Creating nikon picture controls - is it easier in camera or using the picture control utility 2 app?

  • Whilst many Nikon cameras come pre-loaded with picture control settings, there is the capability to create your own customised ones. This can be done either in camera or using the nikon picture control utility 2 app, but which way is easier?

Do any of you use Picture Control Utility 2? It was a bit of a discovery for me but a much better way of creating picture controls if you want to use them.

Thanks for making this video! I'm creating new presets for making jpeg transfers to my phone so much faster when coupled with Snapbridge's auto bluetooth transfer feature. Great for sending previews to clients immediately or when shooting casually, where post processing just feels like too much work.

Thank you for this teaching. What you presented and how you did so has been enormously helpful for me. Proper job!

Adrian..very nice video and quite detailed. Thank you so much. The only thing you need to add is how to import (copy to camera) step. Could not understand why the camera didn’t see my adjustments till I found this step. Again, many thanks

So, I thought I understood simple enough that you can save the custom picture control to tour camera or to computer. However, I'm trying to save the custom pic control as one of my View NX2 settings but no such luck. All I can do is launch the utility play with the picture, but I can't save the picture itself or the utility as another custom option in NX2. Any ideas of what I'm missing?

Great video as always! All picture controls work for video, too, I hope?

I'm yet to try picture control with video. I'm assuming that it will be largely the same but there may be some differences. Have you tried it with video yet? Adrian

I have both Picture Control Utility 2 and Capture NX-D. Is one better than the other or does it depend on what you're trying to do? Is it better to simply use one, or start in one, get the photo where you like it and then move to the other for those "finishing touches"?
Picture Control 2 looks a bit more "WSYIWYG" (what you see is what you get)...NX-D looks like a deeper "nuts and bolts" way to affect/change the overall background, more technical aspects of the photo. Is that a fair assumption?

Adrian, that was an interesting demonstration. My question as to on-pc Picture Control Utility is how to position it? As a basic alternative to Lightroom? As a Raw to JPEG converter? In-camera, there is some advantage of being able to generate JPEG shots that you could hand out or publish as almost SOOC. Fast and easy. The utility can enrich the options, that is clear. My limitation, I guess.

The way I'm looking at it and may try out is pretty much as you describe. I'll continue to capture RAW and use those for what I call my Lightroom Classic workflow where I will use a lot of local adjustments and produce Hi-res images. But for quick proofs and/or social media images I may be able to simplify what I have to do in Lightroom CC or Snapseed by using an in camera picture control. It may work well in relation to portraits perhaps where it can be used to soften the skin a bit for exmaple. Yet to try it in anger though so just some thoughts, Adrian

This software would be great if it support RGB curves. With such feature it would be possible to create creative color graded picture controls, but without that feature I found it next to useless.

I agree it is slightly limited in this area which limits its use a bit. Maybe one day Nikon will work with someone like Adobe to allow for presets to be imported into the camera! Adrian

I really wish they'd ad the curve tool in camera, like panasoic, olympus, and sort of fuji.

I agree, it would really make the Picture Controls more useful and wider adoption potentially. Maybe in future updates/cameras we'll see this developed?

Yes, it's on my list of things to do this week. I think it's a minor bug fix with the CF Express update etc coming soon hopefully.

    • @AF8Images
      @AF8Images  Před 4 lety

I don't believe there is a flat profile in some cameras. You might want to try the Neutral option if that's there. Hope this helps. Adrian
