      And then there’s tons more after that like the Riley blunder that costed the Lakers the 89 finals because he decided to run a boot camp while waiting for Detroit, and then there’s the forever question if Magic already had HIV playing the Bulls in the 1991 finals. They had a feeling it was going to be cancelled but did not know until a few days before the finale aired, so they had to cobble together the end we got. The episode was supposed to end with a despondent Magic in the shower. But upon learning the showing was ending, the showrunners tacked on the Jennie-Jerry Buss ending, which had been filmed before the writers/actors strike but not used and then added the montage of where are they now that comprised the ending.

      It's hard to understand the bad ratings from a cable perspective. I always assumed that if subscribers purchase a package with HBO included, HBO gets their share regardless of how many eyes are watching. I know a lot of people are cutting the cable which may be a reason, but cable is still making big money. It may have been cancelled because the actors wanted to get paid more money which always is a factor in these shows. The show was a bit interesting.

    I wonder if the decision to not do a season 3 has more to do with backlash from the Laker organization and former players as opposed to ratings?
    Or the low ratings were a result of players like Magic and Kareem saying they’re not going to watch it. In hindsight, it would’ve been a good idea to get some of the players involved

    • @michaelrenkes4463
      @michaelrenkes4463 Před 8 měsíci +1

      The low ratings may have partially been the result of the writers/actors strike as the principals were unable to go out and publicize the series via the late night talk shows and such. Plus, the first season opened alongside the NCAA Tournament, so people's minds were on basketball. This season aired just as football was getting started, and the start of basketball season is a couple of months away.

    It seems like this series left off at a pivotal moment in Lakers history. The Lakers facing the Celtics two more times in the finals, their intense rivalry with the Pistons, and the conclusion of their dynasty when they faced the Bulls in 1991 are all significant moments. And of course, Magic Johnson's diagnosis added a dramatic twist to their story. It's disappointing that the series didn't continue, and it would have been great if a network like Starz could have picked it up to provide closure and more insights into these historical events.

    Game Two was in the grasp of the Lakers. They held a 2 point lead with only 18 seconds left on the clock. Magic made a rebound of Kevin McHale’s free throw miss and all he had to do was run out the clock. However, he called timeout. Magic and coach, Pat Riley had committed a major miscommunication. Riley had instructed Johnson to call timeout if McHale made his free throws not if he missed them. After the timeout, the Celtics face guarded the Lakers and caused a turnover. When Johnson inbounded the ball to Worthy, instead of getting it back to him, the second-year forward tried a cross-court pass that was intercepted by Celtics guard Gerald Henderson, who took it in for a layup that tied the game. The Lakers still had an opportunity with 13 seconds left, but Johnson choked. He was unable to get the ball to an open teammate or get a shot off himself, and the contest went into overtime. There, L.A. had a few opportunities to redeem itself but fell short, 124-121. Although its poor performance in the clutch that night seemed, at the time, to be a hiccup, given the Game 3 thrashing the Lakers put on the Celtics, it ultimately set the tone for the series.

    That jacking up the heat was an old John Wooden trick. Coached UCLA 12 seasons 60’s-70’s. He’d have his players practice in it so they were acclimated 😉

    It sounds like the writers, and now actors, strike had a lot to do with the show's cancellation. With actors and writers unable to talk about their projects, they were unavailable to do publicity for the show via the late night talk shows and such. So the word of mouth to pump up the show was not there. Also, running the show in the back half of the summer probably didn't help. It's not basketball season. The first season aired at the same time as the NCAA Tournament, thus basketball was on people's minds. Now, it's all about football. Too bad, as the show despite its occasional distorting of history, was quite good -- and the casting of some of the actors was spot on -- for those who are fans of basketball or sports history. It would have been great to see how Magic and Larry went from mortal enemies to best of friends.

    At least they should have shown the Lakers 1985 and 1987 Finals Victories over the Boston Celtics.
    1985 for sure because it was the very first time the Lakers beat the Celtics for the Championship. And after the Lakers beat the Celtics again in 1987, in a Championship Rally at The Forum, Coach Pat Riley guaranteed that the Lakers were going to repeat as Champions.
    Those moments definitely should have shown on Winning Time!

    Speaking of Kurt Rambis, too bad we don't get to see how Kevin McHale's clothesline of him in Game 4 affected Pat Riley, who from that point vowed that no team of his would ever be out-physicaled again, leading not only to the Lakers taking it physically to the Celtics in 1985, but would affect the rosters Riley would later build in New York and Miami.

    They also took some liberties with how the final stretch of Game 7 played out:
    The Lakers made a run. Magic had the ball with a chance to cut the lead to one. DJ stripped him and went in for a layup that Cooper blocked. Magic got the ball again with a chance to cut it to one and McHale knocked it away. DJ went in for another layups and Cooper fouled him (also Bird had the ball for a dunk if they hadn't called the foul).
    The Lakers had a chance to steal it and coughed it up. It wasn't the refs.
