- Meningococcal bacterial; I say this is the most common bacterial cause of meningitis, when I should have said it children and teenagers. It is the second most common cause in adults behind streptococcus pneumoniae.

I had bacterial meningitis back in 2001. I had all the symptoms and like you said, the rash came last. I had a lumbar puncture, induced coma, all sorts of stuff. Spent about three months in the hospital. Crazy time for that 21 year old me. (i was in college too!)
I spent my 15th birthday in the hospital dealing with meningitis. I just remember bring in pain the entire time, but the extreme neck pain is what I remember the most. I could not, for the life of me, move my neck in any direction. For days. I remember my family singing me happy birthday in the hospital, and being so sad. I hope to never experience this again.

Well this brings back some memories. At age 7 or 8 I got meningitis B. I remember my parents and even our local doctor thought it was a cold, made worse by my allergies (I have a few). Then, one evening I started feeling very weird. I didn't know if i was dreaming or not, or that's what i remember. I lost consciousness while my father was attending some clients (At the time we bred Golden Retrievers and were very careful with who we sold the dogs to, my parents liekd to do a couple of "interviews"). Anyway, our car had a problem and the electrical system was toast... And we lived in the middle of nowhere, so we really needed headlights to use the car.
These clients had a cool new 4x4, so when my mon came out of my room screaming they rushed me to hospital in their car... I dont remember any of that, but I remember waking up on a hospital bed with my mom crying, i had ben out for a couple of days.
The medic told me that those guys in the 4x4 likely saved my life, because if we had to wait for an ambulance it could have been too late.
I spent two months at that hospital, and the first thing my parents got me when i got home was a really cool meccano set. When looking at one very intrincate set of plans (lots of red lines showing where to screw things) i nearly fell over and got an instant headache. I kept experiencing things like that for a month or two.
Not fun, but i survived and as far as i know (hehe) i dont have any sequels. The doctor that accepted me diagnosed it was meningitis right away and started saving my life minutes after i got there.
You healthcare people are the best humanity has to offer.
Hope you took that Doctor to court. That's a very big screw up on his part.
Same story here. I had meningitis B aged 7 and they assumed it was tonsillitis. My parents had a hunch, called a doctor out of hours (leaving a message), got a call back at 5:30am, within 2 hours I was in hospital and my parents were told to prepare for the worst. Luckily I survived it, they said had they waited a day longer or for the tell-tale spots, it'd have been too late.
Aged 17 I got meningitis again, this time coupled with an excess of catarrh build up around my brain. I had headaches constantly for a week but fought through it and everyone in my family assumed it was just me trying to get time off of school. Out of pure chance I had a history assignment due one day and remembered I forgot it as I went to go out to catch the bus. My parents said they'd take me so I went back to my room to print my work off. My parents noticed I hadn't come down in a long while and heard tapping, assuming I was drumming on my desk. Turns out I was having severe seizures. They carried me down, called the ambulance and my parents were told it was meningitis and at that time I was the sickest person in the entire hospital - if I did survive, the chances are I would be disabled and effectively vegetate. My brothers and sister had to come to the hospital to say goodbye and my parents were told to either prepare for the worst again or to be ready for a huge chance to look after me. The surgeons drilled into my skull around where my eyebrows meet my nose and drained the mucus.
My parents came into the room hearing I'd woken up to me quoting, in accurate detail, Scrubs episodes. I barely remember it but my Dad says it's the biggest relief he's had in his entire life.
There is literally no way I can thank the medical professionals enough. Thank you so much.
As a child I had meningitis for a few weeks to a couple months before it was treated. It’s was only after I was unable to walk that a doctor properly diagnosed it. Wish more doctors were better informed. Good video.
My beautiful little baby boy, at the tender age of three weeks had meningitis. He had all the symptoms except the rash. We rushed him to hospital where it was confirmed. I have never cried so much fearing I might lose him. Thank God he recovered but went on to develop many other problems, but I love him so much and will always be there for him. Meningitis is deadly, I feel for all of you that have gone through this and you have all my sympathy. God bless. X

I had bacterial meningitis in January- February of this year (2018), i went into a coma and had to relearn a lot after i woke up. Still recovering almost 9 months later.
My brother was admitted to hospital on Monday with bacterial meningitis. He was put into an induced coma but has now been brought off sedation. He has been able to look at us and listen to us talking. He has even fed himself strawberries but currently seems very confused and unable to talk. Was it the same for you?
Sew Darn Neat yes i was confused when i woke up, and very loopy from all the pain medication i was on. i didn’t have trouble talking for that long, some things took a lot longer than others like writing ( i now have brain damage which caused my right hand to lose feeling ). it was frustrating because i was fully functioning mentally but my body was on a whole other level of capability. i couldn’t stand, walk etc without being completely held up by nurses. my best advice is not to push anything. when his talking comes back, it will pop back into his head that’s the best way i can explain it. he’s probably just wiring everything back together again in his head and that takes time. some things will come faster than others and that’s important to remember. i could talk almost right away, but i couldn’t walk or remember things.

I was born with meningococcal meningitis. It formed in the womb and it started to spread to my brain. They fitted a long line and I was saved. I was so lucky. It only affected my growth plate in my leg
I am now 15 and I have had 6 surgerys so far of different frames on my leg to correct misshaped bone and shortness
This really tears open old wounds because when I was twelve one of my best friends passed because of bacterial meningitis.

My husbands little sister died from meningoccal meningitis. She was sick, within 24 hours of showing symptoms she passed. But she actually helped create the vaccine that is now widely used. They didn't have one back then. Thanks for the video. I am a fan of yours, all the way from Utah, in the USA

I had a rt submaxillary salivary gland with 3 lymph nodes removed in ''78, SJS in'84, then meningitis (drs thought viral) in '88. I recently found out that all three problems were really due to having Sjogren's Syndrome but I wasn't diagnosed until 2018.
I've had meningitis twice! and it was the worst thing ever. I could barely move. I was isolated and have epilepsy. I now have constant migraines and I am sensitive light, which makes it hard to be outside. I have empathy for all that contract this horrible disease.

I got viral meningitis as a child and it was a nightmare. I was told since I was at a children’s center anyone could have passed on some viruses to me and that’s how it all started. Since then tho I never got an ear infection again and didn’t get a cold again for 10 years. My fam suspects my immune system just got more robust after facing off meningitis lol.

Not sure how I stumbled on your channel, but for once I'm glad with CZcams's meddling in my tastes of video, your channel is brilliant!
One thing that somewhat puzzles me about modern medicine, and this video briefly touches on it as well, if a fever is the bodies' way of fighting against (some types of-) diseases why do we try and prevent, stop or lessen the fever during treatment, can't it be 'put to good use' and help with the cure?
Apart from some minor discomfort I, with only a Discovery Channel-esque knowledge in medicine =p, would've guessed that the benefits would outweigh the discomfort of a fever.
Apologies if this question gets answered in a different video, I'm not done binge-watching all your videos quite yet =p.
Brilliant question. We do it solely for comfort just because the evidence is lacking. In children (who aren't as good at regulating their body temperature) we used to think antipyretics reduce the risk of febrile seizures, but evidence in 2007 disproves this. So our current guidance in the UK (from 2013) is 'Consider using either paracetamol or ibuprofen in children with fever who appear distressed and 'continue only as long as the child appears distressed'.
Isn't it also because fevers can get excessively high, in which case it can become dangerous because at higher temps. proteins denature (lose their shape) resulting in loss of function.
I had this at 18 was horrible was the bacterial one had septicaemina aswell was fine after 9 days in hospital pain is horrid
I had viral spinal meningitis when I was 15 or 16. My parents thought it was just the flew so I didn't get immediate attention for it. I had all the symptoms though I don't remember stiffness. when I was finally taken to the doctors it was a circus. When I was finally taken to the hospital I remember they were waiting for us to show up and they actually pulled me out of the car, put me on a stretcher and rushed me in. I only remember a couple of things after that. I remember the needles in my back, my dad helping me with a pee test ( totally embarrassing for a 16 year old) and strangely and most significantly I remember watching all the staff working on me from above which I have not forget to this day and I am 52. My grades did started going down after that and it is seems harder to learn new things especially from just reading. Even to this day my reading is very slow and frustrating. But I do feel that if this is the worst thing that happened I am was very lucky.. My heart goes out to those for those who suffered more

I contracted blood viral meningitis when I was three years old, now I'm fifty nine...I only recall the things my parents told me, but I was told that a child the same age, with the same disease came in at the same time, sadly my parents told me she didn't survive....I did hear that it was contagious, so I was isolated from everyone. My mom was pregnant at the time. She told me that I came in contact with a carrier of it....I wish I could tell more...

I have a burning sensation pain on the sick side of my neck and it goes partially down my spine and into my right shoulder socket. It isn’t a sore feeling but a burning inflamed painful feeling. Started out if no where two nights ago. No body aches or fevers tho and the pain is increasing

My dad has a bacterial meningitis. From lung to blood to the brains. Luckily he survived and 30 minutes later he was a goner they said. This was last week that happen. They just did a operation on him to remove excess fluid from his brains . And is still confused and getting a lot of pain killers/ low dosage morfine and one hand is bounded since he always wants to remove his tubes from his nose and head and underneath

How is your dad doing now? My dad had a similar case as your dad but the doctors think it started in His liver... my dad didn’t survive sadly as the infection in his brain was so severe.. I hope your dad is doing okay.
@@xW0ntons he's a bit better... But can't walk with his left leg. And he walks slower then before. And his brain got a little damage so he get scared a lot and yea kinda changed his personality. Sorry to hear that about your dad... May he rest in peace in heaven

is there a thing called meningitis outbreak? like dengue outbreak where in a small community several people could be affected then kinda like just disappear.. coz in our baranggay there had been a "meningitis outbreak" as what others call it, and 3 children were severely affected. one of them is my cousin, he is 21 years old by now but act like a 3 year old. he can't talk nor walk. he was not like that when we are growing up but when he was around 7 or 8 he got this high fever and even hospitalized but I think he was beyond saving by then. coz after that he was not the same.
Yes you can have a meningitis outbreak but it's usually very rare
I have throat irritation, drainage in throat, sinus headache, neck pain (but not stiffness) and pain in between shoulder blades. No fever, nausea or sensitivity to light. Do I need to go get checked for meningitis? Also I have had a vaccine for meningitis A,C,W, and Y but NOT for B.

Some doctors thought I had meningitis. I did not. They did perform a spinal tap, causing later post dural headaches. Not fun.
Betsy H I got that, and I have persistent back pain and damage because they sent me back to work immediately. It was stupid. But I guess better safe then sorry considering it is very much a terminal disease when you ignore it.

Richard Delgadillo you’re more likely to redevelop meningitis after you have been sick before unlike viral infections which grant you immunity bacterial infection come back more easily to people who have had them before if you have a stiff neck high fever confusion sensitivity to light go to the emergency room or dial 911 you’re more lilies to live without complications the quicker you treat it as it’s fatal without treatment

Question for you Dr. I have had a fever for about 5 days. It's been kept down with acetaminophen but I dont have any cough or any mucus at all. Just fever, fatigue, body aches, and confusion and dizziness. It's not the flu *as that's the only test my doctor did* any ideas???

AJ Productions no doctors should have started preventative antibiotic treatment to anyone that’s had close contact with the patient the it’s not very contagious but can be very dangerous if you will with a person who has been diagnosed or interacted with before
