    Initially I was on the fence about the topic of this video....but I was eventually attracted to watch, like a MagSwitch on a metal plate.

    Colin - another very informative video. The MagSwitch is a great addition. As you turn the knob, it aligns the polarity of two magnets inside the device, allowing you to turn on or off the magnetic field. Thanks for all of your videos. JT

    Keeping wood secure and steady while drilling is definitely important. The first time you have a piece of wood get slung around and slamming into your hand while you're trying to drill a hole thru it will teach you a valuable and hopefully not too painful a lesson. By securing/clamping down the piece of wood, your hole will also be more accurate....a nice round hole instead of one that has a lot of slop. I spent many years in machine shops and learned how to safely use the big mills on metalworking. The same practices for the mills can be...and should be...used when using a typical drill press. It's just as easy to work safely as not to work safely....your fingers & hands will thank you for it.

    Colin, I'm sure you have seen and thought about drill press tables (shop-made or purchased), with T-tracks if you like those. They seem to work better for woodworking than the small round metal tables, just wondering why you decided against?

  • @kellyanderson995

    So here's an idea for you... On your website where you have the social media links like twitter, facebook, etc. Add an icon for Amazon. I had to SEARCH your website for "Amazon" to find your Amazon Store. Couldn't find it in the links above either. Make it easy for people to use your affiliate store, and you'll make more money, which is a good thing because then you'll be able to afford to make more of these fun videos.

    Rare earth magnets are pretty cheap on eBay. They're about 10x the price if you buy them at HD or Hobby Lobby.
    I like to keep a stack of them on hand for oddball projects .

    I have a question about drill press use that is really making my life difficult. How do you drill further than the spindle travel on the drill press? My drill press has a travel on 2'' max. But I often need to bore through a 2x4 for a dowel. I even have some 4x4 stock that I need to bore straight through for some carriage bolts. Because of the travel it never goes through all of the way. Not even close. I have tried to get creative and drill as deep as I can, then raise the table and start the press with the bit already sunken and try to go that way but the bits just snap off. I even tried using the hand drill and drilling a small pilot all the way through and then just using those marks on the press but even with my being as still as possible it still wasn't straight. UGH I am at a loss here.

    Colin,
    Have you found most Angle Iron to be square? I would like something to use on a Band saw as well as my drill press that I can rely on being square.

    • @gregwarner3753
      @gregwarner3753 Před 4 lety

      You can square off angle iron with a sharp file and an accurate square. The work is tedious but you will learn how to use a file. Accurate filing is a basic shop skill.

      Mag switches are a great tool. I bought some mag switches that was a feather board for my tablesaw would've worked out great except my tablesaw base was aluminum, but I do have a drill press that has a steel base and these would be fantastic for that application, I knew my tablesaw base was aluminum I just didn't make the connection when I purchased the item, can you say rookie mistake.
