      @gregoryhayes7569 Před měsícem +4

      The way they present stimpaks in the show (and what you'd assume from the name) is that they actually aren't "cures", and they don't "fix" injuries. Rather, they're a drug that temporarily stimulates the body, probably with adrenaline, allowing you to ignore the injury until you can get actual medical attention.

Maximus is only a squire to the Knight, think of Medieval times. Squires were a Knight's servant. The thing he inhaled is jet. It's a drug in the game. It's essentially amphetamine, in fact it's based on the original form of amphetamine from the 1930s which was an OTC inhaler like in the game. It was legal until it was banned in 1959 (banned as in not OTC). So the dude is essentially vapiing a huge dose of amphetamine (marketed as Adderall today in the US and dextroamphetamine in the rest of the world (dextro if a stronger isomer with less side).
    There's also ultrajet which is methamphetamine.
    The games were originally going to call the drugs by their real names. But the Australian nanny state said the game would be banned (this was back during Fallout 1) because it called the one drug morphine and they said it's prompting drug use. So they renamed it Med-X along with our drugs. Except alcoholic drinks lol because that's somehow ok lol.
    E.g. Buffout is a testosterone ester and increases your strength, endurance, and health.
    It actually benefited the games in the end in multiple ways, but I won't explain how as those are some good spoilers.

The Brotherhood of Steel is one of the Enclave's major adversaries in the games

  • @Aviertje
    @Aviertje Před měsícem +18

    Some basic things that aren't spoilers but explain your confusion / lack of knowledge:
    - Every game has its own storyline. While they almost all start in vaults in some form or shape, they tend to be in wildly different areas of the US, and every vault is quite distinct in its own way. The location / story of this particular vault and show is similarly unique and not a 1:1 copy of the plot of the original games, but its own entire journey.
    - The introduction of Lucy is basically a homage to character creation in the games, where you in some sort of way decide the strengths of your character based on how you want to play the game. Playstyles include characters who like sneaking around, those who like to blow stuff up and those who just like to talk things out with people, so there's skills like lockpicking, speech for social graces, etc. Everything remotely 'not the world around you' in the games is accessed through the pipboy on your characters wrist: in the game, it is used to identify how healthy you are, the things you had on you, the map of the local area, radio stations you pick up and so on. Think of it as a modern day phone with a geiger counter than can't make calls and has the tech-level of the 50s, and you've nailed it.
    - Ghouls are one of the groups of mutated creatures people on the surface turned into due to the radiation. They can be roughly be classified into two categories: those who were merely affected in the physical sense (basically ugly-ass zombies that are bullet sponges), and those who were driven mad by the change and turned feral in the process, trying to kill and eat anything that moves. The existence of the latter causes immense racism to the former group who can technically still function in normal human society just fine. Since all games are situated in different parts of the US, there's different 'flavors' of ghouls in every game that can probably be blamed on different nukes with different amounts of radiation and local fauna affecting the change, so if you know ghouls from the games, they may not necessarily by a total stylistic match.
    Long story short: while it is the same world as the games, there is a huge amount of freedom this show has compared to other game adaptations in terms of the story they'd like to tell, and they make full use of it despite the inclusion of tons of references to the games.

    In the Fallout universe the bombs fell October 23, 2077 Saturday morning. The first nuke hit the east coast at 945am and the west coast right after. For 2 hours bombs continuously fell on the US and China. One can only imagine the hell on Earth those 2 hours must've felt and looked like. Although the show changed the time of the bombing, still the same day just later on in the day, it still did amazing in capturing the horror one may have witnessed that day.
    Ghouls are just mutated human beings who were exposed to massive amounts of radiation all at once. They arent immortal but rather they age at an incredibly slow rate. they can live for decades longer and some even hundreds of years like Walter Goggins character, who is the oldest known Ghoul in the show which is why he is so known and why he is referred to as ''The Ghoul". In the games you meet alot of ghouls who were alive when the bombs fell. The one downside to being a ghoul, besides looking like a walking corpse, is the fear of turning Feral. Ghouls brains deteriorate due to the amount of radiation in their bodies and will continue to deteriorate until they have no control or sense of who they are anymore. To put it simply, when a ghoul goes feral youre essentially dealing with a mindless zombie and the person that you once knew is gone. The show changed the lore on ghouls and ferals a bit but nothing too drastic

    The West Coast Brotherhood of Steel is more like a quasi-religious paramilitary order compared to their East Coast counterparts. This is why you see a lot of religious type ceremonies and symbolism here. You see this in Fallout 1 and 2 since they take place in the West Coast.

    Ghoulification is one of two things that can happen to someone who gets heavily irradiated in the Fallout world. Most people during the war and the immediate aftermath just died of radiation sickness. But some people turned into ghouls. Now, they appear to be a huge number, just because the surviving population is so small as a whole - maybe 10 million people across the former USA. Ghouls are immortal in the games, unless they get killed. But, a lot of ghouls lost their minds to the radiation, becoming feral ghouls, which are a standard monster type you have to fight in the games. Survivors often call feral ghouls zombies, but intelligent ghouls take offense at that.

    Now you are young, to those of us growing up during The Cold War that intro is what we feared would happen- every day. But we lived our lives. When I teach my The History of The Cold War classes, I always start by showing them a five minute video of nuclear explosions with eerie music, to make your generation understand what it all was- and what you will have to get used to again with Putoloni's sabre-rattling (though he is too much of a coward to do it). During the Cold War, the USSR was planning to open the war by dropping 600+ merely on my little Denmark.
    The game is set in an alternative timeline, where the transistor was never invented, so everything used vacuum-tubes like early computers. And thus the timeline starts diverging from ours in the year after WW2, and progress is generally much slower. But there is also no Cuban Missile Crisis, Long Island, etc, and no reckoning with its past, so the US carries on in a sort of Truman-Eisenhower Superamerica with nuclear powered cars, etc. But in the 21st century fossil fuels and other resources starts running out, and The Resource Wars starts; where Europe, Africa and The Middle East is torn apart, and China invades Alaska to get the last remaining oil resource on the planet. And in 2077... Boom.
    And oh yea, the US turns authoritarian semi-Fascist, a bit like Starship Troopers. The Brotherhood has fallen back in that tradition after a couple of good and humanitarian leaders, and become the SS of the Fallout Universe.
    Anyway, think of the game and series as set in a sort of retro-futuristic post apocalypse, IE a future as imagined in the fifties, but then add a nuclear exchange of superpowers. In the games you find all those tragic and dark stories as you explore the Wasteland, the series show them, but both do a very good job of what good SciFi should; holding up a dark mirror to humanity- and with Fallout it is really dark.

    incase anyone wanted to know, nukes will usually not disable your vehicle or electronics, especially if the detonation is on or near the ground, only nuclear devices detonated high in the Ionosphere will potentially cause an electrical cascade that will burn out sensative electronics and cables, so if you see a bright flash near space, then more than likely it is an emp, in the fallout universe, the tech level is still transistors and tubes, which are pretty resilient to EMP's

    So a bit of non-spoiler-y background information that doesn't really get explained in the show: The Fallout world basically diverges from ours in the 1940s. Transistor-based technology (specifically micro-transistors, the things that make computers and any compact advanced electronics possible) is never invented. This is why everything is big and chunky and looks like it was designed in the 50s. Instead nuclear technology advances rapidly and becomes part of many everyday household items (the cars, for example, are all nuclear powered). This is why everything has a 1950s retro sci-fi look (and because it evokes that weird 1950s vintage optimism mixed with the ever present threat of nuclear war).
    Lucy is modelled on a prototypical player character from the franchise. In many of the games you start out as a vault dweller who has to venture to the surface for one plot contrivance or another (in the very first game it was because the water purification system was broken and you had to go find a part, so the show did a bit of a nod to that). The montage of her explaining her skills is kind of like the character setup where you choose your stats and skills.
    The syringes you see in the show are Stim-paks which are the game's major source of healing. This is one thing that I like in the show. It treats itself like it is the game. When you use a Stim-pak in the game, it heals every thing instantly. Even broken bones.
    The Brotherhood of Steel is a faction that was born out of remnants of the US military based around a pseudo-religious, militaristic tech cult. That's probably kind of obvious given their organization, but there is a direct connection back to the pre-war era, and most of their tech is ex-military from that era, just salvaged and maintained. Depending on the game/location (the games are set in several different locations around the US, with the originals set on the west coast, and the newer games on the east coast, and New Vegas set in, well, Vegas) they can range from fascistic antagonists to chivalric allies depending on the chapter. Much like the medieval knights they're based on.
    The other big faction to get a mention in this episode was The Enclave. Where the BoS are remnants of the US military, The Enclave are the remnants of the US government along with anyone else they deemed worthy of surviving the apocalypse - the best and brightest of science and industry. They're a tad... elitist, as you can probably imagine, looking down on most of the other survivors, and preferring to interact and manipulate events from the shadows or a distance. Unlike the BoS who focus on collecting and preserving old world tech, The Enclave continued to innovate and advance. Stimpaks, the thing Lucy injects herself with, are the main healing item in the game. So you'll see a bit of video game logic here where a shot will cure any basic wound. And unlike a bunch of other video game adaptations, this show is actually considered canon within the same world as the games. So that's just kinda neat. Keep up the good work.

  • @sealofapproval637
    @sealofapproval637 Před měsícem

    Nuclear weapons do release an EMP (electro magnetic pulse) upon detenation which will fry most complex eletronics within the blast radius. This is seldom a major problem as anything containing complex electronics also gets exploded to hell and back by the rest of the nuke. But it is a valid point that a car (especially a complex- circitry-reliant nuclear powered car of the type in the Fallout universe) might not be functional in the immediate aftermath of a bomb dropping. The EMP would hit it first but before the blast reaches it so, in Cooper's situation, the horse might have been the best option over a car... still wouldn't be enough (unless safety is VERY close by) but the point is valid.
