That angled shot on the run, my coach specifically taught us that shot. It became one of my favourite shots, and I hit it against someone who kept bragging about his state ranking and he stood there completely stunned for 3 seconds before calling it out (jnr tournaments here were generally umpired by themselves, with a possible exception of finals, so cheating was relatively common. Though they had a tournament referee you could request to stand on court and observe). We were taught it as a topspin crosscourt shot, and I could sometimes land it about 1m or so from the net when I got it right, on full sprint to the side of the court. It's definitely a lost art and just seeing that shot makes me nostalgic and wish I could still play.

It's simply not true that players are hitting less acute angles. It's happening more today than ever. The big 3 era (which has basically come to a close) was responsible for developing the incredible acute angle. Watch the matches today, and you'll see those angles regularly. So along with massive power, which has been around even before Federer, the ability to hit angles has just gotten more mathematical!

I do think that the angle shots are still used on a regular basis, it's just not that televised as often as it used to due to the top 3 ending of their dominance on the courts and on TV coverage.

I would argue that players as just as technical as before. But in order to find angles you need to be inside the court most of the time and change durection. Both are made very difficult by the sheer pace of today's game.
