  • Colorectal cancer develops in the colon or rectum, typically arising from abnormal growths called polyps. Factors like age, family history, diet high in red or processed meats, obesity, smoking, and inflammatory bowel diseases can increase the risk. Symptoms may include changes in bowel habits, rectal bleeding, abdominal pain, weakness, and unintended weight loss. Diagnosis involves various tests like colonoscopy, biopsy, imaging scans, and blood tests.
Treatment for colorectal cancer depends on several factors, including the stage of cancer, location, and overall health. Surgery is often the primary treatment, aiming to remove the cancerous tissue. For early-stage cancer, surgery alone may be sufficient. In more advanced cases, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or a combination of both may be recommended to shrink the tumor before surgery or to kill any remaining cancer cells afterward. Targeted therapy and immunotherapy drugs may also be used to attack specific cancer cells or boost the body's immune response against cancer. Regular follow-up care is essential to monitor for recurrence and manage any long-term effects of treatment.
