  • While 60 Minutes was at the Urgent Care Walk-in Clinic for Mental Health at Children's Wisconsin - a place specifically opened for kids and teens in crisis - a mother and her 11-year-old daughter came in looking for help. The young girl had been struggling with anxiety and depression. After the intake process, Tammy Maklouf did a therapy session with the mother and daughter to come up with an actionable plan that they could implement until they were able to get more help. They invited us to sit in.

I dont think parents should be involved in kids therapy sessions, the only reason kids talk to therapists in the first place is because the kids cant talk to their parents or their parents dont beleive them

Late, but I definitely agree I don’t think their parents should know if children don’t want to, it should be totally up to them

Okay so basically I just went to my first therapy session today and I was with my mom! And that was completely fine because I am 14 and I had already told my mom everything bc I am very open to everything. So unlike this video, my mom was in the room but she wasn’t really talking. I was totally comfortable with my mom being there but i feel like in this video the mom was talking for the kid a lot when the kid should be speaking for themselves. In the last few minutes of my therapy session she did make my mom leave the room and asked me if anything was happening at home. Also on the video this room makes it look like a doctors room, my room is very comfortable good coursed and I got fidgets to play with . And instead of talking we played a few games and watched a clip

normally parents have to be present during the first session because that's when they go over treatment plans. after that the parents are no longer required to be in the room, but they can if the child wants. I think here we can assume that the child wanted her mom to be with her.

I noticed the young girl didn't get the chance to really talk until 3.5 minutes into the video. I think the therapist talked with the mother too much to describe her daughter's feelings.

I agree. I don't know why anyone should be speaking too much for their own families.
especially if they're telling the doctor that their got problems that they might not have t all.

I believe that no parent should ever be a part of a therapy session because parents or any sort of higher presence will cause a child to feel like they need to be a certain way. They don’t feel like going there going to be definitely not a free spirit during a therapy session if a parent is with them.

I’m in school to be a therapist and agree with this as well. Parents WILL want to be part of it, and if parent is needed to enact a plan and keep that plan up they should be there-and they are more likely to stop therapy if they’re NEVER included (plus most of the time its the parents who have to “do the work” so to speak). But kids need their one-on-one confidential time to build that trust w the therapist.

sometimes. when people speak for other people. they should becareful not to spread gossip. rumors. even if they are looking out for that person.

Yes, 11yo is a bit young to prescribe medication to have the brain produce chemicals it should be producing and learning to regulate in sufficient quantities on its own. It seems that this session is focused more on cognitive behavioral changes and not on medicated-therapeutic type changes.

@@JustMeeee369 I understand that they can have permission from the child's parent/s and there's informed consent and everything, but I still think the whole concept of filming someone's actual therapy session should just be a big no-no. The point to this is the increase of mental health issues among those younger than 18 years old. According to various reports kids are becoming more stressed, more anxious and more suicidal. This family allowed 60 minutes to be present and provide an example of how this family is reaching out for mental health services.
