    - HP Z440 Motherboard (intel x99 equivalent) tinyurl.com/ycyr8r28 (helpful to get one advertised as bios updated to support v4 CPUs, or ask the seller if v4 CPUs are supported. If not, a v3 CPU will be needed to update the BIOS to support v4 broadwell Xeons)
    - GPU: RX 580 tinyurl.com/468twyk5 , GTX 1060 6gb tinyurl.com/562uxeh4 , or GTX 1070 for a little more money to get alot more performance tinyurl.com/3hkym65m (pay close attention to the listing details to make sure they aren't listed broken or for parts only under the wrong classification)
    - RAM - DDR4 ECC RAM 8gb sticks tinyurl.com/yckmm584

    -- Steps to make these clean boot: --
    -For the CPU fan header, align the 4 pin PWM CPU fan from your cooler to the 4 pins closest to the top edge of the motherboard and plug it in. You might need to pull the tab back on the fan header a little for the connector to seat, but that shouldn't require much if any force. See this image: imgur.com/a/l50GFoR
    -Use a 4-pin PWM fan on the Rear Fan PWM header
    -Plug a USB 3.0 front panel connector to the BLUE usb 3.0 header. If this doesn't work, move your front panel USB 3 header over to the black USB 3 header and try a USB 3 to female USB port adapter on the blue mobo USB 3 header (amzn.to/3kNxDs1). You can also try a USB 2.0 to USB 3.0 header adapter (up to you to plug your case's USB 2.0 front panel connector to this or to the motherboard directly. Whatever works) amzn.to/3wU9dji
    -For Power Switch, look for the big motherboard header with a bunch of pins below the bottom PCIE slot. The blank pin is the key. Go over to the right of the key by 1 pin, then place the PWR SW connector on that pin and the pin directly across from it. SEE ATTACHED IMAGE: imgur.com/a/upfc07Q
    -For Front HD Audio connector, line up the blank pin with the header adapter and plug it in. You'll see 2 remaining pins on the left side of the connector, closest to the back of the PC. Bridge those 2 pins. Using a jumper is easiest (amzn.to/3kNAPE1). SEE ATTACHED IMAGE: imgur.com/a/upfc07Q
    -DO NOT USE MORE THAN 4 STICKS OF RAM. I know these have 8 DIMMS but if you use more than 4 ram sticks, it will throw a MEMORY FAN boot error. ONLY USE 4 STICKS MAX.
    -Front panel USB 2.0 plugs right in to the USB 2.0 header, no workaround needed.

      Okay, I need a little help. I just did one of these builds with the Z440 motherboard and everything is running but I can't get it to boot. My SSD only shows under the UEFI driver section. I can't eliminate the 917 or 921 error, but that's fine. I need to know what to do in the bios to get this thing to boot. I've tried everything. Please add these steps to your videos. Before COVID I built two PC's with (and for) my two teenage daughters; both based on X79 at the time. I probably invested about $650 in each, including GPU (GTX980's at the time...since sold those off during the GPU price craze and managed to snag excellent deals on a used RTX 2080S and GTX 1080). These remain excellent builds, though they lack AVX2. I will be upgrading them to X99 w/ Xeon's near term (either 2678v3, as I have an extra one...or straight to 2696v3...which is hovering around $45 these days). Each upgrade would probably cost in the range of $140, offset by used parts sales. In total net cost will be around $100, I suppose. They can live with the rest...RGB cases...650W PSU's (Gold rated)...DDR3...CPU coolers (Air) each with 6x6pipe and dual 120mm fans. When Win10 reaches obsolescence...I'll work around that too...plenty of options there.

    the z440 is a great platform. with businesses always upgrading, there will never be a shortage of workstations to tinker with. my usecase for my z440 is for streaming, but i know i could do 1080p gaming on it as i've upgraded it with a 1650 oc.
    i do know to temper my expectations though as chris brought up a great point about core count. higher core counts doesn't always necessarily mean better. games have to be optimized for the hardware. in my case, i have the 12 core 24 thread xeon. while this is fantastic for workload and multitasking, there are games that won't be able to take advantage of those extra cores and threads, so won't run as well.

    Aside from gaming the broadwell Xeons are an even better value for multithreaded workloads. You can build a whole 40 core/80 thread rendering server with 128GB of ram for $650 that will score 30,000 on Cinebench while running silent at full workload and you can even bring down the price to $500 if you go for slightly lower specs.

    the one side of xeons for gaming which quite a few don't consider is the power consumption, sure the xeon might be cheap to buy and build a rig, but long term...longthy gaming sessions may potentially impact the electricity bill. I'm a Xeon owner also, but my xeon rig is for my office/work machine. I have a xeon e5-2650 v2 w/16gb ddr3-1333 ecc in quad channel. Running Linux Mint 20.3, my video out is just a palit geforce 8600gt 1GB. Built that rig in Oct of 2021. Snce it's a low workload oriented use, my electircity build hasn't been severely impacted even tho I use maybe 2 hours a day. If I were gaming tho..I'd likely look at e5 v3 or e5 v4 xeons and not the e5 v2, since the v2 xeons lack the avx2 instructions. But are okay for office/work machines.

    I have exactly the same configuration, Z440 but with e5-1650 v3 24GB ram and Rx 580, but in my opinion you could reduce the cost of this monster by using the original case with some LEDs for the effects, there is no point to build a budget system and use a seperate case and fan, at best that budget can be used to put a better graphics card.

    Great build but... im not a fan of telling people to use older GPU's though great they may be. 1080/ti are often in these but its both quite old and way power hungry in comparison to its performance.
    I put a RX 6600 in my HP Z420, (reserve gaming rig) replacing a very functional gtx 1650.
    Strong, modern and just 132W TDP!
    Its my first ATI card in 12 years and i couldnt recommend it more!

    • @CoalitionGaming
      @CoalitionGaming  Před 9 měsíci

      People wanting new or used GPUs old or not is all down to preference anyways. Though the RX 580 feature in this build isn't too crazy in power usage, especially compared to a 1080ti. Nowadays the used market is so good that going up to something like a 1070, 5700XT, or even a RTX 3070 (though that may be a little overkill) is recommendable. But for people who wouldn't even buy used... id say it's worthwhile to spend a little extra on an RX 6700 over a 6600, but only for those 6700 models under $300 (there are a few online). Some things are worth stretching budget for.

    Nice content! I am a geek at heart with a fetisch for server hardware. So now when my company needs to get a server, I am scouring the webz to find content
    But, it is really hard, some people show budget builds for gaming using xeons, or some people build systems for crazy amounts of money. But how would you build to get the most cores and clockspeeds for a virtualization server using 2nd hand stuff? Of couse usage matters, but in general.
    Buying finished branded servers is really expensive, so I was thinking of getting just a cpu, motherboard and memory. But where is the most bang for the buck? Latest generation entry level, former gen mid, or like older high end ones?
    How would you build a virtualization server for a budget of say 2 000 dollars or euro? Storage does not need to be included as this is not in a production environment and we have a nas just like you 👌

      That will still be able to do well sure but I wouldn't pay very much for it. That e3-1275v2 is a lower and older platform (and only 4 cores/8 threads) than what I showed in this video (e3-1275v2 is 3rd Gen aka ivy bridge) on the more consumer oriented socket of that time. A 970 will struggle with the games you listed, I would aim for at least a GTX 1070, GTX 1080, or Radeon 5700 XT since they are way affordable secondhand nowadays. Even GTX 1080tis if the budget can stretch a bit more.

    GPU: MSI GeForce GTX 1080 AERO 8GB OC
    SSD: 256GB Turbo drive + 2 x 1TB SSD Crucial MX500
    i found the E5 - 2687W V4 local for : €60 ish (around 70$)
    The RAM was cheap on ebay indeed: in sets 2x 16GB around 25€ so total around 75€ (around 85$)
    THE 2 SSD's came together for as low as €75.
    Its a not that low budget anymore but around 400-500 € i was really happy with the end result and performance! I have chosen the 2687W v4 over the 1650 V4 because i also use alot of the Adobe Programs and render alot of footage, so i needed a bit of a hybrid built combined with goodish single core & multi core performance.

      i understand, i was just wondering about the 1620v4 since it's a 4 core part with less cache, and the gpu scaling (it seems to me the rx 580 is a bottleneck whilst still being the best budget option at the moment)

    • @CoalitionGaming
      @CoalitionGaming  Před rokem +2

      @@damasterpiece08 for the low costs of these parts, I wouldn't consider the 1620 when better CPUs can be had for not much more. My board did come with a 1620v3 but I never intended to test with that. It will definitely come in handy if I do more of these to update the bios for v4 compatibility though. Maybe in a future video I'll run a few tests with the 1620v3 vs whatever CPU I upgrade with before building the system out and see how it stacks up there.
      My guess is that it won't be leaps and bounds better than the 1620 did in the previous z440 video I mentioned. There wasn't a huge performance difference in CPUs during these generations. I rocked an i7-3770 then an e5-1650v2 from 2013 to 2019 for example. With a 660ti then 770 then 970 then 980ti. Always ran everything I wanted with good results.

    Xeon is cheap but it is cheap because Xeons are in 90% of cases used so why not to buy used Ryzen or i5 CPUs ? With them you will not have typical for Xeon CPUs troubles like RAM issue , motherboards that does not support some GPU models and low clock speed. Xeon is mainly for hobbyists and not for casual users.

    • @CoalitionGaming
      @CoalitionGaming  Před 10 měsíci

      Used Ryzen is definitely the way to go if you can find them cheap enough, thats for sure. Ryzen really put an end to good used Xeon builds...but I've never had RAM issues ever with any Xeon build lol. Ryzen on the other hand...especially first and 2nd gen? Yeah lol. As far as the Xeons go, have put 3000 RTX series in 1st gen Core-i series era Xeon builds with no issue, so not sure what you mean by not supporting some GPU models. Never had an issue there either. Low clock speeds? Yep, thats why I recommend the ones with higher clock speeds, because there are definitely ones with similar clock speeds to 1st and 2nd gen Ryzen, even if the architecture is slower. Definitely for hobbyists, for sure, but they also work for casual users just fine. Nothing what you said is really an issue, especially just going with a workstation tower and adding a GPU. Their value isnt what they use to be though, but they are still plenty good for anyone.

      Actually that chip has a default all-core turbo of 3.4ghz, which makes the E5-2667v4 a better choice for an 8-core since that one has a 3.5ghz all-core turbo and costs less. The 3.8ghz turbo you are citing is single core max turbo, not all core.

    • @CoalitionGaming
      @CoalitionGaming  Před rokem

      Well the "build list" version of this I did without the case and fancy RGB dress up stuff can be had under $300 that way. Makes it alot harder for the stuff you recommend to be justified if a person is on a strict budget. That said, I just pieced together a budget system using all new parts with a i3-10100f ($75), 16gb of RAM, RX 6600 (same price as 1660ti, but faster), and everything...came to $575. Great price/performance sure but whats way over your quoted $450. 1660 Supers seem to be around $160 - $180 on ebay, so lets go best case scenario and choose $160. Thats minus 69 so $575 - $69 = $506 which is still more than $400 or $450. Now compare either $500 or $575 to $300 or $400 and you see...it ain't old rubbish. But im with you, if I could afford to spend the extra I definitely would. Thats alot of extra performance for not alot of extra money. But not everyone has that comfort.

    • @CoalitionGaming
      @CoalitionGaming  Před rokem

      Sounds like you caught a good sale, even if buying what you got secondhand. Lowest I found a 10100F right now was $75. Found a Z590 board for $80 which was a hell of a price though. Both new. You didn't specify whether you were talking about used or new parts, but I did at least check used GPU prices in my calculations with the parts you mentioned. But again, take the RGB dress up off this build and you can get in under $300 and while its easy to justify spending the extra to get up to the price point you claim for the parts you claim, not everyone has that comfort. In regards to not making sense to build new products and go old Xeon CPU...that didn't really happen here either so im not sure what video you're referencing. There are a few new products in this build like the case, PSU, and cooler but thats it. And those parts easily carry over to future builds with better parts.

      That's a great value system you put together there! I linked the GTX 1070 in the description as an alternative GPU option for more performance too, and even mentioned how to pare down this build to get more value out of it and in the video about the z440 workstation (linked at end of video and in description) directly show how to get a better deal if it utilizes the prebuilt original more wholly. That CPU is a good starter one to get going at a good price, but like I said in this video, every little bit of frequency helps when you're at a generational disadvantage by going with one of these CPUs. Extra advantage of going with a z440 board tho is the proven reliability of these beasts (and it does have USB 3.0 on front and back). Could be important to some people, peace of mind is hard to measure the value of. Have built with Chinese boards like you've mentioned before with no issues so I'd have no problem personally with em. But it's way more interesting to me to adapt these HP Z workstations into these value rigs.
