanding ballet professionals as Galina Ulanova, Marina Semionova, Yuriy Grigorovich, Nikolay Fadeichev and Vladimir Vasiliev. Now a principal dancer of the Bolshoi Ballet Mr. Tsiskaridze performs virtually its entire repertoire, including such ballets as the "The Nutcracker", "Swan Lake", "The Sleeping Beauty", "La Sylphide", "Giselle", "La Bayadere", "Raymonda", "Les Sylphides", "Pharaonapos;s Daughter", "Le Spectre de la Rose", "Sheherazade", "Symphony in C", "The Legend of Love" and etc. While dancing at the Bolshoi, Mr. Tsiskaridze continued his education at the Moscow Choreographic institute, and in 1996 he was awarded a diploma with the classification of first-rank soloist, as well as teaching credentials.

Люблю слушать Николая Цискаридзе, когда его не прерывают, не задают одни и те же вопросы. Ему нужна только слушающая и понимающая аудитория. Цискаридзе хорош в танце и чрезвычайно интересен в рассказе. Особое обаяние!

It is clear to me that he is a brilliant man, with an avid mind, that cannot stand mediocrity. These people tend to bother others, without having any negative thoughts. They are perceived as invasive or "standing out". It is a burden to carry, but he cannot choose to be somebody ele, he has to stick to himself. All respect to him, he is an exceptional dancer, tutor and visionary!

Perfectly said Simona... you hit the bulls eye; He is definitely not a simpleton, he is knowledgeable about art, theater, literature, he is a lawyer specializing in employment law. Very intelligent, wise and educated man.I know that burden of being myself and telling as it is, not patting anyone on the back in pretense.. it pushes people away, makes them feel incompetent and it would be so much better if they tried to learn from him instead. I can;t let the day pass without watching him dance and listening to him talk (I understand Russian). Many in his place wouldn;t make it but he is so strong and self reliant, that is how his mother brought him up. He is amazing

Every time i watch his interview iam appreciate his honesty, wisdom and openness. He often talks about his shortcomings and at the same time emphasizes his dignity. He is self-critical. But where he is really master and good, he does not hesitate to talk about it. When TV shows rehearsals, where he helps his students, he is often very harsh and rude. I would be offended, but this is the key to the success of his students. He motivates them. He is extremely unusual. Legend of world ballet. Galina Ulanova, Marina Semionova, Nikolay Tsiskaridze...

It's my pleasure Peter, he is my ballet idol, a talent you don't see anymore.. he has it all, grace, poise, incredible stage presence, classical dance as well as modern dance skills, acting ability, incredible emotional expression. precision, incredible use of his arms and head, he can dance anything, jt watched him in Golden Age, he was amazing. He is doing amazing job at Vaganova, I watch all gradation shows, Polish Ball, Paquita, Fairy Doll etc.. they all looked like professional dancers. Everything he touches turned into gold. He has brilliant mind, he is a walking art, opera, ballet and literature encyclopedia and he is a lawyer. The way he was treated by Bolshoy is a total shame, only because he is outspoken and truthful and got uncomfortable for corrupted management. I adore him, I love black sheep, unique, extraordinary people like him. But today being a black sheep makes you awfully lonely. If you are on Facebook, come to my group Only For Serious Ballet Lovers.
I feature him almost exclusively . I am lucky to understand Russian and listen to all his interviews and programs.

What an enlightening video. To get an idea of Pestov's greatness as a teacher, one does not need to look farther from Tsiskaridze's class. Gennadi Saveliev went on to become a soloist at the American Ballet Theater; he is one of the founders of the famous and prestigious ballet competition, Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP). Dimitri Kulev is the founder of Dmitri Kulev Classical Ballet Academy. One of his most famous students is Kaylee Quinn. And of course, Tsiskaridze himself, a principal at Bolshoi and now the rector of the Vaganova Ballet Academy.

No doubt this man is an artist, and very honest in his approach to life and dance. I have known teachers like him and they gave me my greatest training. Yet, at times his purest attitude toward ballet is kind of the opposite of my feelings. To me, Classical ballet tells the story through pantomime and highlights one technique. Don't be me wrong, I love classical ballet, but for storytelling, I prefer modern or contemporary ballet, less pantomime, and the story is told in the technique. I agree that education about dance and being a smart dancer is one of the best tools in the world. Make your young dancers smarter, teach them they whys and history, to become a more complete dancer.

Thanks Phil...and that applies so much to Nikolai, in his career he had so much unfair treatment, so much jealousy and contempt he didn't deserve, he is the nicest person when you treat him right. In spite of all this he always smiles, even when he dances.. or especially when he dances or should I say danced. And he can be so funny, have seen his funny roles in Fille Mal Gardee, Golden Age and Bright Stream ? If you didn't, I will get you links, you will not find them because they are in Russian. He has an amazing sense of humor but have you ever notice sadness in his eyes?

Nicolai Tsiskaridze is genuinely disturbed by the overall direction in the ballet world outside Russia to downgrade story telling which people love for parodies like Alice in Wonderland by Christopher Wheeldon. And he is the best we have! And Nicolai Ratmansky - he worked with the Kirov in Russia? Surely all is not lost! We still have Nicolai teaching pre-Imperial Russian dance in the 21st century. He is a master teacher, for he has performed all he teaches. He knows his 15 or 16 year old boys, while amazing to my eye, can't perform the high elevations he did - look at his legs. They need to grow to become 20, and then they have hope. He does as much as he can with delicate porcelain. Anyone who thinks he is too tough on students - see his devotion in this video. He cares.

And where do these uneducated dancers go when they retire at 35 or 38 ? With limited education (as he claims) and no exposure to the world, having been coddled in the insulated world of dance, where do these emotional cripples go ? In Toronto, Canada, at the school of the National Ballet (of Canada), ballet students study all the educational basics of a high school education curriculum as well as dance and dance history to emerge as well-rounded persons -- and artists. When they retire, their formal education can take them anywhere in the commercial world, able to make a living outside of dance after a career in dance. It is not impossible. Bravo to the National Ballet of Canada school for seeing that, for their students, there is a life beyond he footlights.
