  • When you are required to make a tie-in on your plate test, using something beyond a mark on your plate like soapstone will make sure you are right on the mark each time. Avoid using something conductive though to avoid unwanted arc strikes. Watch Jason Becker run through a CWB 1FG plate on CZcams • CWB Structural Welding...

Use Whiteout. Someone mentioned this on some video about a year ago and it beats Silverstreak Pencils for cutting and some Welding (depending on what you are doing obviously.)

What?? Why? Listen if youre worried about stopping in the middle of a coupon.. you are worried about the wrong thing..
Good rods, proper starts and stops, and you wont have porosity..
Doesnt matter where you start or stop.. start ahead of your stop, about an inch, and drop back, by the time the puddle is hot, it will be full size, it will burn the trash out, and then just roll over the start.. also dont just end the puddle. tapper out.. clean it up if youre allowed.. you wont have porosity, and you wont enven tell that you stopped.. ive done thousands of super critical welds, np with ut, rt, pt, or mt.. proper overlap, good tie ins, never fail a weld..

The test has a mandated area where you have to stop and then continue onto the run off tab, it's to test if you know how to start and stop

@guyfromgantz7976 AWS? Never had to do that for any position to cert for the American Welding Society. As long as your coupons were good, you passed.

@@Artisan1.618 D1.8 has a mandatory stop, but not sure how rare it is. Haven't done it myself just know about it.
