while hiking in Berkley township in the early 1980s I fell into a similar bog near Wrangle brook. The more I struggled the deeper I went.It was like a suction of muck...After calming down I was able to slowly come out from the muck...So if you panic and loose your head you will be dead...

One can get chiggers doing this; however, if you use "Off" it is deadly to them. We usually spray that on our pants and socks during mid and late summer.

Am 6’ and used to hop into swamps with jeans and boots on, sinking up to my chin, and slowly making my way upstream, holding onto cedar tree roots. Definitely deeper than you’d expect and some of the bog gas you release 😱

I use to live in a rural part of Indiana and there were areas like this in certain parts of the woods. One drunken night my guys and I decided to take a short cut home from the bar through a pitch black forest with only our phones for light. When we just got out of it into a flat prairie area we heard the most horrifying scream. (later learned it was from a fox) Seriously, look up the audio from them. >_>
We all hauled ass, screaming and swearing blindly in the night. One of our friends was way ahead of us and I suddenly heard a splash and OH SHI- , he ended up falling in one of these random water traps. He got out just as fast as he fell in but was completely soaked to his shoulders. Another friend had a busted mouth from running into a tree. We all had scratches from branches and thorny bushes lol.

Bending over to push a stick to make a point that was already made is very dangerous to do in bogs, swamps, and any place with quicksand, which includes beaches. Also drowning is not the concern, crush syndrome is, or asphyxiation via your ribs being squeezed. Granted if you drop below your head then drowning becomes a problem. But the ground is pushing X amount of force per square inch upon the body when trapped in such muck.
