    Nice choice. I would recommend you listen to Sweet Thing-Candidate-Sweet Thing (Reprise) from the same album. One of the best things Bowie ever did IMHO.

    Like many of bowie’s albums, this is best taken in as an entire album. The song that follows (sweet thing/candidate..) is one of his finest moments….and one of his best vocal performances ever. The song is like a movie in itself. No one writes like that. For my money…greatest artist of our time

    David originally conceived the Diamond Dogs album as a stage musical version of George Orwell's novel, 1984. Orwell's estate, specifically Mrs Orwell, would not grant permission to David for the project, so he salvaged what he could and created this album.

    As a drummer, you may want to get to know the drummer here- Aynsley Dunbar. He started with John Mayall and Jeff Beck, auditioned with Hendrix, played with Zappa, was a founding member of Journey, etc., etc.

    Every album from Bowie is a completely different trip. He not only changed characters, he changed sounds. Every time I'd get a new Bowie album I would be momentarily disappointed that it didn't sound like his last, which had become a favorite. Then, after a listen or two, the new album would "open up to me" and become my favorite... and the cycle would begin again. lol

    If you can, David Live at the Tower Theatre in Philadelphia is the best live album (IMO) he made. Sweet Thing, Candidate, Sweet Thing Reprise is song that has dueling guitar and saxophone in it. Check it out. It’ll be worth the trip. Aladdin Sane is another great album. Early 70’s was Bowie’s best work, again, IMO. 🖖🍻

    George Orwells widow refused to give Bowie permission to do a musicsl based on his classic book 1984. So Bowie wrote Diamond Dogs as a dystopean future in decay, set in Hunger City, and used some of the songs intended for the musical on the second side - We Are The Dead, 1984, Big Brother.
    The cover is a gatefold sleeve. You need to see the whole picture, not just the front half. It was originally baned in the USA and a certain part had to be airbrushed out for release!

    One of these days you need to check out Bowie's Pin Ups album. He does covers of groups he used to hear in clubs that influenced him. The Who, Pink Floyd, and others.

    Glad to see you are reacting to something from Diamond Dogs. Love your reactions to Bowie's works so far. This album is probably in my top 3 Bowie's album, right after Low and Station to Station. If you plan to proceed with this album, please do the next 3 tracks (Sweet Thing/Candidate/Sweet Thing (Reprise)) together as they are meant to be a suite. Bowie delivered a equally stunning and haunting vocal performance with that.

    • @anthonymckeever6626
      @anthonymckeever6626 Před 5 měsíci +2

      Definately avoid any streaming service that puts a pause between the 3 songs in the suite, as they run together on the album. One of Bowies greatest vocal performances.

    The concept is a 1984-like dystopian world ---hence the songs "1984", "We Are the Dead" and "Big Brother". I love that David's guitar and sax are dirty sounding....which really matches the concept.

    I remember my older sister had this album, and went to Philly to see Bowie on this tour. Bowie was a superstar in the UK at the time, but he was still seen as some kind of weird alien by many in America. But this album helped boost his cred in the states, at least on the east coast, because of how it blended Velvet Underground grime with blue eyed soul.

    This album is one of Bowie’s most unpolished albums.(love it) Perhaps because he does so many of the instruments himself. Normally he would bring in someone better than himself, and not doing lead guitar eg.

      Unpolished? Can't agree with that. Excellent production throughout and Bowie's dirty guitar mix (almost Keith Richards like) adds to the overall dark tone to the album.

    Although Bowies "alternative" 1984 production after the Orwell estate rejected his plans, this album (and title song in particular) always reminds me of the Charlton Heston movie Omega Man. Set in post apocalyptic USA where Heston lives at the top of a building to avoid getting caught by the infected population. Anyway, Sweet Thing is a true masterpiece. Give it a go!
