I just bought my first diesel to pull my new to me 5th wheel camper. I ended up getting an early 99 7.3L. So far, I have an intake, 4" turbo back exhaust that duals out under the back of the cab. I just got done installing all my gauges. I ended up rebuilding my tranny a couple months ago. I did it myself and installed a tugger kit while i was at it and a dual clutch disk converter. The truck has 275,000 miles on it and idles at temperature with 48 pounds of oil pressure. I also put on a flat bed with a nice tool box and a 150 gallon auxiliary fuel tank. It has 35" tires and gets about 16mpg. A tuner will be my next purchase. I figured id set it up to take advantage of the tuner before I got it. The intake and exhaust did make a difference. I have about $4k tied up into the whole thing, including the price of the truck.
This sounds like a nice rig and would benefit largely with a tune! Nice build.
@8020Media
Thanks, and yes, it would benefit from a tune. It runs really well now, I can't wait to see how it runs with another 100hp and 200 lbft. My next 2 mods will be the Hydra and a turbo master waste gate controller. I'm actually putting my own boost fooler together with a 1/4" pressure regulator.
I'm also really thinking about running heated fuel lines and maybe a heat pad on the fuel tank. I live in se Idaho so it's cold here a lot! Last January, we saw -37 and it can get much colder than that.
J - Nice! Keep us updated!
A congratulations on your purchase of a 73 mine has 336,000 original injectors and a few upgrades I read that you were talking about making your own boost fooler here's an idea for you check this link out this is what I did very simple and the hose that goes on the other end of this thing all you have to do is heat it up and it goes right onto the nipple on your map sensor and the other and 1/8 NPT pipe thread ONTO THE INTAKE SPIDER check it out you will understand

Gas Mileage?? Bro, My 2000 7.3 gets 18+MPGs of Fuel mileage! Did my mods back in 04' Banks intercooler, Upgraded trurbo with a 4" strait thru exhaust, the big plus was the NaviStar/Inernational A/C injectors and upgrading to a TS 6 stage power chip! Rebuild the Trans with a converter to handle the power... But! Only run on stage 4 and Rarely give my beloved Power Stroke Hell :) She's a Mid-Night Blue Lariat and still looking Sweet!
The biggest mod was a New Motor wire harness... These trucks are getting old!
D - Thanks for sharing your experience. Are you only driving it on the highway?
@8020Media my 7.3 gets 17 mpg city it's amazing
D - That's pretty damn good.. what mods do you have on it?

D - Nice! Thanks for sharing your build.
Looking to get a crew cab 4x4 7.3 Power Stroke . Great video, the 7.3 only had 250 HP at the fly wheel from the Ford. The improvements sound great! I was a Test Driver for ford in AZ at Yucca Proving Grounds! Loved that job!
D - Thanks for the feedback! Sounds neat.
You don't get a 7.3 for power, you get it for half a million on the road.
N - What can be true for others, may not be true for all.
Good info
Eragon - Thanks for the feedback!
The discord between the top and the tee shirt... :-))
Bobby - :)
I'm leaving mine stock with the ccv mod the only thing I'm changing after that is the oil
Donald - Not a bad idea!
I have an 03 superduty 4 door 4x4 with a 7.3 that I’ve owned for about 12 or 13 years now. It gets 17mpg. My only mods are an AFE cold air intake, magnaflow 4” turbo back exhaust with no muffler, and I swapped to a turbo pedestal with no butterfly in it. Everything else is stock. I’m seriously considering the Hydra chip you suggested to see if I can squeeze any more power and mpg’s out of it.
G - Nice! Sounds like you take great care of it.
so the hydra tuner tunes the engine? i’m looking into a bigger turbo but im terrible at the whole tuning thing. so if i put the turbo on, a new exhaust and a BP intake, they hydra will take care of that?
Is a 4 inch turboback exhaust system good if you replace the compresor wheel on the stock turbo?
Yes - 4" is plenty big for that.
I've had an e99 for 12 years and tried a TS6 tuner but saw a 2mpg drop in mileage so I run it in stock mode. Seriously considering an intake mod and maybe a higher flowing muffler. It's a daily driver that occasionally tows a 5th wheel. Not interested in more noise, but can deal with some to get more power and mileage. I'll try the 50 mph tune with any new mod to see if the mileage improves vs taking at hit. Nice video.
Sol - Thanks for the feedback & sharing your experience! If you're looking for an intake, here's a great option that combines price, quality, and performance: boostedperformance.com/73-powerstroke-cold-air-intake
What guages would you recomment running on a pillar? I kind of want to keep it streamlined and nice inside and not add a screen but still have guages for important things.
Boost and EGTs are the two most important - fuel pressure is good too to keep an eye on injectors. And then trans temp if you have an auto and want it. I just have boost and EGTs on mine but if you get a 3 pillar or something toss in fuel pressure

T - Nice build! Thanks for sharing.
Do these recommendations apply to the 94-97 7.3 powerstroke?
R - Sure do!
I’m not sure if I misunderstood. The steel exhaust won’t rust out as quick as the aluminum?
Yes - aluminum is more prone to corrosion from salt. Stainless steel holds up better. I've got an aluminum one on my F350 and I had to have a hole in the piping patched last year. So stainless holds up better/is more durable. Sound is of course a preference but a lot of people do prefer the sound made by aluminum over stainless on these trucks too though.
@@8020Mediaif your "aluminum" exhaust is rusting, you have steel 😂
@@coltondavis7222corrosion doesn’t equal rust🧍♂️
@@coltondavis7222he said corrosion not rust. Plus he’s talking abt stainless steel
Hello Jake, If you get to reading the comments, what is the best way to reach out to you purchase these four upgrades?
I looked on the website and could not find the tuner nor the fooler. Can I send an email from the webpage referencing this YT video and just ask for this package?
Thanks for the email, I'll get back to you this morning!
BTW Stock fuel system can support quite a bit more than 400, actually reliable into the 500+ range.
I know the OBS fuel systems can handle a good bit more, you talking 99.5+'s though?
@8020Media obs systems can't handle more, they run a mechanical pump, I would lose fuel pressure with 180/0 injectors.
Im looking at a 99 f450 for work. Im interested in upgrades specifically for towing heavier loads.
It has 132,000 miles and has a 6 speed manual trans.
I do masonry work in a remote rural town and have to haul material in for most of my jobs.
This truck would be ideal for my situation, especially if it had a little more power over stock.
I clicked on the link from the description here but not exactly sure what combination would work best?
Thanks for any advice.
G - All of the mods listed will get you to that 325WHP.
@@8020Media thanks!
@8020Media I picked up that truck the other day.
It has a newer flatbed that's ideal for my type of work.
It also has an aftermarket intake and 4" exhaust, not sure about any tunes but it definitely has quite a bit more power compared to the 7.3 I sold last year.
I'm curious if it already has some type of tune previously installed can you install something different?
I'm not sure how that works so I'll probably run it the way it is and see how it does.
I have a light load to pick up this coming week that will be a good way to test it out. It's a 4 hour round trip through some mountain passes. Like I mentioned this truck definitely has more power but I need it to be able to pull heavy loads and not get hot.
I couldn't be happier though, I only paid 4k for it.
G - Sounds like a solid deal! Keep us updated on the build.
What about hood exit exhaust?
M - Rare, but we wouldn't/can't advise that.

T - Thanks for sharing your build. Sounds like a solid one.
How do you like the setup? I'm planning on going the same route, only difference what im wantkng to do, bigger turbo with a 1.0 housing vs the .84 and an air intake that takes air from outside the hood not from under the hood....
I had a 94 with 180/0 stock turbo with a 1.0 housing and exhaust mods and ts chip with tony wildman tunes, I would peg out the boost gauge if I stayed in long enough and that was 35 psi.... I have videos of the truck. I miss it sometimes.
@centraltexasfoxbodies it's been pretty solid definitely has some get up vs stock . Was on the fence with the 1.0 but so far no complaints with the .84 did have a issue with egts while towing but found out my Intercooler was leaking pretty bad replaced it along with the stock boots and now no issues.
I've seen mid 30s while in my street tunes but I rarely jump on it .
T - Hell yeah!
Doo you know the power numbers your hitting? Also what did you that you " are hitting mid 30s"
Quick question, if you use the php turner and take the truck in for service, is the service provider able to tell if it has a tuner or not? What if you remove the tuner before taking it in and restore the truck back to the factory tune, can they tell if it’s was flashed?
Do you have an aftermarket warranty or something? If you don't have any warranty then it really doesn't matter if they know it is tuned or not.
@@8020Media
I have a warranty on my transmission, just had it replaced and tunes void the lifetime warranty. I removed the php and tuned it back to stock before replacing the transmission.
I - Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm sure this will come in handy for other viewers!
I have a 2002 f350 dually with 65k original miles (it is mint)...My dilemma is do i change out perfectly good stock parts for aftermarket parts? I pull a 11k pound 5th wheel about 4-5k miles a year...thanks
Mike - It depends what parts you are wanting to change.
your truck is worth well north of 35k. possibly a lot more if it is manual, crewcab, and 4x4.
F - Agreed!
4x4 crew cab lariat unfortunately not manual
You only mentioned HP what about TORQUE ratings that's what's important for diesel owners
Yes, that's true I probably should have talked about torque limits but torque can be managed with proper tuning so just important to stick to reputable tuners.
I have had a Bully Dog on my 02 for probably 12 years. Would it pay to go to a newer Hydra?
My truck is a tow rig for a 4 horse trailer.
William - Has the Bully Dog worked well for you?
It has so far. I only use the tow tune
I don't think there's a reason to switch it up.
Wouldn't doubt that some "updated" tuning wouldnt hurt. All else keep running it!
Mules - Agreed!
been thinking of getting a 7.3 or lb7. which one would you choose personally?
I own a 7.3 personally if that answers the question!
I use both for work.
Ford is much softer ride and I think stops better.
Gm is much quicker, better tow mode, it's an LLY tho. However my step dad had an lb7, and it survived that moron until he literally set it on fire drunk.
Both will pull whatever the truck can handle just fine.
What is the stock WHP? If you are hitting 325 WHP what is the ball park torque numbers?
Depending on the year and model stock dyno numbers range from like 165whp-210whp. Torque will depend more so on the tuning but just running the Hydra you're probably somewhere around 650wtq range at 300-325whp.
Equivalent size Briggs and Stratton would make more
J - Thanks for the insight.
Do yourself a favor and get rid of the hot air intake (CAI) I made that mistake and could not believe the difference with a true CAI.
M - Thanks for sharing this insight.
Are you talking about AIH delete or is this something different
Air filter. You lose power when sucking in hot air from under the hood. Talking from first-hand experience as I ran that filter for a while until I got the S&B CAI.
M - Thanks for taking the time to reply here!
@@msr02all that hot air for 10 hp.
When you say "Aluminum" exhaust vs Steel you do know that it isnt actually made of Aluminum, right?
Yes I'm aware it is aluminized steel.
Yeah it has terrible gas mileage cuz it doesn't use gas
M - lol thanks for the insight.
Its gas mileage is infinite, fuel mileage is low.
If it ran on your hot air it could drive across the ocean to Hawaii and back
Put a 6.7 Cummins in it. Done.
M - Both great engines..
your wallet too.
Lmao no money
Where do you find an aluminum exhaust? All I've ever seen is an aluminized steel exhaust and stainless steel.... I'm confused now
Yeah sorry I referred to it as aluminum but it is aluminized steel
@8020Media so what exhaust am I supposed to use? Your video said that a steel exhaust makes a different pitch but they are all steel....
C - We're coming out with a 7.3 exhaust video next week.
Your video said that steel systems cause drone but both systems are steel
