  • It's in the title.
    We took the plunge and bought a 1974 Catalina 30 sailboat towards the end of the summer. She needed some serious love before heading south with us, so we take you through the process with us. Intermingled are teary goodbyes to Boston, emotional highs and lows, us losing our boat on launch day, Wesley's Kylo Ren impersonation, dolphins and muuuuuch more.

    Enjoyed your video! We just bought a 1983 Catalina 30 and will have it in the marina down from yours. You passed by it at the end of the video. It’s our first sailboat as well! Hope to see you on the water! Good luck! Message if you need any help!!

    Hi Guys, I had a Catalina 30 for several years on Lake Michigan. To open the hatch I would just push up a little to get it above the boards and the pull back a bit and it would open a little. then just get your hand on the end and slide it open.

    Did I get this right: you’re assessing the boat AFTER you bought it?

    CONGRATS on the boat. I own a 79' C-30 w/ and A4 as well. Great motor when maintained! Replacing a cracked oil pan as we speak. The boat work never ends, so don't let it get you down. Also you've got some nice upgraded hardware I see. New garhauer blocks, traveler etc. Keep up the goodwork.

    You guys don’t know how much I envy you, I wish I had the guts. I’m 55 and wish I could go back in time and live and venture like your, just imagine the future stories, I’m considering buying a boat and see what happens. Will continue to watch and hopefully see a good outcome

      Never too late! I'm a couple years younger than you, and I'm planning on buying a sailboat, moving, and living aboard it. I've always wanted to do it! Moving to a whole new state and marina town. What more of an adventure than that at my age. Go for it!!

    I sailed a Catalina 30 with Atomic Four for 5 years and had no significant problems with the engine. I remember it was quite accessible and easy to service.

    So today today I got a 1980 Catalina 30, ironically it’s in the Merrimack or on land in the Merrimack. I almost didn’t do it because I want to learn to sail but know nothing. So it will sty in storage for at min 6 months gonna paint the bottom and go over the boat and get familiar with it . Take a sailing course. Eventually I will sail it out of there to the Chesapeake. Closer to my home. Hurricane season there and winter south somewhere. Universal 25 hp. Has 54 miles in it. You were a big inspiration.

  • @cometjockeydave4041
    @cometjockeydave4041 Před 3 lety +3

    Congrats on the new old boat. On my Catalina 30 I have a 10 hp. Outboard which helps me steer in tight spaces in a blow, and offers a backup if the main engine quits on me when I need mechanical propulsion. If you know anything about what I mean by that you have an atomic bomb on board it would be well worth your while get a 10 horse outboard to backup that atomic 4 under the galley.
    On a brighter note that slider for the companionway hatch is missing a handle on the inside. Getting one to put in there would solve the problem of getting trapped below deck every time you close the thing. Fair winds.

      Thank you so much! And yes we’ve considered an outboard for some much needed assistance! We will have to look into getting a handle for the interior! 😅

    Hampton Roads is a tough place to sail with all the military traffic, lots of people have trouble here. I've lived here my whole life and while sailing is something I see a lot of people do, we just aren't as big as say Annapolis or Rhode Island.

  • @JOHNALOOPONE

    Fantastic. With any gasoline or propane devices especially pre existing eqpt on board. Strongly advise Ventilate the boat interior. No open flame. Extra care with electrical systems. Check all grounding bonding is secure. No smoking on board. On the Potomac there are several Marinas near Ft Washington that do have some slips for Your situation. It would be a real hard time for a dog. They need constant movement. Watch Mads and Teal. They are experts at what They do. We wish You so much good luck. See You on the water.

    Welcome to boat life. Engine work, fiberglass work, sail work, electrical work, just keep at it, your just at the beginning. I wonder how many hours I've spent working on boats..... Maaaaaany. But one sunset in a secluded anchorage or at sea makes it all worth it.

    Wow! The start to your journey is equivalent to quenching thirst by drinking from a fire hydrant. You took on a lot and watching your video I kept sayin like what did you expect? A boat on land for 10 years. A 46 year old engine. Original cushions that smell. Wiring needs updating. Winches need service. Sails need a clean and mend. Rigging needs to be checked.
    It is worth it though. When boat is under sail on a beautiful day you will feel joy.
    FYI. Having a tiller and a wheel helm is like an outboard and an inboard motor. Quite common. I have two tiller in case one breaks.
    I think you are off to an awesome start. Some helpful perspective from someone who purchased a 50 year old sailboat with the original motor, built in Finland, ie no one in the USA knows how to repair and parts are very expensive and must be sourced from England. First, a 46 year old boat in itself is an adventure. Second, relocating and starting school in itself is an adventure. Finally learning to be a mariner and sailor is an adventure. When going thru hell, keep going!
    I look forward to future videos. Congrats.

    Just clicked on your video, congrats on the boat. One question though, do you two have any boating experience at all, power or sail? Most youtube sailors have some experience, but if you guys don't have any, this is going to make for some interesting watching! Anyway wish you all the luck, experienced or not you did the main thing most of us don't, you went out and got a boat!

    ...btw I believe the atomic four is an excellent motor. Any 46 year old motor that has not run for 10 years will need some serious attention to reach an acceptable level of reliability.
    Check out Moyer Marine, a business established by a devotee of the atomic four. The forum is especially useful. If you have an issue chances are 1,000’s of others did too. And the explanation and solution is spelled out in layman’s terms on the forum. Don Moyer also has great videos on CZcams. Don’t be too quick to toss the motor overboard. An investment of time and a DIY approach will be rewarded with treasure.

    • @tessawesley118
      @tessawesley118  Před 3 lety +1

      Haha that’s a great question! The previous owners were very “creative” and rigged it up to operate with both. The helm will most likely have to go in the future because of its poor execution. Thanks for watching!

    • @smosh91
      @smosh91 Před 3 lety +1

      It looks like a previous owner added the helm at some point (factory installations years later were further aft in the cockpit), so the full tiller was left. Interesting....but at least auto helm via tiller pilot is much cheaper and easier to install/maintain using the wheel!
