    How do you be yourself amid social pressure? Why do stereotypes exist?
    Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright are reacting to Disney Channel classic, High School Musical. They’re taking a look at being yourself in the face of social expectations. Jonathan talks about stereotypes and the dynamics of friendship. Alan points out legitimately good filmmaking elements of High School Musical, and they talk about why they unironically enjoy this movie.

      If you do High School Musical 2, you'll notice that Zac Efron's hair changes color throughout the film. That's because he had just come off from doing Hairspray, in which he had to die his hair jet black for Link Larkin. In High School Musical 2, you'll see his hair go back and forth between jet black, in-between, and his natural brown hair. So, if you're wondering why his hair was constantly changing color, that's why.
      Also, High School Musical 2 is the first time Zac Efron actually sings. In the first film, Drew Seely did all the singing in the film and Zac lipsynced his vocals, which I don't understand why because Zac's voice isn't bad at all.

      For me I have a serious grudge against this movie. I grew up in a small town where no one would tell us what high school was like. By the time I was 13 and this came out, i was so stoked to go to high school. Apart from petty conflict among cliques, it made high school look like so much fun. When I got to high school, not only was there more pressure to do well but the petty fights were downright vindictive and a lot of kids at my school were on drugs, had eating disorders or a whole host of mental disorders. And if you didn’t have a clique that accepted you, you either became a pariah or were simply invisible. I couldn’t look at this movie the same way again after high school started. It’s one thing if this was marketed to older audiences but it was clearly marketed at kids who hadn’t been to high school yet.

      Exactly. I’d actually would’ve preferred to see the main protagonist’s performance come first and then the antagonists performance come last or next after them.
      Honestly, I think Sing (2016) did this well. As no good guy or bad guy who performed in the climax had their performance be the middle or first one that nobody ever thought should be seen as higher or above.

    What I like about High School Musical, all of them, is that they're movies that aren't ashamed or scared to just have the energy of those cheesy sitcoms from the 90's to early 2000's. It's honestly really nice having a series of films that fully embrace being bombastic, silly and cheesy but are still willing to tone it down when the scene calls for it.

    • @ericspearman2998
      @ericspearman2998 Před 14 dny +26

      Agree! These movies were/are so earnest about their intentions and they don’t back down. I really hope they get to 3 because I adore that one most of all. It falls into the same category as the first (THE CLASSIC, THE ONE AND ONLY) The Princess Diaries for me of being a film that was not given the credit it deserved for having more wisdom in it than the surface would suggest. I love the scene in 3 where Mrs. Darbus speaks with Troy about how she sent an application to FREAKING JUILLIARD for him and while some would say she overstepped I believe her intentions were nothing but pure and honest. After all, she didn’t even try to force him to accept she just pleaded with him to consider all of his options and think beyond what his dad and best friend wanted for him. Sure, U of A may have been a childhood dream, but he is no longer a child and his interests have clearly blossomed well beyond what they were. Sorry for the wall of text, but I just want to say I agree with you that these movies are awesome and deserve to be cherished.

    I'm afraid I'm going to have to push back on the idea that Sharpay has herself figured out, because the fact that she doesn't actually feeds into why she's the antagonist of the trilogy (No you cannot convince me otherwise, do not try). Sharpay does know what she likes without as much internal conflict as seen in Stick To The Status Quo, but she's been brought up in an environment where she's had everything pretty much handed to her for years on end, so she's not properly adjusted to dealing with the possibility of other people being in her sphere, in this case theater. And while it's kind of easy for her to stay in a bubble during her high school years, that's something that would metaphorically smack her in the face hard if she tried to keep that mindset out in the adult world.
    Sharpay is genuinely talented and could absolutely make a case for herself with that talent, but she doesn't actually do that until the end of the 3rd movie. Rather, she worries more about sabotaging others so that no one else can even try, because she has no faith in her talents to stand up to scrutiny/competition (which could actually be a really interesting deep dive into her mind and imply that maybe she kind of knows or at least has an idea that she hasn't had to work for things as much as some others, but I digress). She becomes insecure the moment even the mention of someone else being into theater and singing is brought up because she cares more about the attention and the spotlight than anything else. If she were actually secure in herself and had a healthier mindset of doing it purely because it's fun and she loves it, she would more than likely be THRILLED that someone else is finally showing interest in theater at a place like East High where that seems to be limited.
    The reason why Sharpay is the antagonist is because she gatekeeps what she loves while driven by bad habits and ends up isolating herself from others as a result. The protagonists are those that willingly break down their barriers and accept each other's hobbies and talents and share them with each other.
    Note: Even with everything I just said, Ashley Tisdale did absolutely SLAY this role and she is fun to watch.

As an adult, I can definitely see where grace should be given to her because she's a high schooler whose world is being upended, but She's Got To Learn To Hear No, and honestly high school is one of the safest places to do that. I honestly can't tell anymore which Sharpay-is-the-hero people are serious and which ones are exaggerating their opinion for comedy or outright kidding. I'm definitely a feminist and I can't wrap my head around people's narrative of "Sharpay is demonized because she is a strong-willed woman, and they want all the women to be like the docile Gabriella". Like... Gabriella is the one representing making your own decisions and following your dreams in this movie. It's SHARPAY who wants people to stick to the status quo, for heaven's sake! Just because Gabriella is shy and nerdy, she is suddenly a bad female character? That doesn't sound very feminist to me... Throughout the entire series she always does what she herself feels is right, not what is expected of her. From keeping her math prodigy past a secret because she wants to try a different start, to pursuing both science and musical activities, to refusing to play mind games with Sharpay in the sequel, to leaving her summer job and taking a break with Troy when she felt like it wasn't good for her...

      @@Satherian If we're thinking about socially, usually the people who had the least drama going on in their friend groups seemed to be the STEM kids. Theater had so much drama, but also, on a different note- it's so much harder to get a scholarship as an arts kid. As a POC, all of the scholarships that included being latino/a/x, were for stem programs. Nothing ever fit my interests and for the longest time, I just accepted I'd never go to university because I would never get enough financial aid to go. Not sure if it's intentional, but the point certainly is true. People who get "creative" degrees and formal training, unless they make it big and get to the absolute *top* of their field, are usually treated pretty poorly over their choice of lifestyle. It's not even treated like a career.
      And I get it, to a degree, because you can't make money being a singer or a painter unless you're really good at it and really committed and what little money an amateur starting out would get is pretty pitiable compared to a "real job"... but at the same time, I don't want to live in a world without music and art. _I just don't._ And you have to start somewhere. Unless you're a nepo baby, you're not starting from the top.

I would like to point out: these high school friends were so committed to supporting Troy and Gabriella in their theater audition, they all agreed to set off a chemical reaction at the Scholastic Decathalon (effectively gassing EVERYONE in attendance with God knows what) while at the same time activating a false fire alarm in a crowded gymnasium. If this weren't a Disney movie, imagine the consequences of those kinds of shenanigans--all because two people wanted to make a musical audition and all their friends insisted on coming to see it :)

    I actually like how Troy's Dad treated him in that scene. As someone who was both in theatre and an athlete before. It's good to teach Troy that he has a responsibility to the team especially in such a huge moment. It's not toxic. As a captain on a sports team, especially one that's any good. You have to carry a certain amount of weight and avoid a certain amount of distractions.

    • @Ashley-xu1lk
      @Ashley-xu1lk Před 14 dny +36

      I don't think anyone (at least in the video) is saying that Troy's dad was being toxic. What he was doing though was putting too much responsibility on his son while disrespecting his son and Gabrielle. He called Gabrielle "that girl" in a dismissive tone, blamed her for distracting Troy when he is old enough to make is own decisions, and for a sport that requires a team to play Troy's dad is putting all of that responsibility on Troy as if he's the key to winning (when again there's a whole team of people on his side). He also dismissed his own son's new interest in singing and is part of the group of people giving him crap for it.
      It's okay to teach Troy the meaning of responsibility, but Troy's dad could've have approached this situation differently. He could've told him how happy he is he found a new passion and met a girl he likes, but he still needs to put his focus on basketball because he has an obligation as a member of the team and as the team captain to work as hard as his teammates and do the best he can. And the dad could've also not made it seem that he's the only person that can get them to win the championships, because holy crap that's too much unnecessary pressure. Again, for the third time, this is a team sport.

    HSM is amazing and I will never let anyone tell me it’s too cheesy to be enjoyable. All three of them were about finding out who you want to be and breaking free of expectations, but each time with a slightly different edge to it.
    1 was finding yourself vs what friends/ society tell you
    2 was stand by your friends or bend yourself to fit in with what you think you want
    3 was your hopes for the future vs parents’ expectations
    And the music is still so enjoyable and relatable that I unironically listen to some of them. Moreover, I still get teary eyed whenever I see them graduate in the third movie, because even if it’s technically twos school years (and a summer) you still see them grow up and have hopes for their futures and it feels like you lived through their self-finding processes. ❣️

My nephew’s parents are the classic, “my straight son is defined by playing sports and literally nothing else”. He started doing tap dance with my niece last year but recently announced he’s stopping because it’s so-called not his thing, even though he absolutely loved it. This happens when he goes to his mom’s house, and my brother-in-law doesn’t fight it because he only sees men as having traditional masculine interests too. My sister has tried her best at cultivating different potential interests, but she’s the step mom so she can only get so far. Shes at least managed to spark an interest for reading and playing the trumpet, he never read for fun before knowing her.

    I have to disagree with the editor. Sharpay was not the most talented one at East High, it was most definitely Ryan. Sharpay was a close second, but RYAN was the true musical talent

      YESS.. I have been saying this for SO LONG. Ryan/Lucas Grabeel is the most talented person in this cast.
      Also (specific to the editor's note), I absolutely love Ryan in the second movie, and he didn't betray Sharpay. She got what she deserved in that movie.
      I understand the argument of her wanting to help Troy make connections and succeed. But she did it by manipulating everybody and literally tossing Ryan to the side.

      @@tjohns25 also she didnt do it by the goodness of her heart. she wanted to get troy's love and tried to buy him with his dream future. it was manipulation 101. saying ryan betrayed her after what she put him through is honestly ridiculous.

      It was him and Kelsi, then it was Sharpay. But tbh it wasn’t very close. Sharpay, could never not play herself.

      There’s also Kelsi on the piano. You can’t have a musical without music, and Kelsi was the right hand woman for Darbus, not Sharpay.

    So many genres jam packed into a story about adversity and challenging stereotypes: pop, dance-pop, pop punk/pop rock (Stick to the status quo), pop-jazz, hip-hop, ballad, salsa.

    The most fake part about this entire movie, is the number of hats the student are wearing in school.

    I would love to see some more High School Musical content! As a girl who was born in 2006 (the beginning of the franchise) I adored these movies though keeping in mind that high school in reality would be much different. These movies are cheesy and light hearted but so enjoyable and serious. Seeing John and Alan talk more about these movies would be great. Also loved the song and dance they did at the end. These guys always know how to make my day. ❤️😆
