      Both. You can think of atoms as team players and elements the actual teams they belong to. You have atoms (team players) that belong to the same team (element). Team players who belong to a team have the same chemical properties. So individually, you can be an hydrogen atom, but collectively you belong to team (element) hydrogen. :)
