The funny part is that Larry isn’t gonna care what anyone says about him.
Never has and never will.
Larry Bird is the GOAT.
Goats like Larry Bird don't give a damn what anyone says about them.
His record says it all. He doesn't have to take on anyone about it
Larry said it several times before... He don't care what people says about him. He really don't care at all.. 😅
Yawn.
Yeah as someone that lives in Indiana and have followed him since his ISU days, I’m sure Larry doesn’t give a 💩 about this show. His accolades and rings speak for themselves.
That being said, episode three of season two really does do Larry Legend justice.
As much as I was Lakers fan. Bird was my guy. I grew up in Indiana…had the black and white weapons…shit was real.
I wonder if Larry cares about how much he was dominated by Magic and the Lakers in REAL LIFE 😎
You couldn't possibly have a show about the Showtime Lakers without including Bird. They were so intertwined from the 1979 NCAA championship and all through the80's.
That actor playing Bird is the rare case of he's so spot on to an eaeily degree channeling Larry Legend it makes everybody else in the cast instantly look like community theatre actors by comparison. He's too perfect. He's so spittin' image of Bird that all the medium camera takes with the entire ensemble in one shot make it seem like the real Larry Bird was digitally inserted into footage of recreated scenes shot with lookalike stand in dayplayers. He looks too good. It plays tricks with your mind. I can never lose myself into the reality of the show when he shows up because suddenly it goes from scripted drama to instantly documentary like realism then smash cut back to pretend make believe over and over. The whiplash mind f*ck is incredible. Should be a ride at Disneyland.
Larry top ten all time legend
Of course. Most have him 7. I have him top 5. And top 2 if just 1984-1988
Top 1-5! When you look at Pts, RBs, Ass, and Steals per game, Bird is top 3 in my opinion.
If you look at impact that he had on his team you would have to consider him the GOAT.
@@conceptualclarity Larry was him still
People always said Bird was 6'10 or taller but he wanted opponents to underestimate him. Always thinking ahead
Thanks that's the first time I've heard an an explanation for why it could have been that Larry Bird's height was misreported
Loved that this last episode was more of a Larry Bird episode. Kinda cool that they gave a storyline to a none Lakers player in this last episode.
And I'm sure they're going to explore the close friendship developed between both of them. I feel it's a happy ending for both men. 😊
If the timeline given here is correct, that will be in season 3.
It's one of the sweetest stories in sports history. These two very different men (young men at the time) who are so gifted but competitive as hell. End up being each other's soulmates on and off the court. I mean Larry was so good, Magic has spent his whole life telling people..
Really loved the first season , heres hoping the second season is just as good.
Larry Bird a legit 6'10"
that rivalry was Legendary. the fans back then were lit on both sides. truly the Golden Age of basketball (up until Mike left in 98)
God someone got Magic and Bird to watch this together
As far as dramatizing basketball, Magic is the perfect hero and Bird is the perfect final boss.
I think that depends on the person watching. As a kid that grew up in New England in the 80s, Larry Legend is definitely the hero of the story.
@@hlf_coder6272 Right? In my view LB is the hero, and the Lakers with all their flash, celebrities, and Hollywood high life make a great villain
totally agree with the above two sentiments. larry is the hero from the outside perspective. but when u learn that larry was a trash talking alpha male and magic was a really nice guy, it gets a little more blurry, lol.
Bird is the real Hero! He took a lottery team to the chip as a rook (second year though)
@@javigar133 Larry took Indiana State to the Nat championship. That is legendary enough even if he never has a NBA career
Larry Bird rules!!!!
How and Magic Johnson won more titles than he did😂😂😂😂
@@2115Randy it's not like Magic came onto an already star filled team while Bird came to a team that lost like 60 games the year before or anything lol
Magic won one right away and the West wasn't as strong as the East. Bird had to go through the 76ers and the bad boy Pistons just to get to the Finals. Bird won the first time they faced each other in 84. Bird lost to him in 86 in a series so close, it basically came down to a game winning shot by Bird that bounced out of the rim in game 3 or 4. In 87 the Celtics and Pistons fought through an extremely physical 7 game series highlighted by Bird's famous steal in game 5, eventually winning the series but they had little left in the tank for the Lakers in the Finals.
Don't try and dis on Bird young fella, you will only embarrass yourself. From 84-88, for 4 straight seasons Bird was a 50/40/90 shooter (founding member of that club btw) while putting up just over 28 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists per game. Do you know how many other players have matched that? ZERO! Feal free to do some research, you won't any player's that can match that in 4 seasons, let alone 4 straight.
@@Finnssssss the 1987 finals was close? Oh my every laker win was by 11 points, that's right the games were so close that Lakers "only"won by 11 points instead of 20 points 😂
@@Finnssssss oh you also mentioned going through the sixers, well the Celtics were 1-2 against the sixers when Dr. J was still in his prime, then when Dr. J was already 34 years old, when the sixers foolishly traded Moses to Washington, when they foolishly traded the number 1 overall pick in the 1986 draft and when Andrew toney suffered a career ending injury that was the only time the Celtics became the absolute kings of the east
@@Iceman-pt4eo no I CLEARLY said 86 was close, I said the Celtics had very little left in the tank by the time they got to the Finals after a knock down drag it out 7 game series vs Detroit.
I enjoyed the acting, great great job. I especially enjoy when the characters dialog includes looking into the TV audience. It's like, "I know, you know but we're telling a story" (wink)
Honestly, my favorite moment was the first episode of season 1. It was so funny
Great show, now we Will see Bird
Bottom line is this documentary is about when Majic and Bird brought the NBA from certain Death. When Majic and Bird entered the league it all changed. It was a boom for network TV. Yep players actually cared if they won the basketball game. Sadly the NBA has died. When ya give a guy millions from shoes made in China or Taiwan and more millions just to show up, why would ya care if you win or lose? As you see now with arenas 1/3 full, the Millionaire players go back and forth up and down the court not really caring. Erving Johnson and Larry Bird and Michael and many more from that ERA actually cared about winning.
Do not forget Cooper.
I watched basketball at that time and for some reason Cooper to me have Bird fits.
Then I hated the Lakers, but I watch them and could not figure out how you could beat them. They were that talented and good.
I was amazed when Celtics could slow them down and beat them (I was a Celtics fan). Now as and adult I care for that LA team because I learned it is not how many wins, it is who you beat that makes you truly great.
Man so many evenly matched great teams back then. Dr. J was the so good, Moses Malone, just on and on.
Oh yeah, go back to the old wooden rackets in Tennis so we can see a game and not just serves.
Dang sports manipulated to satisfy the casual fan (just to see numbers on the board) has ruined many sports for me. Surprised they have not added 10’ width and 4’ height to the soccer goals so we can see more points.
Love the show, love your review. My favorite aspect is that is dramatizes and makes "real" all the events and emotions that so many of us know so well. Irrespective of how accurate the portrayals of the men are, this is a great show, and the Lakers are a great organization. I love LA.
During lockdown... that weekly season 1 of Winning Time helped me from tearing my eyes out from boredom... and I watched a ton of Ridiculousness and Impractical Jokers too... man that was crazy....
Big Celtics fan for a long time! Great series! I respect that laker team! They like the C's. Could talk much trash! And then back it up! Unbelievable how you found someone that looks so much like Larry Bird he could be his long lost brother!
It's a Fantasy Sports Series. Let's just enjoy the trip
Wow…that really looks like Bird!
This was a great era of nba.. ...2 super teams trading titles and mvps and admitidly the Lakers came out on the top, but it was fun to watch nonetheless ..alond with Dr J and Moses 76ers great 1983 title run..then seeing MJ's dominance after a Pistons back to back title run was seeing basketball at its very best...
My guess: Bird won't watch one minute of this show.
I'd say he checks it out, lasting maybe a minute heh heh
Larry Bird is gonna be the Johnny Lawrence of the show.
Back in the 80s I knew who all the players on the Celtics, Lakers and Sixers were. Now I couldn't dare less about the NBA. I wish they would move the whole league to China and get it over with.
Larry Bird and Michael Jordan are the two most confident basketball players of all time. Neither gave an inch of a sh*t about what others said and they got into the heads of everyone else.
Gotta admit, that dude looks just like Bird in every way lol...OMG that is unreal!
Legend
LB top 5 all time. Awesome seven year stretch
Yes sir. Def top 5
best forward ever
winning time is the best. so good.
Good job
If season 2 includes all those seasons, I better see how dominant the '83 Sixers were. I want to see fo,fo,fo from Moses. I better see how good Dr. J, Andrew Toney (The boston strangler), Cheeks and the game-altering defense of Sixth man Bobby Jones. That '83 Sixers team was better than any of these other teams those years.
The show is about the lakers. Pretty sure the sixers won't have a big feature.
@@terancem6240 They would have to be included pretty heavily in a couple episodes. They lost to the Lakers in the '82 finals and then added a top 3 player in the league. The '82 and '83 episodes have to feature some bad blood between those franchises.
From philly and the day we got Mo was the best feeling I ever had
Boston game in episode 6 was great and my favorite scene in the series is Jerry West comes to the locker room to talk to magic about Russell and chamberlain and wilts desire to be liked then win and then says to him you have to want to win your not happy I can see it I'd give anything to score 15 points in my career to have those rings
Magic got butt hurt because he got called out for not being as goody goody as he claims
peak narcissist puts on this front but everyone knows and is afraid to be shown for who he is
Dude... he never claimed to be a total goody two shoes. If he were, he wouldn't be who he is now. If you listen to him talk about back then, he'll always tell you something along the lines of "Earvin Johnson was a nice, quiet guy. But Magic Johnson was a straight up narcissistic."
Magic Johnson was an alter ego for him in those days. A way of him living out his star power and being whoever and whatever he wanted to be. It's why he and Larry Bird later became friends, because they got to know each other as just Larry and Earvin, away from their rivalry.
@@robertlombardo8437accurate
The show should turn from the Lakers to the Celtics, then to the Bulls
Don’t forget the Bad Boys
Pistons?
@@hideaway7768nobody who watched basketball at the time has God knows. Also, that would be an amazing second act to cover the bad boys in a future series. Get on it HBO, oh sorry MAX lol.
Yep except after the Celtics it should transition to the Bad Boy Pistons, then the Bulls.
@@jimmyboy131 yup
It’s funny to me that people get so upset about a goofy to show. Anyone with any sense knows the “based on true events” is going to be 10-25% true and 75-90% pretend. Because that’s what movies and shows are, pretend. Stories. But then again I can see people getting pissed because there’s goofballs that take this stuff as gospel.
Only a gay nerd with no life would be upset that this isn’t 100% historically accurate lol
Like Jerry West?
Both are great players, but Bird was better in my book. He's #2 of all time. MJ just is #1. That's inarguable, but Larry is #2 forever as far as I'm concerned.
I'd personally put Magic at #3, but a strong argument could be made for Wilt, Kobe or Kareem too.
I agree with all of this
When you look at Pts. RBs. Assists, and Steals per game, Bird could be #1. I'll just say top 3!
Jordan was marketed. Couple of those rings refs handed to the Bulls.
That guy carried and traveled so much. Even Magic pointed it out when making the dream team commercial and Jordan could not hold back the disgust because it was true.
@@tedfio1tedfio1no he couldn’t He’s not better than MJ/Magic or Bron.
@@blackway643 He was better than Magic, and your Bron. 3 MVPs In A Row before his back gave up.
They could bother give Larry curls, at least
Larry Bird is the GOAT.
What at Indiana state??
I'm a huge Bird fan but,I've just got to give that one to Wilt. Larry might not be the goat but his name damn sure comes up when they talk about him.
@@stevesmith2171 like docksides Steve smith??
Kareem told Magic to change that contract that he was worth more to LA than he realized.
The word is “PORTRAY”!! No portrait!!
It was a good show 🤷♂️
The larry bird actor does not look larry birdish enough🤔
Busy boy 02
See at 1:41 how much taller Bird was than Johnson. Looks like Bird really was 6'10 or 6'11 as some players have said and not 6'9. Makes all the more silly this talk about how "unathletic" he was.
Agree. I think Bird was closer 6’10 and Magic was a short 6’8”.
Compared to Kareem, who was 7'2, Bird looks like he's about 3 inches shorter, so he's gotta be 6'10 easily.
@@jimmyboy131 wasn't Kareem taller than 7'2?
What does being tall have to do with being athletic?
@@HarmanHundal01 The taller and heavier a player is, the less possible it is for him to have excellent speed and quickness. That's why centers seldom bring the ball up the court. It would be hard to find a basketball team where a footrace that matched the guards against the forwards would not be won by the guards. If you look at championship sprinters in track and field there is a certain height range that is the ideal height range for sprinters and it is well below the height range for basketball forwards.
In addition it seems to me like I have heard that guards tend to have greater vertical leaps than forwards and centers. (Of course being much taller is likely to enable big men to jump to a greater height anyway.)
They should have just told truths regardless if it wouldn't have been compelling TV. The dramatization got the show canceled. 🤷
Stop it at 1:42.... If Magic is 6'9".... then it is true, Larry has to be 6' 11"
Larry never watched it
😂😂😂
You wouldn't watch a show that's about you? You can bet Magic, Larry Bird, Jerry West, the Buss children, etc.. Will be watching.
I can bet with pretty good certainty that Bird will not be watching. He doesn't even watch old games of himself playing. Now there's a show which his friends (including Magic) don't think was accurate or a fair portrayal of them, with actors in the role of the players? Bird is going to shrug and golf instead.
I don’t like the Larry Bird in this show. He’s not that douchey and serious. Also Magic doesn’t sound 80’s enough. Sounds like any Gen Z-er nowadays
Agree. He's one dimensional. But they are probably setting up the friendship that develops
Season 2 episode 2 of Winning Time is just ok.
Wtf did they do to Larry’s face
Kareem should be pissed over the way they portrayed him. Not flattering at all.
Why does the actor portraying Magic look like Kareem?
Don't think so
The wigs and makeup are so bad....cheap. Am I the only one?
Man does not act like Larry lol
IIm pretty sure Magic Johnson will NEVER EVER be "the real star" of ANY Celtics documentary. Racism in America is hilarious.
I agree. It's crazy how the black players could talk about the white boy being slow and couldn't jump but if a white person in a regular job said that the black guy couldn't show up to work or do his job it would be racist and the white guy would be fired immediately
why would he be the star of a Celtics documentary when he’s a Laker? that’s like Curry being the main topic in a Lebron James documentary and then blaming it on racism when it doesn’t happen.
the racism in reality has been against Bird.
@@501jaylee I guess you didn't READ the CAPTION of the video you are commenting on.
yeah we need more white players in the nba not enough diversity
The CELTICS had FOUR Hall of Famers. Their best player in 1984 was Cedric Maxwell. Other than Game 4, skinny little Michael Cooper had Bird in his back pocket the entire series. The Celtics won that series on thuggery and dirty tactics and bush league tactics like turning up the thermostat to try to injure old Kareem, setting off the alarm in the Lakers hotel in the middle of the night, dirty fouls, clotheslines, terrible biased officiating and more bush tacts. The next year, the Lakers came back angry and the Celtics smapped like the cowards they were.
Lol the amount of salt in this comment must make you need a drink of water
Who ever wrote that is a moron. 😂😂😂😂
What were you watching?
Nobody ever had Larry Bird in their back pocket. Period.
Cowards? Only a dude who's probably been called that once or 80 times in his life would bring up the word " cowards" you were never in any branch of the military, way outta line
Magic and Bird saved the game and then Jordan kept it going kids today don't know how great bird and Magic was
Magic Johnson proved better in that outcome of the Lakers-Celtics rivalry Magic won more championship than Bird.
Well, I mean there were a few factors. I do think overall, Magic had a better supporting cast. No disrespect to McHale, Parrish, and Johnson but Kareem, Worthy, Cooper, Scott are a better overall core imo. And the Lakers were the best fast break team in that era. They usually ran teams off the court with their pace. The Celtics were the only team in the league that could somewhat matchup talent wise but they had to play a physical style and slow the game down to get an edge. I consider Magic the best PG in history and one of the best ever but I do give Bird a slight edge as an individual player. Bird was good enough to do the majority of the heavy lifting and get the Celtics to those finals to face the Lakers, and even win one. But those Lakers were a juggernaut of a team. No shame in losing to that team.
@@jbellflower83 The 80's Celtics were a great fast break team. They were always looking to push the ball up the floor after makes and misses. Bird is probably the best outlet passer of all time and even Parish and McHale ran the floor well.
@@jbellflower83 I would trust bird over magic any day of the weak to be my go to guy when you need a shot made
I mean.... the difference in rings was 1987. If the Celtics had won that championship, it would have been 4 to 4. I'd like to have seen that series played with a healthy Walton, Wedman, Bias, McHale and Parish before concluding which superstar player was better. The Lakers were able to run the Celtics off the court because half the team was injured (or worse).
The east was way harder than the west in the 80's.
Did you really mention "representation"? Give me a break!
