  • Our reaction to Norway's Eurovision 2024 song "Ulveham" from Gåte. We watch their live performance from the grand final of Melodi Grand Prix and review their chances, while praising lead singer lead singer Gunnhild Sundli. The folk-rock and metal band sing in Nynorsk and the opening bars feature a traditional kulokk -- a herding call.

Gåte = Riddle, Ulveham = Wolf skinwalker. And the instrument is a nøkkelharpe (Key harp), it’s Norwegian/Swedish. It’s a 1000 year old tale. The song is about a girl who was cursed by her stepmother to live in the forest as a wolf. One day she sees her stepmother in the woods and eats her, and she was pregnant, so as she drinks her brother’s blood, the curse is lifted. «Never would I be whole and well, until I got to drink my by brother’s blood».

Not sure I agree on the translation. In this case Gåte is a name and that throws things off a bit. As many words in Norwegian they have different meanings depending on the context. Gåte in the forklore context would probably better be translated to a mystery or even enigma.

@@willewiking98 Sweden should definitely go with Swedish once again. Yeah, you guys have a strong music industry with bunch of bands and performers who have become successful internationally singing in English. But there's no one other country performing in Swedish (well, we in Finland can also have Swedish language performers but rikssvenska has its own flow and pronunciation compared to finlandssvenska) so it would be cool to hear that distinct vibe and sound. I've listened to Loreen performing in Swedish and that sounds cool. "Fångad av en stormvind" is probably my favorite entry from you. The English version of that song is not quite the same. Loreen's Euphoria was also cool though. But would love to hear some Swedish again.

The "screaming" is "kulokk", tradditionally how the maidens called in the cows from the contryside back in the day. She singing about how her evil stepmother was so jealous of her that she cast a spell on her making her into a sword, needle and horse for the people in the kingdom to use. Then she turns her into a lone wolf to live alone in the forrest. And the only way she can break the spell is to drink her brothers blood. It is based on a 1000 year old folklore. In the end she eats her stepmother and it is interpreted that she was pregnant, therefore she also drank her brothers blood and bruke the spell. Ulveham means wolf pelt 😉

It is inspired by how the maidens would call the cows back from pasture at night, so they could be milked. «Kulokk» simply means «cow call». The animals were taken to a different pasture up in the mountains during summer and a maiden would stay in a little cabin there where she would make cheese etc. and take care of the animals. And she would have her own kulokk which she used to get them back for milking.

on having nature cutaway vs not: people have already commented this, but there’s no LED at mgp, that’s probably part of the reason. i think i prefer *the current version* (without LEDs) with cutaways, rather than the exact current version without, to break up the monotony. but in malmö i at least partially agree they could do something else (LEDs, different lighting/colors) to break it up.
i just hope it’s something that feels as good, because i think the nature shots are quite well done and convey tone, for something that’s just “screensavers.” and the danger with LED is, you don’t want it to be too bright. i think dark staging is necessary for the tone and makes the laser and “glowing fog floor” look beautiful. i think led should be used somewhat sparingly, maybe only in the last chorus. or the LED itself could be dark most of the time, perhaps it’s a dark night on the mountain with a waterfall that’s only visible on part of the screen. i just really don’t wanna detract from the gorgeous laser.

This is a very stirring vocal performance!
So far France's Slimane (Mon Amour) is my favorite song and performance for 2024.

10:49 Here in Norway, we all understand «nynorsk», and many of our dialects are much more like «nynorsk» than «bokmål», if compared - even if we have had «bokmål» as our written language in school. So even if only a minority write «nynorsk» in school as they grow up, it is not understood by a minority. We all learn both written languages in school too, though I can’t say we were very motivated back when I was in school (a long time ago), LOL. «Nynorsk» is also used in TV, newspapers etc. alongside the more commonly used «bokmål», so we all have to deal with both language versions on a daily basis.

Gunnhild’s brother is actually Sveinung, he’s temporarily leaving the band. He plays the violin incredibly well and helped Gåte to find his characteristic ethnic sound since the beginning of the career.

@@mattfiddler7690 He basically started the band and dragged the then 13/14-year old Gunnhild with him. And he's in indeed also the main song writer. The siblings have a background from folk music.

It's not old norse. It's a Norwehian dialect and they use "kulokk". Long time ago women used this "lokk" to call the cows home for the night.

The staging is good, however, I don't think it's melodically strong enough to win ESC. Strong entry though.

8:15 William says she is singing she it's not screaming, 1 second later: This reminds me of AWS, that lead singer screamed
8:25 This woman Gunnhild she is screaming, I mean not screaming she is singing through screams
Stop beating around the bush already william and just say what you really feel
Non norwegian people won't like this and this won't even qualify as it's weird and unconnectable!
