- Note: The XF 18mm F1.4 tested was a pre-production unit.
The new Fujifilm XF 18mm F1.4 is a pretty sweet lens, providing a 27mm equivalent focal length for Fujifilm's X-mount cameras. Find out why we like this fast, sharp 18mm lens.

Do I have a Fuji? No. Can I use this lens? Well, no. Do I want to watch Chris and Jordan? Yep!
Me too! I just like their style.
"Grate" job!!
Ba dum tss....
Where ever I go I always see you😭
@@darunabei7641 Exactly :))
Hope I get to see a video of You testing this lens! :D
The brilliant colours, even in video, really strike you with this lens.
I think Fuji did a banging job, creating a near-perfect modern APS-C prime!
Always love it when Camera Store TV and DPReview are right next to each other in my feed! Nothing like a double dose of calgary camera goodness to start the day!
this video asked and answered every question I had about the 18/1.4, well done, also beautifully shot
Great to see some more Fuji content on the channel. Fantastic review as always!
18mm f2 has always been my favorite, this is another must buy
Wow! Got on this one quick, guys!
I was looking forward to this! Thanks!
Thank you for the review! Hit all the points I was looking for
I don't even have a Fuji but I still watch these videos b/c you guys are awesome!
Same here!
Yet another great video! Thanks for the insights!
Great review as always! Let’s all put pressure on Fuji to please release updates to their 23mm, 35mm, and 56mm lenses! We want WR and fast autofocus!
the colure and contrast looks so mazing & cinematic by the walk around in the city! nice 👍🏻
DAMN Jordan is looking happy.
He should be using the Pentax.
it’s amazing how fast these and other lenses go from rumor to leaks to actual reviews. the fuji 33 1.4 is coming next. can’t wait.
By the time this stuff leaks out of Japan it’s probably nearly finished development and entering manufacturing, so I’m sure the actual R&D process behind these lenses is a whole lotta iceberg we don’t see. It’s exciting times though!
That transition at 0:58 was fantastic
Good looking video! So crisp and clear, that's a lens to consider.
My next lens. Thank you!
hey guys!!! nice review as always!!!
woah that transition
Glad to see Fuji filling out the "pro" level fast prime at this focal length, but personally it'd be more useful to get an update to that 18mm f2. I love the tiny size, and the optical quality is good enough, just wish it had that linear motor (whatever motor that lens has sounds like its constantly breaking). Hard to justify the 18mm f1.4 for the price (for me at least).
They need a 9-10-11mm fast prime to compete with 14mm f/2.8 on fill frame brands. Or at least a 16mm equivalent.
How can you shoot cropped 4k video for real estate for example? 8-16mm f/2.8 is the only option.
Fast wide primes and bad video focus are two handicaps of the system.
6:22 nice colour palette : )
The overall tone is always beautiful in the episodes shot on Fuji. More please! Lens looking nice. I guess I expected it to be just a hair smaller compared to the 16mm. Nice though. Real nice.
Not even close to Pentax K-01
Instablaster
sad
One big advantage of the 16mm f/1.4 is the Nano-GI coating.
Looks very interesting! I own the 16mm 1.4, I love it, but I always feel it`s a bit to wide. The only thing wich I can´t understand is why it has to be $999 for a 1.4 APS-C lense (again)
I guess the car in the reflection at 0:19 really wanted to test their reverse skills that day
A lens I've been waiting on. I feel the 23 (35 in FF) is a bit tight and 16 (24 ff) is a bit too wide for my photography style. Plus it's smaller with a 62mm filter size over the 16 f1.4's 67mm which is quite large for a mirrorless system IMO. Close focussing not quite so good as the 16 f1.4 though.
Great review for a nice piece of gear! Still, I would like it compared with 18mm 2.0. I understand they are completeley different but my bag is not of an infinite size and some primes have to be smaller than the others.
Hoping that this is a sign that they'll update their 23/35 1.4's 🤞🏼
I know because the other third party manufacturer is catching up.
they will update 23 and 56 next year. See fujirumors
They already have made a 23 f2, so a third would seem overkill but who knows.
@@meme4one fujifilm officially said they are working on the old lenses for newer versions. It will come for sure.
Fujifilm is so amazing....
Your samples are much more representative of real world use than the rest of the dpreview gallery. Cheers eh.
Thanks for the speed comparison between 16mm and the new 18mm! I'll stick with my 16 then.
looks like a great lens
Weather Resistance is a great addition. I will probably buy this lens for the weather resistance and quite focusing. I would have loved to have seen, an f1.2 or OIS in this, as I shoot mostly in low light conditions; dusk, night, and indoors. Just anything that could have given me a slightly sharper image for handheld shots, in low light condition (yes I have a tripod and a flash, but I just don't want to use them all the time).
Would that make any difference if you used a camera like the XT4? Would the stabilization of the XT4 make up for the lack of OIS in the lens?
@@mstuartkendall I own two X-T4. That’s what I use to shoot my CZcams videos.
OIS in the lens works with the IBIS to enable further stability for low shutter speeds, when taking photographs. It can make a considerable difference to sharpness at low shutter speeds.
As the X-T4’s dynamic range starts to fall off rapidly above ISO 800, I try not to go any higher into the ISO range. This often means longer shutter durations. I often shoot at 1/60 of a second handheld.
Ooh.
So , can we do a Fuji X Pro 3 Vs Leica q comparison now.
I want to see if I can save some UK pounds.
Lovely reviews as always. Alot of work goes in to videos that seem effortless.

were these shots edited or straight out of camera? they all look so pleasing to the eye and wonderful. thanks guys
damn did homeboy dirty at 00:48 LMAO
Hi, may I know the name of film simulation mode (or color settings, or way to obtain that color tone on Fuji camera / XH-1) of the clip? Thanks.
Do we have an idea of how much the linear motor affects accuracy and particularly noise and smoothness of tracking focus when using it for video?
Fantastic! Using the same lens for filming the segment and for the photography. Please do the same when reviewing cameras. Well done!
Alas I can only upvote this once, so I'm commenting.
For me it will always be D' Preview
you introed you were going to use the lens on an XT3. But then we saw you doing it with an XT4. no big deal. video from XT4 (or is it 3 in Jordans hands) is GREAT. thnx Marty Sender You Tube
The video was shot on an X-T3, the photos were taken with an X-T4. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for this content. Can the 18mm be hendheld for a vlogging? I want to choose which buy for hendheld walking footage facing the camera, without a tripod, is the 18mm too near? 18mm or necessarily 16mm? I have a Sony a6600 and I want to choose between a 16-55 and a 18-105 I would prfer the 18-105 if it could be used for a head talk while walking without a tripod, is the 18mm too near? do you know if there is some content about this around? How to you look shooting your self with a 18mm or with a 16mm holding it with the hand? Thanks, Max
Love the "Ugly" image... Good work.
I do not have the 23 1.4 as I’m a WR snob, so this 18 will be going into my bag to cover between my 16 1.4 and 35 F2.
If you already have the 16 I don't see how the 18 would be that much different a focal length to warrant a purchase
You should use Fujifilm as default camera. Looks amazing!
« One of the gratest » nearly spit my coffee 😂
anyone know the reproduction rate of the lens with fuji extension tubes?
Glad I'm not the only one who lost the sync port cover!
I have a question about this lens, which I have purchased. When I enter Playback mode, there's a slight thump from the lens. When I exit Playback mode, there's a big thump - which is quite annoying. This happens in autofocus mode or manual focus mode. I've never had a lens do this. I'm wondering if other people have encountered this behavior with this 18mm f1.4 lens, and whether anyone knows why this might be happening. Thanks.
4:07 The short focus throw is not just an issue with the 18mm f1.4 but also with all other lenses that don’t have a clutch focus ring. It happens with the 16mm f2.8, the 23mm f2, the 35mm f2, the 50mm f2 etc.
This issue occurs when you are in AF-S mode, you are in linear focus mode, you stop down the aperture ring and you try to manually focus by using AF+MF. The more you stop down the aperture, the shorter the focus throw.
I really hope fuji fixes this in a firmware update soon cause it is very annoying, especially for a company that brands itself as a camera manufacturer that offers an almost full analog experience with all the physical dials (compared to the likes of Sony, Canon etc). Focus by wire is already a huge compromise, fuji please at least fix this issue 🙏🏻
I’m a huge fan of the 28mm focal length, however I can’t justify selling my 16mm f1.4 for almost the same focusing speed.. I also think the 18-55 focuses much faster and more versatile for street. Is this the successor to the 16mm f1.4?
Tempted to cop even tho I’m set with the 16-55, 8-16 and 55-140
I wonder how the FUJIFILM 18mm f / 1.4 compares vs SIGMA 18-35mm f / 1.8 (selecting the 18mm)
How can you leave out a comparison to the og 18 f2.0? There are certainly things to say here.
I might get torched for this... but I do like the 28mm focal length - so much so that I have no problem using my smartphone.
Looks nice but when I saw that it was an LM lens I was hoping for video AF performance that was at least as good as the 18-55 and 16-55. So that’s kind of a bummer. My only complaint about the 16/1.4 is the AF noise in video. Hopefully they will tweak it in firmware and not have the same issues with the 33/1.4 which is the one I’m really interested in.
Has this been fixed?
Now only one left to desire is a Fuji 12mm f2.
Samyang makes that one. spectacular good value and manual focus on 12mm isn't too bad.
Thanks for giving the X-T3 some love instead of the X-T4! Both are great but the 3 is historic.
Why would someone get this over the 16?
@@jimee998 The different focal length?
@@4Kandlez that's a minor difference.
@@jimee998 Not if you prefer 18 (28)over 16 (24)
can I use this lense to x s10
I think they should have made this an f1.2 lens.
That would have been the only convincing factor for me to want this over the 16 1.4.
The 16 is wider, has similar bokeh or maybe even better bokeh since you can get even closer to the subject (15cm v 20cm)
In which way would a 18mm lens benefit from f/1.2? Why would you need such an aperture? Excuse the noob Question 😅
After 6 minutes I think to myself .. "I don't have a Fuji camera" .... hmm ... it doesn't matter ... it's Chris & Jordan ... fixed date 🤣
Another great video, greetings from Vienna, Christian
The video is gorgeous
I was noticing that too... looks better than their usual videos.
XT-3 and a good lens, baby
there are some great measurement systems in here
I'm interested in what results you will get if you use your bamboo screen, and select the corners to focus on, and what the difference in sharpness is compared to focussing in the center.
At 5:16 we do exactly that.
Focus has to be tested much more thoroughly. It is with moving subjects and in low light that you see a BIG difference between the old and the new Fuji lenses.
Surprised you used the X-T3 not X-T4 for the video. Anyway, a lovely video as usual for a nice addition to the Fuji family.
Chris had the X-T4 for shooting stills, so I used my wife's X-T3.
Yeah.. Everyone knows only loosers shoot video on the XT3. Serious digital content creators must upgrade to the XT4. This video is unwatchable. @Jordan Drake please don't do that again. We want to watch CZcams videos in 55k8millionp.
i dunno if i should get this, or the 16mm f1.4
2:22 Fortunately! I grew up using standard Canadian public school rulers...
For just about everything. ;-)
Hey! What happened to pentax k3 m3 ?
We're still waiting for a review sample. Stay tuned!
its pretty cool especially for 18 prime fans but idk not for me i already have the 18-55, 16-55 and 23 1.4 i don't really need this one.
Can I throw this lenses on a xt200?
Yesssss
how about Fujifilm XF 16mm F1.4 ?
Surprised (and disappointed) not a word was said about how the new 18 performs compared to the original version.
Fantastic review. The price is still expensive. Love my 16mm though
thanks! I see no reason why don't buy 16.4 with similar performance but lower price
Please fight the '1000 is a reasonable price' trend. I need a small 18f2 without the purple fringes and a pocketable 60f2 or close. Plastic will do. Like the 35f2. We're not trying to be Cartier Bresson. We'd just like to be discreet and stay solvent, while taking acceptable pictures properly. The 23f2 is no good, the 16f2.8 isn't what we needed. Been Fuji exclusively for years, leaving right now unless they change tack. The lenses are lauded, but they are the problem. We waited a decade for Nikon to do the compact-wide-and-tele-prime thing for APS-C then gave up. Thanks, always enjoy your reviews.
I'm also jumping....been waiting too long for an xh2.....what system are you going to ?
The dpreview team say they influenced Fuji's decision to make the 16f2.8. If they'd used their voice instead to promote an 18f2 without the fringes, I'd feel better. Even more so if Fuji replaced the disappointing 23f2 with something far better like the X-100V lens. I don't think it's about manufacturers, really, they all make good and less-good gear. The commonalities are that it's getting more expensive and the lenses are growing in size and cost (a trend that may not last). Though I admire, conversely, what Fuji are doing to break ground with 100mp and an MF system. I hoped Fuji would deliver on early promise, and offer improved small primes and reliable, small cameras. MFT offered the small lenses, but not the same stills IQ. Leica has always offered all this, but beyond most people's idea of proportional cost. I've reverted to an X-T20 plus 27, to consider next move.
Looks like another great bit of Fuji Glass. The part I'm looking forward to the most though is all of the XF18/2 lenses that are about to hit the USED market. :) I stupidly sold mine a few years ago and have been missing it's almost pancake compactness and it's somewhat unique signature. Will be perfect on my X-E4 with the Loawa 9/2.8 in one pocket and the XF35/1.4 in the other. :)
Covid pricing is insane right now. I picked up my 18 for $150, didn't enjoy it (it's great for close-ups and zone focused landscape/street but not so great for environmental portrait, which is my interest) and prices had shot up to over $350. I ended up trading it for three EF lenses, since I use a Fringer adapter and my trading counterpart was looking to go light and compact. He has a great pocket system with the 18 f2 and the 27 now, and I have the cheap STM 55-250 to use at F8 for landscapes and the 40 pancake for using with a future FF or GFX purchase. What I'm saying is you'll be able to buy yours back but wait a few months for prices to return to normal.
Luckily ttartisans is about to put out a 17mm f1.4 at 1/10th the price for the super low-rent fujistas among us. Weirdly, with those focusing issues, it'll likely be more appealing to video shooters even if the price of the Fuji is no object.
I have a question. I received this lens today. It feels like at least one of the elements is loose inside and when flipping the lens 90 degrees it drops back. However, once I turn the camera on I don’t see this behavior. Is this normal? And if yes, I’m interested to learn what’s causing this? Thanks.
It’s normal because it’s a linear motor, it disappears when you turn the camera ON.
This lens looks to be quite nice - but as Jordan points out is not so great for video use !
So it is a bit of a bummer for this who want to use this for video and photo all the same.
Otherwise sharpness, bookeh, low weight and compactness are there.
Only problem - the price is quite steep for a 18mm 1.4 APS-C lens.
Compare to something like FF 24mm f 1.8 , which is more versatile ( and even more so if the sensor enables to crop easily ) , then once again I wonder ....
What about this lense for astrophotography ?
I hear this is as good or better than a Q2, would you agree
Seems like an odd lens to release when the 16 1.4 is flawless.
Crazy price
Starting a petition to use Nocts as standard for weight measurement
Great review as always! But that is one of the saddest plants I've ever seen :O 4:49
I love the Sigma 16mm F1.4, and I think this lens is going to let me take Fuji more seriously. It costs twice as much, but ... if Sony doesn't make an APS-C camera with 10-bit color that can shoot 4K/30 without a 1.23x crop I guess I'll get something else.
Fuji already had an spectacular 16mm F1.4
So i don't get why this lens peaked your interest. Sony makes excellent lenses and bodies too but their focus is mainly on fullframe.
@@1barnet1 Yeah, you're right. I guess I was originally ignoring the Fuji 16mm because it's 2.5X as much as the Sigma 16mm 1.4. So nevermind. Sony/Panasonic/Canon are all much better choices. Fuji would need to have a really massive advantage in some area to make up for the price/selection disadvantage with their lenses.
1000$ is good price for apsc prime now?😀
Equivalent sony 28mm 2.0 is how much, 400$?
For first wide prime I wouldn't take this, 18mm f/2 makes way more sense being so compact, much cheaper and almost as capable.
Good for you!!!!
No where as capable...
@@drakedoggy103 really? Nowhere? What can you do with the f/1.4 where the f/2 would seriously struggle?
@@AntsAasma F1.4 is twice as bright as F2, so major boost for low light.
@@Lurreable on my experience rarely is a 1 stop reduction in ISO something that makes or breaks an image. Useful increase for someone trying to get every last bit of quality, sure. But worth it to recommend a twice as expensive, 3 times as heavy lens as the first wide prime? Not in my opinion.
Grate-est...
Chris really cracking me up in this one. Very punchy.
pentax pentax pentax
Where is the promised OM-D E-M10 IV review??????????????
Yeah .. I'll keep my 16 1.4 ... :D
I don't get the whole Noct thing, can someone explain?
@They Caged Non Thank you
I gotta know what the point of having a 16mm 1.4 and an 18mm 1.4 in the fuji lineup is?
Ones 16mm, the other 18mm
Awwww, no focus clutch? Kind of saddening... Beyond that though, it does seem like a rather nice lens.
Do private schools have longer rulers?
