    "4c" coily and my routine is pretty simple! weekly I wash and condition, detangle with a tangle teezer, then i set my hair in a wash n go with a base and topper botanical gel. Or I use a cream and mousse if I'm doing a twisted style. I sit under the hooded dryer for up to an hour and voila Im done for the week. every 10-12wks i go and get a curly cut. My hair is the healthiet and simplest it's ever been!

    I feel like wearing my hair in wash and go’s helped me embrace my hair in a way I never had before. I had always stretched my hair to the max. But allowing my hair to shrink and seeing that it can still grow in that state was an awesome experience. Currently I’ve been experimenting with African threading, not for stretching, but for protecting my ends. There’s a way of wrapping it that looks like twists. Ive also been wearing head wraps, especially at home. Just to give my hair an extra layer of protection. Thy have satin bonnets that resemble headties/head wraps.

      That's awesome to hear! I want to incorporate wash n gos. Into my styling. Probably in the spring/ summer time as things warm up. When I was younger I tried threading myself but I wasn't good at it. If I knew a stylist in Canada 🤣 I would try again.

    This was my struggle. I had waist length hair that was fine strands but lots of them and they have lots of natural kinks and bends in the strands so it’s not easy to care for as a lazy natural because it tangles very easily. I had to wash in sections, prepoo with a detangle and sometimes detangle each section after washing before styling so that I could get a smoother two strand twist. It also gets splits and fairy knots, mostly splits when glow dried not when curly, but fairy knots didn’t care if I was blow dried, curly or flat ironed. I started blow drying my hair to be more manageable but that was probably the worst decision I made, but I went further and started getting it flat ironed 1 time a month. No heat in between. I still wore it up and did not pull it tight or in buns. I wore updos, but my edges still didn’t like being pulled up and it started thinning. I finally just did a big chop because my hair had thinned out so much. Not washing my hair weekly os what did it. I can protective style but I have to keep it that way. I can’t wear it out daily for work. All of that manipulation got to be too much when I started blow drying and flat ironing it. 🤦🏽‍♀️ It’s growing back now. Thankfully I work remote so two strand twists will be my forever go to and a headband wig when out or on a zoom meeting.

    • @MzKegz
      @MzKegz  Před 2 lety +2

      OMG yes you get it. I'm havent reached waist length. I have no clue if it possible for me, but I need to figure out how to properly care for my hair before I get there. When I started my natural hair journey protective styles were my life you never saw my hair down. Only on occasions, washed my hair once 1-2 times a month. Only wore loose twists. I think working from home has changed the way I care for my hair too, I'm not stressing about the next cute style.. I'm in a satin scarf or twist or experimenting with a wash go.

      May I ask what products you were using? Not wearing hair out to me means a styling or a damaged hair issue. Heat damage is not the only kind of damage there is a cuticle that is unnaturally raised due to damage seems unmanageable and unstyleable too. Sometimes vitamin and mineral issues cause hair to grow porous. If you had thinning that means there is hormonal issues. I am very gentle and did not even use brushes on my edges or edge control but still I noticed they were a little lighter even just doing two strand twists and the hair didn't fully grow in until I went to the Dr and found out I have female pattern hair loss even with thick hair, that many consider long, and it affects my texture and growth rate in the areas on the head sensitive to hormonal fluctuations. Using rosemary/peppermint to help with the effects of the hormones in carrier oils has helped but I also have a lot of vitamin issues that caused texture change. Thyroid can also affect texture and edges. Knowing the basis of styling has helped a lot though.

    Work through it sis. Don't get locs. You're gonna miss your open hair.
    My routine is detangle with a product and wide tooth comb, shampoo in sections, optional deep conditioning, but always a leave in before I dry my hair with a blowdry and just my hands no combs and brushes. Then I seal it with grease. I put it in chunky twists to style it or a flexi rod set. My washday is every two weeks. I'm going to keep on blowdrying because it's laying my cuticles flat just the way I like them. I also don't want to risk hygral fatigue and split ends with water sitting in my hair too long. My hair also looses moisure faster if I airdry. I don't care about slip in a deep conditioner anymore because I don't detangle my hair again at that stage. This has opened up my options to deep conditioners that I thought didn't work for me before. Any deep conditioner that didn't soften my hair before is now my best friend. That tells me it's more inert and won't blast my cuticles open to deliver moisture. I like moisture giving ingredients to coat my hair shaft, not penetrate it. Research film forming humectants. You want those in your leave in. And you possibly could skip the deep conditioning if you find a good one.
    Right now I'm experimenting with tresseme conditioners and Africa's best olive oil leave in as my detanglers. The olive oil leave in is winning. I lose less hair and it doesn't make my hair too wet, but the tresseme is cheaper. Gonna mix it with virgin olive oil next washday to see what happens.

    I've been wearing wash and gos exclusively since October. I got another cut in December but it is growing like a weed. I know no styles make it grow faster but I'm retaining more because:
    I am embracing my shrinkage, only detangling with conditioner and only gently fluffing it to shape it(otherwise it looks a helmet).
    The only heat I use is diffuser and hover it around my head just to dry the outside never putting it on my roots. Life-changing to be able to embrace my natural tight curls and waves. Embracing your shrinkage sounds fantastic.

      Conditioner and add more water you want it to be foamy. Go in with your finger first pulling hair apart without raking. Then if you are going in with a comb or detangling brush you've already prepped your hair. If you're Gently stretch hair going for tips to root. If you're feeling your hair tug add more conditioner and more water.
      It used to take me about 30 minutes to detangle now I'm down to abourlt 15 minutes. Just take your time. Best of luck! I hope this helps. Also follow Blackgirlcurls they were a bug help for me.

    My natural hair regiment lately consists of washing once a week. Typically on Friday I will deep condition during the day and let the conditioner sit for a few hours. If I am feeling extra I might do a quick DIY hair mask with avocado, aloe vera, honey, and bananas. After I rinse my hair, I will put leave in conditioner or thick reparative conditioner and braid my hair into 2 braids and try to maintain the braids for the entire week. I might take the braids out and style an up do depending on if I have plans but after I get home I will re braid my hair. I re-fresh the braids every night with a liquid leave in conditioner and lock it in by oiling my scalp and strands with Black Castor Oil. Then I wrap my hair with a scarf and leave my hair alone. I think this is pretty simple and this is what works for me and my hair!

    I'm in that stage where I want locs (specifically microlocs). I've been researching for a year already but my wallet is not agreeing with this decision. Until it does I am sticking to my natural hair routine. I wash my hair every week or every 2 weeks. I do double shampoo, conditioner to detangle w/ comb (my hair is too cumbersome to stick to finger detangling solely but I'm super gentle), deep condition for 30 minutes (switched this year to using ayurvedic enhancing ingredients to my favorite deep conditioners), rinse and style. My number 1 style twists and I use a leave-in conditioner, oil, mango butter/any hair butter to seal in the moisture. This keeps my hair moisturized for at least a week. If my scalp gets itchy I'll spray with water/ scalp spray and oil it. I trim my hair when I notice single strand knots or thinning ends. Sometimes I will do cornrows, but very rarely.

      @MzKegz  Před 2 lety +2

      Thank you for sharing your routine! I like microlocs but for me I'd need them slightly bigger (maybe my pinky finger). Money for getting locs is a factor I have been totally "forgetting" (ignoring), when the time comes I'll make it happen LOL. We have similar routines, Twist are my staple too which is why people tell me I should just get locs. My problems seems to be I don't stay consistent with routines anymore. I know once I create a routine and follow it strictly, I'll be on track again.

    • @HoneeyBee3

      I wanted micro locs too! Slightly bigger though like maybe the size of 4 to 7 micro locs,or the size of mini crochet faux locs. I havent found much info about the retwist process though if I go with the micros. I see most people retwist their own locs if the roots dont grow out too much. So, since I can do my own hair, I'm wondering if the same can be done with micro locs, or if you need a professional retwist to avoid excessive pulling & thinning at the roots since they are thinner 🤔. Cuz the cost of the retwist is almost as much as the micro locs itself 😆.

    Instead of locs or loose hair, try the in-between, just keeping your hair in mini braids (no added hair), it's like locs you can take out, instead of retwisting to incorporate new growth, take the hair down and braid it again. mini braids can be washed and conditioned, and other treatments can be done without ruining the hair style too much unlike twists.
    This is what I do, stretch my hair with jumbo braids, mini braids for 3-4 weeks, wash and moisturise weekly, repeat. It's has be kind of mini to retain the versatility of loose hair/locs.

I do this every week because my scalp drives me crazy on day 7. I'm too lazy to stretch my hair and wear it stretched especially in this winter weather! I usually keep my hair wrapped up in satin for most of the year. Yes I wear headwraps/headscarfs/turbans to work and on dates and to formal events. I rotate treatments between Olaplex, Protein and Moisture. I moisturise daily which is spraying my hair with leave in mist in the morning and rubbing a small amount of leave cream on my hair at night. For reference my hair is above shoulder length, high porosity, high density, ultra-fine, ultra-dry type 4c strands. Hair longer than shoulder length is bicep and tricep training work! It will be interesting to see if “embracing the shrinkage” helps your hair regain thickness & length, because I fear a shrunken ‘fro may lead to a lot more tangles when it comes to wash day (& thus more breakage). I don’t use heat, but stretched styles (twist-outs, braid-outs, etc) seem to keep me from having ever-longer de-tangling sessions. But yes, I understand the struggle: Once our type 4 gets beyond shoulder length, it takes a *ridiculous* amount of time to care for - whether stretched or not.

This is actually the fastest my hair has ever grown I feel like, or least it's the best legnth retention phase I've ever experienced.. Either way, the lack of knots has lead to an ability to wash my hair a couple times a week because no intense detangling sessions.. And my hair has gone from ear legnth to my neck/just past my chin in just 6months.. I also notice that because my hair can hold so much water, its naturally elongating.. I don't think I could go back to the work and effort associated with twist/braid outs.. These 1.5hr wash, style, dryer sessions start to finish are everything.. And I'm able to just shake and go my hair the days between washing.. I really couldn't go back to the high maintenance of wearing my hair in styles beyond its natural curl pattern..

There is a beauty to locs I hope you explore not for yourself but just to explore.

      @MissJeriB Před 2 lety +3

      @MissJeriB Před 2 lety +2

      @@MzKegz I first started off with small comb coils and then combed them out due to a lack of confidence and microaggressions. Then I went to loc extensions which was not great due to the density of the hair AND parting ratio. I ended up cutting them off two years ago after growing my locs for three years. I spent a lot of money but went to someone slightly cheaper which was evident in the work. Then I got a small set of comb coils but did not have a middle part, had holes in my locs from their improper techniques and ended up combing my locs out. Now I have DIY microlocs. WHICH has been great for me.
      I give my background to say this:
      1) Not everyone can be in your head. ( I really wish I just stucked with my very first set.)
      2) Its going to be rough, don't let people's comments deter you.
      3) Embrace Frizz.
      4) DO YOUR RESEARCH. There are a million ways to start locs, different parting patterns and maintence techniques.
      5) I find going on with the journey without extensions is better. Its really hard to match texture to your own head and thinning can be a big issue down the line. (You can always experiment with clip ins)
      6) Be mindful about lint/build up.
      7) Comparison is the thief of joy. Try not to follow people who do not have the same texture, length or density as you. I find this whole experience better via social media seeing people who are my hair twins go through the same thing.

    Yh, I simplified my routine a lot. I wash, conditon and style weekly cause I work out a lot and can't go longer than 1 week. I choose my style. I do either a wash and go, wash and go up-do, twists, twisted up-do or twist out for the week. Wash day is 1 hour. 1.5 hours if i deep condition. My stylist said I don't need to DC as much anymore cause my routine is consistent. And I get quarterly trims with my stylist. I use a dentangling brush to detangle cause I have high density hair and want to make sure I get all my shed hair out during wash day. I dont get single strand knots anymore and detangling takes 10 mins or less cause I keep up with my trims.

I either leave the braids in or take them out when dry and put my hair in mini twists. I have waist length almost lower/small of back hair and that's the routine that works for me. Since I am back at work again, I am going to go back to wearing my hair in twists. I took a break wearing my hair stretched but it dries out too fast and I am lazy. Right now I’m protective styling with added hair (4-6 weeks) then I take a two week break during which I do braid outs or wash n go. Then I do a protective style with just my hair (2-4 weeks) and then another two week break. My wash days are pretty simple. I only pre-poo after the longer protective style, shampoo twice, condition or deep condition. Sometimes I leave in the deep conditioner and sometimes I rinse it out and add a cream or butter and braid it wet. I wear the braids for 2-3 days and then undo them. While I protective style I try growth oils and massage.
