- From my VHS recordings: Here is an episode of "Iron Chef" (the original Japanese version, not the American version), from a broadcast on Food Network in May, 2003 (unsure of the exact date, but it's supposedly during the "Memorial Day" weekend of 2003). This is the "Tofu Battle" episode, featuring Iron Chef Chen Kenichi, which originally aired in Japan on April 7th, 1995 (I am unsure when it first aired in the U.S....Food Network first started airing the show in 1998).
Commentary: This show become somewhat of a cult hit in the States (it inspired the American "Iron Chef", which is still on the air today). I consider it similar to how the Japanese "Ninja Warrior" inspired the "American Ninja Warrior" show. I personally disovered this show in late 2000 (just in time for the infamous "Bobby Flay vs. Masaharu Morimoto" rematch in early 2001). Yes, most of my recordings from this time period revolve around Cartoon Network, Kids WB, Fox Kids, or the Sci-Fi Channel, but this show was also a love of mine from this era in television.
NOTE: CZcams eliminated the theme song at certain points (due to copyright issues), cutting the volume out at around the 5 minute mark (it lasts for a little over a minute), and likewise cutting the volume out during Chairman Kaga's description of Tofu (for about 45 seconds), and also for the 30 second end theme as well. This is otherwise an intact recording of what Food Network was like in May, 2003 (with commercials included).
There's no words said during the opening theme song or the end song. If you want to know what Chairman Kaga says about Tofu, here's a transcript: "Tofu. If memory serves me right, chefs in China always advise me to cook tofu like this: 'never lukewarm'. This means tofu has to be served either chilled or steaming hot. Either way, no inbetween. 'Why?' you ask? Well, because 90% of tofu consists of water, and at lukewarm temperatures, the flavor will be lost. So praise the wisdom of the Chinese when they say: 'never lukewarm'."
If memory serves me right, this show is still lit 20 years later.
hahaha
LMBO

Today's theme is....... NOSTALGIA!!
It was but now it not used anymore
Rewatching this today because Chen Kenichi is no longer among us here on Earth. RIP Iron Chef.
Chen-san was the GOAT.
I still can’t believe that Kobe died. He’ll forever be the youngest Iron Chef.
when commercials actually add to the experience rather than detract, lol. What a nostalgia trip
You can't help but love how the Chairman summons the Iron Chefs, introduces the theme ingredient and screams Allez Couzin..
When the chairman begins to babble, i love Chen's reaction! 😂
This is SUCH a blast from the past - not just the episode itself, but the commercials and old Food Network promos. Reminds me of when I used to have this show on in the background while typing away on my huge box of a desktop computer. Great stuff!
This right here was peak food network
The show is the beginning of the competition of Food Network
I remember as a kid staying up late to watch this like at 1am-2am haha.
The existence of this video exudes comfort, brings me back to when my parents would religiously watch this throughout my childhood. It’s like one of my earliest tv memories and it seemed like a fever dream, rewatching it’s again it still is a fever dream lol
The early 2000s commercials are so nostalgic to me! And I'm not even American but still they feel pretty much the same as those in Europe at that time 🤣
Love the retro commercials. Reminds me of the night i stayed up all night watching food network and cartoon network Midnight Run
These old commercials and food network promos are pretty lit too nice throwbacks
This episode aired in Japan April 7, 1995, less than 3 months after the Great Hanshin earthquake.
That makes opening with "if memory serves me right" when talking about it really funny then. Yes, yes I think most people in their audience would still remember the city destroying earthquake three months later...
The Chairman's suit is more dramatic and colourful than New Year's fireworks.. watching this @ 2020
Always my dude!
After this is switch over to late night with Conan O'Brien and steal a beer from my parents......
The damn commercials made me cry.....life was Soo simple back then....I haven't been able to relax in years
I first watched this show in I *think* 98 or something, but I never thought much of it first since I was a kid and my sense of humor wasn't fully developed (Though I did think it was cool still). I watched it again around 2002 or 2003 late at night in Food Network and the next day I was like "Mom you got to check out this show! It's hilarious!" and we loved it so we always watched it together in the evening. Life was pretty rough for us at the time, so this was kind of the highlight of the day, so I have pretty good memories of Iron Chef.
You can watch it today on a smart TV in HD, on the iron chef channel on Pluto TV.
My family would gather in the living room and watch together every Saturday night when it first aired, such great memories.
THANK you for also uploading the commercials here!! So cozy ♡♡♡
Thank you for editing out the commercials.
These shows were and are still awesome….the Chairman rocks and the translators are hilarious, particularly when they don’t like a dish.
Chan’s father invented mapo tofu?? What a legend to have in the family
Boiled medicinal gyoza with shark fin. What a name.
This vintage nissan camercials narrator foreshadowing the way current Altima owners driver their cars.
I also have hundreds of VHS tapes in my storage unit of
Iron Chef that i taped right off of The Food Network LOL
.
I miss this show. I was totally in love with the Chairman
I love Chairman Kaga too
Chen! Chen! He's our man! If he can't do it, Sakai can!
There so many iron chef remake but no one can beat original
They were ahead of their time. Already maintaining 6 foot apart. 😆
I remember this Japanese cooking show.
love these guys
very good, indeed
I miss this show
Fucking love this show RIP Chef Chen
BRING IT BACK !!!
I know tell me about it
I saw Carla Hall in that commercial for Food Fight, right??
RIP Chen-san
11:51 He couldnt keep it in XD
Yomigarukarik IRON CHEF
Why is pretty much all of the music in this episode the entire soundtrack from the movie Backdraft? Lol
That was the soundtrack for pretty much every episode as aired on Food Network (and I presume on the original Fuji TV airings too?), for the DVDs and streaming they put in soundalike tracks instead, so it's a trip hearing the original soundtrack in there again at this point
@@evenmorebetter I didn't know that
By the time _Iron Chef_ reruns aired on Fine Living, the rights to use Hans Zimmer's _Backdraft_ score lapsed, thus explaining the substitute soundtrack for later repeats.
oh man we got this dub in australia too, I always found it weird how they dub everyone except the chairman, I guess it gives him more mystique?
How was it not kobe beef!?
I know kishi always gets a lot of hate from fans but this is the most I have ever seen it from other people on the show. They clearly all hate her. Look at the facial expressions on Chen, the challenger and the lower house member when she talks. Look how after she criticizes one of the dishes the lower house member steps in to correct her. It is always a mystery why she is here, she is so rude and unpleasant. Even in this episode she insults Chen saying he made an "elevated" version of a simple ie mediocre dish and then starts talking about his dead father in heaven. Chen's dismissive reaction to her talking about his father makes his feelings about her clear.
the chairman sure is a beast
Didn’t the challenger and Iron Chef Chen have a rematch after this battle?
Does the audio cut in and out for anyone else?
The commercials get me
The heck with the copyrights come on!
I’m so glad the program pick tofu as a theme ingredient being sensitive and concern about the situation in Kobe. 👍🏻
oh man he totally got scholled
We all know why the challenger picked Chen. The ooor guy has the worse record when it comes to female challengers.
0:25 I still want that music that summons the iron chefs!
Mapo tofu is my favorite Chinese food
this is the second korean woman kenichi defeated
What's with the commercials and the period of time with no sound?
Read the description.
Finally Mapo-Tofu
My mom made mapo-tofu for dinner and boy it was so tasty. We eat like a king. Mmm, Mmm, Mmm.
@@raymondkim8887 you learn cooking for yourself, you're not king.
Does anyone know the name of the ending song?
I think i heard that its from the movie "Backdraft" but I could be wrong. Hanz Zimmer composed it I believe.
I wonder why the Italian Iron Chef wasn't ever chosen.
Story line was he was too much of a showboat and Kara shipped him out to Italy until he got himself under control which wouldn’t be until 97
I know this is 2003, but the commercials look like 1996.
Because this is not 2003 lmao.
@@firerocket7343 the episode was made in the 90s but the uploader got it from a 2003 broadcast, that's what it says in the description
There's one channel on youtube called filmrise tv or something that has all of the iron chef series BUT THEY CHANGED ALL THE MUSIC WHY??? Why does everything have to suck nowadays? Just to make it clear: I HATE how Iron Chef is being presented on CZcams!
Great Hanshin earthquake January 17, 1995 or (The Kobe earthquake)
aye, do you happen to have discord or something of the like? I have an episode of the original Iron Chef from 2005 (the Valentine's Day/Chocolate one), I just haven't uploaded it anywhere due to copyright concerns. I'd love to share it with ya, heheh
sorry random person here, could you share it with me as well? i can give you my discord i love these episodes
yuh, of course! i have my discord listed in my channels about page, if that makes things easier
28:28 nuts and WHAT?!
This show is fixed for only the iron chef to win lol!
Mmm. Mapo tofu sure is tasty. My mom sometimes make it at home for dinner.
Then you learn to cook mapo tofu to her and yourself.
Booby flay and his stupid skillets, it was rigged
I miss non-woke commercials.
Well, will you look at THAT!
A time before WOKE tv ads!
