(1393) Review: Polaris Rake Kit from UKBumpKeys

  • čas pƙidĂĄn 13. 11. 2018
  • I had a chance to take an early look at the new UKBumpKeys Polaris kit, so this review is on a Wednesday instead of the usual Saturday. Overall, the Polaris contains every possible rake that you can imagine, all made from tough stainless steel measuring 0.023" or 0.6mm thick. PERFECT for rakes, especially when they find themselves in new picker's hands because they are tough enough to stand up to some serious abuse.

    Haha! Impressive, and I like the touch of raking information. When friends ask me about nuances, I wonder what they're talking about until their questions get better and figure my hands know a lot more about picking than they've shared with my brain. Going through all the rakes on a lock vulnerable to attack is something I do too. Since I was looking at new rakes the other day and I like the case, I might have to try these. Gotta agree with the critique about tensioners, but since I have a crapload, it shouldn't be a problem. Fun review!

    There's another technique I call The Grump's Shove, where you use a pry bar but you insert it into the BOK. Used thus it provides excellent control, and better rotational tension than your typical L-wrench, while not exerting so much force against the cylinder wall, thus reducing binding. It's ideal for raking. You can even see it demonstrated in Sparrows demo video for their original Mace Picks set. Not a huge fan of those particular tools, but watch The Grump's Shove being demonstrated, and you'll see that including a pry bar with a raking set was no mistake. ;)

      And by the way, the Petersen No-teeth Pry Bar, and Lite versions are particularly well suited to this task, though the standard Pry Bar Lite is also good. The .050 is less often the right fit, but still fairly common.

    Thanks to you B. Bill, I wanted to get into lock picking, and found it very satisfying when you get that first one open, its like crack. You want more. Also thanks to your reviews, I have spent $100k on picks, and with these slow ass shipments... I should receive packages till I retire or die hahaha. Bought this set.. I actually recently got rakes to work. Been single picking for a long while, had no confidence in a rake. I think that should be first now... then SPP.. learning from the master ;-)

    Hi Bill,
    I have been going back watching your older and newer vids for a bit now you keep it fun and interesting. I have learned alot just from listening to you and looking. Before i just started and tried what i saw on diffrent channels. However not much success. Now thanks to you, i usually have not alot of problems opening padlocks! Next up is,some older doorlocks my father had lying around. A whole new chapter and challenge ! I have faith i will succeed after watching and trying enough, experience does not come cheap!
    I do have a question, i am using a combination of 2 REALLY cheap picks. Wich i am starting to notice, I am a Eu person, Belgium if that is also a difference for locks. After watching some of your reviews i’m not sure wich better set to buy, to get more serious. The ones i found that i can buy and you reviewed are Southord picks specifically the C801 and the C2010 for my learning and usage what would be the better choice? C2010 is like kinda where my budget stops, if there is a kit that is better for not much more i might go the extra bit, i hope you or someone here could help me out!
    Thank you for the great videos, tutorials, reviews they really help me get an idea of this world!
    Thank you !

      @johnmurray4645 Pƙed 5 lety

      The Dangerfield praxis kit is great I just purchased it comes in two thickness for around 50 euro plus two top of the key way tensioners just needs some shrink tubing(Aldi 3euro) on the handles you can use a lighter to heat it on . Bill has a video on it and uses them all the time.

    • @josuelservin2409
      @josuelservin2409 Pƙed 5 lety +1

      I think you already got it down, the c801 looks like a nice practical set, then just upgrade it with one or two bogota's and top of the keyway tensioners, having the right tension is often more important than having 50 different picks.

    • @flairder
      @flairder Pƙed 5 lety

      Josuel Servin i do not have the set yet wondering wich of those 2 i woul purchase maybe tht are fit for Europe padlocks and doors. I am open to diffrent suggestions like the one made here by someone else, this is just what i have gathered. Also struggling with why 1 and not the other i know there is a price diffrence and diffrent tools but i admit to say i don’t know nearly enough to trust myself with that decision, i simply have not got the knowledge. Thank you four the tip i will keep it in mind.

    • @flairder
      @flairder Pƙed 5 lety

      john murray will look into this thanks!

    • @josuelservin2409
      @josuelservin2409 Pƙed 5 lety +1

      I always recommend the SouthOrd PXS-14, because is cheap, durable and good enough for beginners, ask your friends and family for old and unused locks and buy a few cheap ones. Once you tray that and play enough you may notice your first kit is not the best for certain applications, perhaps the locks are in euro profile and with paracentric keyways or perhaps you want to tray your ability with a challenge lock, for those advanced applications that Dangerfield praxis kit with those .015" or the C2010 with that variety may be great, but they come with clear limitations, they are fragile and if mishandled are easily bended and/or broken.
      So don't sweat it to much, go for for something cheap but good, and learn with practice what you may need and like, I for example love to make my own picks and teach my friends and family about the sport, so find what you really like and build from there, the community is always here to help.

    Have you seen that master lock is using ball bearing locking mechanisms in the no3? We use them for LOTO at work and I was putting one on a valve the other day and it had ball bearings instead of the little tabs like they usually do.

    Bill,
    how can you review a 65$ rake set on a Master lock ? it just doesn't give them any credibility,
    if I was going to buy a rake set I would like to see them open one or more "proper" locks,
    that Master lock would have fell open if you had shouted at it, come on Bill, we expect better from you.

    I have been kinda paying attention to the "you won" section on the locklab website and I have noticed some people win multiple times. I am starting to wonder how random that drawing really is.

      I do see the same names pop up quite often, that's kinda why I don't bother with the giveaways anymore

    Guess I'm saying..you play around with them before the review...use a naughty bucket lock with a new cool pick set and show us the skill and how might these new tools hold up as well
