- This is one of the most essential things in life.
Stillness is that quiet moment when inspiration hits you. It’s that ability to step back and reflect. It’s what makes room for gratitude and happiness. It’s one of the most powerful forces on earth. In this video bestselling author Ryan Holiday summarizes his #1 New York Times Bestselling book "Stillness Is The Key" in just 5 minutes.
To the ancient Stoics, if one could develop this stillness, this peace within themselves-if they could achieve apatheia, as they called it-the world could be at war and in complete chaos, but they could maintain their tranquility. They could still think well, work well, and be well. “You may be sure that you are at peace with yourself,” Seneca wrote, “when no noise reaches you, when no word shakes you out of yourself, whether it be flattery or a threat, or merely an empty sound buzzing about you with unmeaning din.”
In Stillness is the Key, the book that completes the trilogy that began with The Obstacle is The Way and Ego is the Enemy, Ryan Holiday argues that stillness is the key to being better at anything you do. Holiday looks at Buddhism, Stoicism, Epicureanism, Christianity, Hinduism, and countless other philosophical schools and religions and shows that it’s all but impossible to find one that doesn’t venerate this inner peace-this stillness-as the highest good and as the key to a thriving, meaningful life. “And when basically all the wisdom of the ancient world agrees on something,” Holiday writes, “only a fool would decline to listen.”

I stopped listening to music in the car about a year ago for this reason- driving forces me to only drive, nothing else. I can be still, practice deep breathing, and be in silence. It’s very peaceful but uncomfortable at first.. I would try it!
Driving with no music is so powerful. I used to listen to music in the car every time. And loud. Now I just breathe. And manifest. 🙂
@@johnmatthews7446 it’s a profound experience!
I’m practicing stillness in traveling and peace in every situation
Eckhart Tolle speaks to this.
There is ONLY the present and as such all 'happy' moments have one thing in common: You are totally satisfied with what is in that moment.
Stillness is the key is a book that completely changed my life, and one of the few books I read over and over again!! Like a manual for life.
This has been soooooo important to my Self development. Currently reading Ego is the Enemy, and I can't wrap my head around the fact that we all must go through these phases of uncovering, discovering, unfolding, becoming more, becoming Nothing. In the end, No thing.
The Buddhist would simply call it mindfulness! No matter what the name, it is an incredibly powerful skilll to have
It’s not just the buddhists who call it mindfulness
Couldn’t said it better myself especially for a guy like me like an anchor in a storm
@@Saber23 Mindfulness was extracted from Buddhism, by stripping important teachings on compassion, wisdom and view, leaving a dry method marketable for the western materialistic society.
@@drtransistor again no it really wasn’t I didn’t know who told you that but the practice of forms of meditation and mindfulness have been present in all traditions across the world for thousands of years most of which had never even met a Buddhist before Buddhism just puts emphasis on a specific form of it
@@Saber23 Mindfulness, defined as directing attention to the present moment or "space between thoughts", often accompanied by some form of breathing practice is derived directly from Buddhism, be it Zen or Tibetan schools, where it's referred to as shinay or shamata. This is where the modern mainstream understanding of mindfulness comes from, which you can double-check on Wikipedia. Sure, other traditions have some form of contemplation, but to conflate that with mindfulness practice would be intellectually dishonest.
It's so cool that he gives us the boiled-down summary of the book for free even though it would be better for marketing to have us all just buy it.
Flew from Indiana to Austin then drove to your store and picked up this book. Absolutely love it so far!
It's a game changer!
By far my favourite from ryan stillness is the key. Really helped that I was reading this on a cruise in the middle of the ocean with the moon looking down on me. Star moment in itself.
Wonderful. I’m grateful of your ability to put ancient ideas into a digestible form for the modern world. I have Ego is the Enemy, I hope to get this one too.
I learnt this skill that I apply to every aspect of my life from boxing specifically hitting the bag every day for 2 years. You have to totally be still inside to be fast n powerful and I use it wen swimming in the ocean to never get tired.it’s a skill to learn and get better at and wen you realise it you will never be the old you again.
Ryan, you’re stoking my thirst, finding more meaning in my ‘golden’ years. 🙏
Your books about stoicism helped me align my own philosophy and stoicism has helped me work toward making my life better. I thank you for the time and effort you put into your work and compiling all this information. You and your work has influenced me to organize my life and adjust my perception in a much better way. Thank you for everything.
Stay still and know that I am God says the bible. I have meditated and practice this simple but hard as well behavior of being still. it's just unbelievable the miracles I have witnessed.
Just those words, stillness is the key, help me to focus on what I have been looking for. Thank you.
Lately my stillness has been returning after many years of absence. My effectiveness and capability is improving significantly. So true what Ryan says in this video.
Great stuff as always Ryan!
Thank you Mr Holiday
Great series. Stillness is a goal I have! I’m getting better, thank you.
This is gold!
“The still point of a turning world.” T.S. Eliot
I totally agree with stillness as the way forward ! I try to go into a zone mode in my wildlife photography where I try and become one with the camera ! The camera just becomes an extension of expression ! But it is difficult to master and it comes from an inner core stillness or platform which you build on ! Still enjoying the Daily Stoic. I must get your latest trying to incorporate more Stoic philosophy in my life ! 👍
Very true Ryan, this book should go hand in hand with the movie A Quiet Place.
Thank you
I've been considering getting your book on Courage. Started reading a preview on it so far. Ive been thinking a lot about investments and how resources spent(time, money, energy) all are investments and dealing with a stint in my life where i felt that I lacked a lot of courage, i'm interested in the book.
A signed copy would be killer.
Just getting started to use that corny phrase instantly this resonates stillness something I could use right now wound too tight thanks again young man love what you do and how you do it much love and respect for me and my girls🐶😎🐶🤜🤛🐶
good explanation
Great video
Blaise Pascal meant on the contrary that people were unable to stay home and be pleased, constantly wanted to go out seeking some form of thrill, whilst Seneca craved external peace and quiet in order to focus. They are talking about opposite circumstances, Seneca the outward noise leading to more internal noise, and Pascal the outward stillness leading to focusing on the internal noise, leading to people doing things to avoid it.
Sit quietly....I try to do that every day 💗
Patiently waiting for my copy to be delivered 😊
How do you manage do practice stillness when having a family/children? I find that extremely challenging.
Letting go that’s why this video was put before me the universe works in mysterious ways I needed to hear those words letting go
I am asking for help here. Since 1993 I have never had one second of quiet. Paradoxically, despite being deaf and wearing $16G hearing aids, I have extreme tinnitus in both ears. It’s a very unpleasant sound, akin to an electrical malfunction. I used to be able to hear it above our motorcycle when we opened it up on the highway. Sitting quietly only makes it louder. Any suggestions? Not medical ones, but from philosophy.
Fabulous 😊🏴☠️
We can be silent and regardless of what we are hearing outside or unvoluntariy inner thoughts, knowing that it is okay to hear them, we can recognize what charges they bring to us, how they make us feel, but also being there without judgement about ourselves.
Perfect timing! Was recommended this book by Matt D'Avella and just got it from the library this morning! Can’t wait!
" Make a decision and understand the results are not up to you " ..... 💡
Hey Ryan, of all your books. Which one do you recommend we start with 1st, if we want to learn more
In the silence here, in the silence hear. All is closer than near.
Ryan Holidays is the McDonald's of philosophy. Easy to consume, not that nutritious but compared to no philosophical reading at all, it suffices. The way he markets himself and the way he writes the books you can tell, it is not work of substance but something meant to sell easy and be absorbed by the everyman. It's not wrong per se, just that I urge all those who want to seek deeper to read other forms of philosophy as well. Descartes, Nietzsche, Epictetus, Machiavelli etc... read widely.
Ryan Holiday's simplified, modernised, commodified version of stoic philosophy is to philosophy what Panda Express is to Chinese food. Read it, learn what you can, but consider seeking a lot deeper and wider.
Flow state and deep work are different things or opposite things. Flow state are about producing something you are good at. Deep work are about learning something you can’t yet do.
You can be in flow without being good at when you are completely involved your mind has stopped thinking.
I benefited a lot from your contents M.r Ryan, currently having your book daily stoic, every insight every day,as much as you're a book worm as you read much,I invite you my friend to read the Quran and get introduced to it.Hope you see that comment.
Also ..there is Daily Stoic Podcast on Spotify
Ryan you remind me of a much more successful version of myself haha. Although I've succeeded a lot in life so far, I need to tell myself that I am enough. Every single one of you reading this comment, you are enough, no matter what.
👌
this guy is just so bad ass explaining his own book now that is something I really respect
Amazing that Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan were such hollow people, while Anne Frank was a complete person. Along with Ryan's book, I highly recommend following Thich Nhat Hanh.
♥️ ♥️
Sir why in your books always have 3 part?
While wearing a Killers T-shirt! 😂😂😂😂😂😂
LOL, my daughter has been to Vegas a number of times to hang with Brandon and the band. She wears a "Victims" t-shirt.
That wasn't the Seneca image you used.
Wanna see Ryan sporting an RHCP T-shirt
I don't know if anyone watches DragonBall Super or is familiar with DragonBall Z but Goku the main character has a transformation called "Ultra Instinct" which can only be achieved by reaching a level of mental stillness and calm. Goku's previous transformations were obtained through anger and rigorous effort but Ultra Instinct his most powerful form, is achieved through stillness of spirit and mind!
Buddhist called it upekkha hindu call it samatvam according to the book .
Be still and know God.
Fishing / hunting
I've read this book and liked it but Holiday himself in these videos seem anything but "still"😀 Lots of restless sitting, jump cuts and grabbing and moving stuff. I think he needs to reread what he wrote.
By keeping yourself active, we achieve a still mind. Watch it or read it again :).
I liked this book up until the chapters on accepting a higher power and enter relationships
Those chapters come across extremely narrow-minded
You need to accept a higher power
@@dac8939 I actually don't

Stop.
And think.
You should not have mentioned Churchill. He was the person befind bengal famine. He was single handedly responsible for starvation and death of so many indian people. Google it. Millions of people died in Indian because he diverted food supplies out from India.
Research your examples before you brand them as great peoples.
The irony is that he is far from “still” in the video
Shut up and take my money!
and what about actual grown-ups? seriously...
stillness, it's the ability to slow down....dude talks so fast, almost foaming....writing a book about stillness then summarizing it in 5-minutes 😂😂
