You can sort of control the flow of goods by using warehouses set to empty. The AI pathfinding will always seek the closest route to its next destination, so without some sort of way to control which goods are being shipped where, they will all choose the closest port / airport. Doesn't matter how many ports you build, they only see the one. BUT with warehouses, you can greatly increase the efficiency of the flow of goods by providing ample warehouse space near the production buildings, direct lanes of traffic (highways, trains) to the next set of warehouses at the export building you want them to use. iF you had your Oil ware house, plastic ware house next to one port, they would leave that warehouse and hit that close port. Same for the other industry goods. I have been obsessed with supply lines in city skylines. The game is not so much about designing efficient supply lines like transport fever, but its an enjoyable challenge to me to be able to try to manipulate the flow of goods like that.

Ah, I've been controlling the flow by dividing the roads up, making it where literally the only path trucks can go is specific ports, so I roughly figured out the limit for a port and split up the roads so that they can't go anywhere else without passing by the port I rather they use. My roads are a spaghetti nightmare because of that, but I kind of like it that way, cars flowing through roads wildly weaving around each other.

trains are the same way, it's the limits of the ai
even the train is awkward place on cargo ports, it near the water although should be closer to the road. it's a fun game although it needs a little help with cheating or rework for ai, so it knows to bypass with train tracks that has 4 or more rails, and a bunch of things to list

Honestly, i think the main issue with so much traffic in this game is that nothing can take more than 1 vehicle at once. In real life warehouses can take like 5+ trucks at one time, loading and unloading where as in the game everything has to wait, on the street, until every single vehicle ahead of it takes its individual turn interacting with the building before turning around and going home.

    • @stargate525

There's also no communication for business. Individuals (to my knowledge) don't pick the closest job to their house and the closest store to their current location. There should absolutely be a 'we're full, go somewhere else' function for trade hubs when an industry tries to send off a truck.

Kibitz, quick tip: Warehouses can't store raw materials. Not oil, not ore, not crops, and not logs. Only industry-specific storages, which can be placed outside of those areas, can do that.
Also lane mathmatics are important - they make everything look super neat. That's more important than anything. They also improve efficiency by forcing vehicles to merge across miles of road rather than clogging lanes and blocking other destinations but that's less important.

so they always go to the one closest of the 3 you cram together
overflowing the tiny roads you lead up to it
because its one road leading to both, so the closest is always the closest for everyone
instead of having an export location in every corner of the city so that the route from production to export is as short as possible and closest to destination is different depending on starting location
this also gives different roads used for each, so less likely to get clogged
... why did you put all those warehouses on the same road
at this point your gridlocks are just intentional

I'm completely out of this game since 2018, so maybe what i'm about to say will maybe not work.
It would be cool, if you could set up an industrial zone, which goods are being delivered to a warehouse. And from this warehouse the goods are being delivered to a train station within the industrial zone, which tracks only lead one way to an airport train station / port train station, so the goods are forced to use the train to leave the city. It's important the train station has no outside connection, so no outside trains will come into your city, unloading their goods and cause traffic issues on the highways.
Also it would be cool if you would use more in-city-trains in general, so the goods don't have to be transported on the road (also is realistic, because goods on train in real-life is so much cheaper...normally...when you have time). So it could be possible, that you could set up multiple ports for each industrial zone. Or even more for just one (like oil or so).
But as i said: I didn't play the game for like...nearly 4 years, so i don't have any clue, whether this is possible, or just brain farts of mine, which doesn't work at all.

I.e. think of a large circle of warehouses/terminals, all along a single multi lane road, but with exit ramps after each warehouse/terminal. That way the AI doesn't need to make a decision about which entrance to take to a factory, and they are able to exit the loop immediately upon picking up or dropping off.

new to this game. I am seeing lots of additional purchases for it. I bought the game for $30 on Steam. Which add ons do I need to purchase first? Are they needed to enjoy the game. It seems pretty touchy to me for now.

I don't play this game, but I think that there might be a cargo ship DLC. I would like if you tried one

Has anyone ever told you that you both look and sound exactly like Tobias Funke from Arrested Development? it's almost uncanny. I mean this as a compliment

In order to fix the plane taxi issue he needed to make more exits or create a new runway that is only dedicated to landing because all those planes where being forced to land on one runway which would clearly cause then to bunch up like that

i noticed using multiple entrances to one place while having multiple exits works very efficiently

This is what Simcity could have been if they didn't ruin the last game. It will be a while before people get nostalgic enough to want a new Simcity game.

It's weird trying to figure out how the traffic in this game works but it's awesome when everything starts working

When it comes to infrastructures, zoning, education, happiness, future potential and all the things that makes the perfect city in City Skyline: Which city in America or UK, would you say is the absolute best city with great examples of how it should be done?

I find restricting certain roads to lower speeds help with diverting traffic onto highways, or roads with more lanes that can handle the traffic, placing a 20 mph limit In Urban areas stops heavy traffic, also makes the people happy as the noise is reduced. Should have a play see what you think.

Could you do an episode on your train network in Satisfactory? Im trying to set up my train systems and it would be a big help to see how you did yours. Also I have been loving the Cities series, now I want to get into this game as well!
